Keymer seals title in Chennai with a round to spare
Chennai, Aug 14 (PTI) Vincent Keymer completed a landmark triumph, becoming the first sole champion at the Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters 2025 meet with a round to spare.
The 20-year-old German, playing white, drew his match against Dutchman Jordan van Foreest, while results elsewhere confirmed his tournament victory. Keymer's dominance over a star-studded field also catapulted him into the world's top 10 on the live rating list, underlining his arrival among the game's elite.
'Entering the top 10 in live rating is a milestone I have wanted to reach for a long time, and I am very glad that the hard work finally paid off," Keymer said.
'Winning the tournament and breaking into the Top 10 at the same time is fantastic for me and truly special. However, the tournament will continue tomorrow. That is why I prefer to remain focused and keep the tension for the last round." Elsewhere in the Masters, all five games ended in draws, a rare full split that keeps the race for second and third wide open heading into the final round.
Arjun Erigaisi and Karthikeyan Murali–playing each other on day 9–remain in contention alongside several close pursuers, with every half-point on the final day set to carry weighty implications for both the standings and crucial FIDE rating gains.
In the Challengers, GM Pranesh M tightened his grip on the leaderboard with a crucial win over GM Harika Dronavalli, taking a half-point lead (6.5) into the final day.
Right behind him, GM Abhimanyu Puranik stayed in contention by defeating GM Diptayan Ghosh, while GM Leon Luke Mendonca's draw with GM Pa Iniyan kept him level with Abhimanyu and just half a point adrift of the top.
GM Adhiban Baskaran's victory over IM Harshavardhan GB and GM Aryan Chopra's win against GM Vaishali Rameshbabu rounded off the day's results. PTI KHS KHS AT AT

La Liga: Hansi Flick stays confident as Barcelona scramble to register new recruits
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick remains optimistic the club will register key players, including new signings Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford, in time for Saturday's LaLiga opener at Mallorca, despite ongoing financial fair play (FFP) Spanish champions are once again battling LaLiga's strict financial rules after several seasons of spending more on signings and wages than they have generated in revenue. Flick admitted the situation was far from ideal but expressed trust in the club's me, you can imagine I'm not happy about that. But I know the situation and I believe in the club,' Flick told reporters on Friday. 'We have to wait till tomorrow. It was the same situation last season. We will focus on what we can change and what is in our hands.' Barcelona's registration woes have been partially eased by a surprising twist involving captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Initially unwilling to sign a long-term medical leave agreement that would reduce his wages by 80% while he recovers from surgery, the German goalkeeper was stripped of his captaincy before agreeing to the deal — after which the armband was returned.'The most important thing is that everyone speaks together,' Flick said. 'Marc has shown for many years he's a fantastic goalkeeper. The important thing is he comes back fit. We're all on his side.'The sale of veteran defender Inigo Martinez to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia has also freed up valuable salary space. Flick admitted he was 'a little bit surprised' by Martinez's departure but understood the decision.'I'm not happy he left, but he's a fantastic player and person. He was one of our leaders and deserves the best,' Flick losing a key defender, Flick is not rushing into the transfer market, instead backing 23-year-old Gerard Martin to step up.'Gerard can also play centre back. Last season, as a left back, he improved a lot. When he played as centre back, he did well. I like players who can play in different positions,' Flick the squad's registration still unresolved, all eyes will be on whether Barcelona can navigate their FFP constraints in time for kick-off at Son Moix.- Ends

Markram Explains Rationale Behind Opening: 'Got Some Guys In The Middle...'
Last Updated: South Africa captain Aiden Markram will keep opening in T20Is to fit middle-order batsmen. The series against Australia is tied 1-1, with the decider. South Africa captain Aiden Markram stated that he will continue his new role as the opener in the T20I team to accommodate more middle-order batsmen. The three-match T20I series between South Africa and Australia is currently tied at 1-1, with the decider scheduled to be played in Cairns on Saturday. Markram had a successful IPL 2025 as an opener for Lucknow Super Giants, scoring five fifties in 13 innings at a strike rate of 148.82. However, he has not scored beyond fifty in T20Is since October 2022. 'Going through our squads and the players that we've got around, we think probably that (opening) is the best fit. We've got some guys in the middle order that are a lot more destructive than I am, and we feel probably it's better off for me and Ricks (Ryan Rickelton) to be up top." 'I did it a bit at the IPL and am starting to do it now again at international cricket. It's an exciting role. It's always nice to bat in the powerplay, and the focus is to get the team off to good starts," said Markram to reporters on Friday. Markram's opening partnerships with Rickelton have resulted in scores of 12 and 34. Although number three batsman Lhuan-dre Pretorius is yet to perform, Dewald Brevis brought cheer by scoring an unbeaten 125 in the second T20I. 'But there'll be occasions where you feel like the wicket might be on the slower side or might offer something, and you sort of take that punt. The way I try to operate is just go on my gut feel, whatever my gut's telling me in the moment, run with that and back that and reflect on what could have been and what should have been possibly after the game," he added. With South Africa having won only one of their last nine bilateral T20I series, including losing the tri-series final to New Zealand, Markram's focus is on reversing that record on Saturday. 'It feels like we are moving in the right direction. The series has been good so far. Our bowlers have performed well." 'The previous game made our batters look good, but it was very much an individual performance (Brevis hit an unbeaten 125). So a nice challenge for our batters tomorrow to hopefully click and for them to put on a good score."
