Mansfield Town footballer Lucas Akins jailed for causing death of cyclist in car crash
Mansfield Town forward Lucas Akins crashed into Adrian Daniel in his Mercedes G350 in Huddersfield on 17 March 2022, while taking his daughter to a piano lesson.
Leeds Crown Court heard that Mr Daniel, 33, suffered catastrophic head injuries and died 10 days later.
Akins, 36, played in Mansfield's 0-0 draw with Wigan on 4 March, hours after pleading guilty at Leeds Crown Court to death by careless or inconsiderate driving.
The footballer has continued to play for Mansfield since the incident.
Judge Alex Menary said on Thursday that he had considered imposing a suspended sentence, but had concluded that only an immediate sentence of 14 months' imprisonment was appropriate.
A spokesperson for Mansfield Town FC said it "acknowledges" the court's decision and offered the club's "sincere and deepest condolences to the family of Adrian Daniel at this difficult time".
"The club is considering its position with regards to Lucas and will be making no further comment at this stage," the spokesperson added.
'Like hell'
Prosecuting, Carmel Pearson said it was a "difficult junction to emerge from" but that the defendant "did not stop at the give-way sign".
Savanna Daniel, Mr Daniel's wife, told the court it had been "like hell and a nightmare [she is] not waking up from".
"There was no reason for Adrian to be killed that way," she said, adding it was "too simple a collision to have taken a life".
Mrs Daniel said she did not want Akins's children growing up without their father as she did not want "any more lives to be destroyed from this", but she criticised the defendant for failing to plead guilty at an earlier stage.
Tim Pole, representing Akins, said he was "fundamentally a decent, honest and hard-working individual".
"I want to publicly apologise on his behalf," he said.
Mr Pole added that Akins understood Mrs Daniel's "frustration and anger" over the time it took him to plead guilty.
Handing down his sentence, the judge accepted that Akins's remorse was genuine but by not admitting to the offence at an earlier stage, he had prolonged Mrs Daniel's "heartache and grief".
After the sentencing, Mrs Daniel said "three years of hell" had come to a close, in a statement via West Yorkshire Police.
She said Akins had made a "farce" of the justice system and that his failure to plead guilty sooner "makes a mockery of any remorse that Akins offers for his actions".
Akins, who has played for Mansfield Town since 2022 and was previously with clubs including Huddersfield Town, Tranmere Rovers and Burton Albion, was also suspended from driving for 12 months.

Cops fighting feuding Scots crime gangs call for more resources
The head of Scotland's police inspectorate has called for more cash and resources to help detectives tackle the current violence between Scotland's crime gangs. More resources are needed to help detectives tackle the current violence between Scotland's organised crime groups according to the country's police inspectorate chief. In his annual report out yesterday Craig Naylor refers to the mayhem that has swept Scotland since March as part of the long running feud between members of the Lyons and Daniel crime clans The head of HM Inspectorate of Constabulary in Scotland (HMICS) says he would also like to see the millions raised from the seized assets of crooks diverted back to the police in their fight against organised crime. and the two feuding gangs. To date more than 55 people have been arrested by officers - as part of Operation Portaledge - for a series of firebombings and other attacks in Glasgow and Edinburgh, aimed mainly at Daniel family members and associates. The most recent outbreak was earlier this week when a cab firm in Gorgie Road, Edinburgh - Capital Cars - was torched for a second time since May. Mr Naylor said;"The early months of 2025 have seen a return of significant violence and disorder associated with serious organised crime groups. "These events are often contained within a limited geographical area but on this occasion have stretched across the east and west regions of the country. "Whilst Police Scotland 's operational activity has resulted in a significant number of arrests; these attacks remind us of the transnational nature and risk posed by organised crime groups and the need for police and law enforcement agencies to work globally to target those involved in directing such activities. "The reform of policing in Scotland has undoubtedly strengthened its ability to effectively tackle the threat from organised crime groups compared with legacy arrangements. However, the increasingly complex nature of such criminality also reinforces the need to ensure policing continues to have the resources required to protect communities across Scotland from those who seek to cause harm over others." Tamo Junto - the gangland enforcers for Dubai-based crime boss Ross McGill - have claimed responsibility for the latest blaze at Capital Cars owned by businessman Stephen Rose. Rose's home in the city's Barnton was also targeted a few hours earlier. Former Rangers Union Bears leader McGill, who is from East Kilbride, near Glasgow, is said to be behind most of the recent violence after he was paid for a £500,000 cocaine deal with fake money. McGill who is linked to the Lyons family blames Edinburgh cocaine baron Mark Richardson who is a close associate of the Daniel family. His gang torched a series of properties and businesses throughout Edinburgh, before the war spread to Glasgow in April when they went after the Daniel's due to their links to Richardson. Stephen Rose has denied any links to gangland activity or Mark Richardson and says he has no idea why he or his taxi firm has been targeted. Mr Naylor wants to see the introduction of an Asset Recovery Incentivisation Scheme in Scotland, where Police Scotland could receive additional resources from criminals' seized assets to spend directly on fighting crime. A similar scheme is already in operation across the rest of the UK. Mr Naylor's annual report also reveals that in the 2023-24 financial year more than £10 million of dirty money was recovered in Scotland using Proceeds of Crime legislation. He says that should go straight to the police to continue the fight against crime gangs. Mr Naylor added:" At a time of increasing demand, I would be encouraged to see conversations to consider if some funding could be released from seized assets to bolster the fight against organised crime and maintain Scotland's position as a top performer in this area." In his annual report Mr Naylor also welcomed the recent passing of the Police (Ethics, Conduct and Scrutiny) Act by the Scottish Parliament which will giver Police Scotland more powers to root out rogue cops. He said the bill addressed recommendations made by HMICS relating to the vetting of police officers, and gave the Chief Constable power to dismiss any officer who doesn't meet basic vetting standards.

Off-duty Nottinghamshire Police officer assaulted man on night out
An off-duty police officer who assaulted a man while he was drunk and on a night out would have been dismissed from the force had he not already resigned, a misconduct panel has former Nottinghamshire Police constable - who has not been named - threw punches and assaulted his victim in the early hours of 22 October 2023, outside a bar in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He received a criminal caution for common assault and later a misconduct hearing at the force's headquarters on Monday, it was concluded that if he was still serving, he would have been "immediately dismissed". The hearing was chaired by Leicestershire Police Temporary Chief Constable David Sandall, who ruled the ex-officer should be granted anonymity due to "significant mental health issues relating to his previous military background and service".However, it was found the former officer's drunken state was the "primary factor" for his conduct and was "not linked to his medical conditions". 'Appalling conduct' The misconduct panel heard when the off-duty officer was arrested, he was "abusive and disrespectful" to his colleagues. It was concluded that the former officer's conduct fell below the standards of professional behaviour and amounted to gross Police's deputy chief constable Rob Griffin apologised for the "trauma" caused to the victim. He added: "The actions of this one individual has the potential to dent public trust and confidence in policing. "I am therefore pleased he no longer works in our organisation and would also like to thank the officers who came forward and called out his appalling conduct."
