Richard Dunne: Why Ireland have 'genuine chance' of going to World Cup
Ireland will get their qualification campaign underway on September 6 when they host Hungary at the Aviva Stadium.

The journey to the 2026 World Cup will be tough for the Boys in Green but Dunne believes that this is Ireland's best chance at making it to football's biggest tournament in a number of years.
While speaking with Irish online casino affiliate Casino.org, Dunne said: 'I was chatting to some friends yesterday and I was saying that I feel like this is the first tournament we're going into in a long time where we have a genuine chance of qualifying.
'I think we've got a big pool of players with a lot of strength and depth. We've got a system at the moment that works for us, where we're not going to be that exciting, we're not going to be playing free flowing football but we're going to be difficult to beat.
'This is something that we've lacked over previous campaigns and I'm hopeful that we're going to be in with a chance of getting a play-off place.'
The former Manchester City defender added that the current outlook of the Irish side is a 'huge improvement' of what the side looked like over the past few years.
Ireland have not qualified for a major tournament since the European Championships in 2016 and haven't made it to a World Cup since 2002.
One of the gems of the current Irish squad is, of course, Evan Ferguson.

A couple of injuries combined with getting stuck behind the likes of Joao Pedro and Danny Welbeck in the pecking order meant Ferguson was out of favour and didn't have the chance to regain his previous form.
However, after completing a loan move to Roma this summer, the Meath native already looks like a sharper version of himself and has already bagged a few pre-season goals for the Italian side.
Dunne believes that the best is yet to come for Ferguson and he will ultimately be Ireland's shining star for the upcoming campaign.
He continued: 'I think you just have to look at what he did in the first couple of seasons of his career.
'He was doing really well in the Premier League and he looked the main man. People were talking about him being a 60, 70, 80 million pound player going to real big clubs.
'It's difficult when you're a young player and you break through and to get those opportunities, certainly as a centre-forward, so I think the last 18 months of his Premier League career probably isn't what you judge him on.
'You judge him on what he was before and that potential, so I think there's a real benefit in him stepping out of that Premier League spotlight and going forward and playing for another huge club.
'I think he'll start to find his feet and start to find out what type of player he is as well and we'll see the best of him over the next couple of seasons and beyond.

Ireland captain Séamus Coleman is nearing his 37th birthday and only he really knows how much longer he will be on the pitch leading the side.
When his retirement comes, he will be passing the international armband down to a younger member of the squad and Dunne believes it's the new Brentford captain who is the right fit to take on the leadership role.
He said: 'It's difficult looking in from the outside but you'd normally go for one of the centre-backs or centre-midfielders and I think the fact that Nathan Collins has been given the permanent captaincy at Brentford means he fits the leading role to do it.
'He's been a standout player at times for Ireland and it's difficult because he's still a young centre-back, he's probably now coming into the prime of his career so it's probably the ideal time for him to become a captain, to become that leader and take on the extra responsibilities, because I can only see him over the next five years improving and becoming a better player.
'Hopefully, he's the one that could be the leader and step up for the next tournament.'

Footballers killed in horror crash as teammate rushed to hospital
Two footballers have died in a horrific crash in a road tunnel that has left a third teammate fighting for his life. Danilo Boz and Fabio Rosa, both 19-year-old players for ASD Calcio Maniago Vajont in the Promozione league - the sixth tier of the Italian football pyramid - succumbed to their injuries at the scene. They were passengers in a vehicle driven by teammate Andrea Zoccoletto, who was rushed to hospital in a critical condition. The players were travelling to their home town of Maniago in northern Italy, after completing a training session in nearby Poffabro. According to initial reports, Zoccoletto lost control of the Renault Twingo whilst entering the tunnel and swerved onto the opposite side of the road. The car then smashed head-on into a Volkswagen Tiguan driven by a 72-year-old woman, who was also transported to hospital. Her condition remains unknown at this time. Following the collision, the passenger side of the Twingo struck the tunnel wall, causing it to partially cave in. The Bus del Colvera tunnel, which connects Frisanco to Maniago, spans approximately one kilometre, as reported by NeedToKnow, reports the Daily Star. The three players were described as close mates who had recently reunited for training following the summer holidays. A club representative confirmed that all sporting activities had been suspended indefinitely as a consequence of the tragedy. The club said: "We are shocked by the tragic passing of Danilo and Fabio. "We are close to their families and loved ones at this time for this unimaginable loss, and we will continue to provide them with our full support. "All Calcio Maniago Vajont activities are currently suspended until further notice." The incident remains under investigation.

Manchester United bolster striking options after agreeing £74m deal for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko
The talented 22-year-old striker has been the subject of a tug of a war as the Red Devils and Newcastle both attempted to bolster their attacks ahead of the new season. Sesko indicated to United that he favoured a move to them over the Magpies and PA understands they have now agreed a deal with Leipzig worth 76.5m euros (£66.3m) plus a potential 8.5m euros (£7.4m) in add-ons. The Slovenia international has been granted permission to travel to Manchester to undergo a medical, believed to be taking place tonight, and complete the move. Sesko scored 21 goals in all competitions last term and has long been on the Red Devils' radar, stretching back to his move from Domzale to RB Salzburg in 2019. Newcastle had made the first move this summer and reacted to seeing an initial bid rebuffed by making an improved approach worth a reported 82.5m euros (£71.9m) plus 2.5m euros (£2.2m) in add-ons. Ruben Amorim's Red Devils were waiting in the wings and followed with a rival proposal of 75m euros (£65.4m), plus a potential 10m (£8.7m) in add-ons. The terms were subsequently tweaked, with United paying slightly more as an initial fee as part of the deal in principle agreed with Leipzig. The PA news agency understands United have agreed to a future friendly match as part of a deal that is also said to include a sell-on clause. Sesko is set to become the fourth signing of the summer as United look to hit back from finishing 15th last season – their worst top-flight campaign in 51 years – and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham. Matheus Cunha joined from Wolves for £62.5m, while Bryan Mbeumo left Brentford for an initial £65m fee that could rise by a further £6m should certain add-on clauses related to team and player be achieved. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more Teenage wing-back Diego Leon has also linked up with United after a deal was struck with Cerro Porteno in January. Sesko's impending arrival raises fresh questions over the future of fellow frontman Rasmus Hojlund, who has scored just 14 goals in 62 Premier League appearances since joining from Atalanta in 2023. The striker, who like the Slovenian is 22, has rarely justified his lofty fee and has been linked with an exit, but the Denmark international recently stressed that he wants to stay at Old Trafford. United have been trying to sign a striker throughout this window and made Sesko their priority over Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins, having been interested in Liam Delap and Hugo Ekitike before their summer moves. Newcastle also held an interest in the pair and missing out on Sesko is another blow in a frustrating summer window that has been compounded by the situation surrounding Liverpool's pursuit of Alexander Isak. The 25-year-old missed Newcastle's Asian tour with what the club called a 'minor thigh injury' but it soon emerged he was unsettled and trained at former club Real Sociedad. Boss Eddie Howe claimed he only found about Isak's whereabouts through the media, with the Sweden international made to train by himself in Tyneside on Wednesday. Liverpool have seen a £110m bid rejected and, while the Premier League champions remain keen on the 25-year-old, sources on Merseyside have indicated they would not enter a bidding war.
