Who is Chris Gotterup? World no. 158 who won the Scottish Open over Rory, then finished third at The Open in his major debut

Economic Times20-07-2025
Chris Gotterup has gone from relative unknown to one of the most exciting breakout stars on the PGA Tour in 2025 in a matter of days. Ranked World No. 158, the 26-year-old stunned the golf world by outdueling Rory McIlroy to win the Genesis Scottish Open, and then followed it up with a sensational third-place finish at The Open in his major championship debut. With his fearless playing style and recent big-stage victories, the 26-year-old is turning heads across the golfing world. Here's what you should know about him:
Chris Gotterup was born on July 20, 1999, in Easton, Maryland, but spent most of his formative years in Little Silver, New Jersey. He attended Christian Brothers Academy, where he starred on the varsity golf team and laid the groundwork for a promising golf career.
Though Rutgers isn't known as a golf powerhouse, Gotterup made his mark in a big way. He was named Big Ten Player of the Year in the 2019–20 season and posted seven top-five finishes in 29 tournaments.
He finished fourth at the 2019 Big Ten Championship, which remains one of the best in program history. He also dominated New Jersey's amateur circuit, winning both the 2019 NJSGA Open and Met Amateur. After transferring to the University of Oklahoma for his final year, Gotterup elevated his game to a new level. He finished runner-up in the Big 12 Championship and just missed a playoff at the NCAA Championship. He ended the 2022 season ranked No. 1 in the country and was awarded both the Haskins Award and the Jack Nicklaus Award, honors reserved for the nation's best collegiate golfer. After turning pro in 2022, Gotterup found his groove in 2024, notching his first win at the Myrtle Beach Classic. But it was in 2025 that he truly announced himself with a signature victory at the Genesis Scottish Open, where he tied the course record (61) and held off Rory McIlroy in the final round. He followed that up with a strong showing at the British Open at Royal Portrush, proving his success wasn't a one-off.
Gotterup is in a relationship with Samantha Rae Monte, who is based in New York City. The couple has been together since at least 2023 and often travels together on tour. However, Monte didn't make the trip to Royal Portrush, where Gotterup nearly pulled off another top-tier win following his Scottish Open triumph.

Atwal finishes T24 at Senior Open

Agency: PTI London, Jul 28 (PTI) Arjun Atwal sunk in six birdies but also gave away five bogeys, two of them in the last five holes, for a final round of 1-under 69 to finish tied-24th alongside defending champion KJ Choi at the ISPS HANDA Senior Open at Sunningdale. Atwal with cards 67-72-69-71 totalled 3-under for the week and was the top Indian, as Jeev Milkha Singh (69) was T-56 and Jyoti Randhawa (73) T-61. It is the first time three Indians made the cut a Major, men or women or Seniors. Atwal, playing only his second event of the year, said, 'I have not been able to get many starts but played well this week. Hopefully more starts will make things better." Pádraig Harrington wrote his name into history as he became the fifth player to win both The Open and Senior Open. The Irishman, who secured his second U.S. Senior Open title last month, finished three strokes ahead of fellow former Ryder Cup Captain Thomas Bjørn and 1997 Open winner Justin Leonard to claim his third Senior Major victory. Harrington, who won The Open in 2007 and defended the Championship in 2008, joins Bob Charles, Darren Clarke, Gary Player and Tom Watson as the only men in history to have won both the Claret Jug and Senior Open Trophy. The 53-year-old started the day with a two-stroke lead over Leonard, which he immediately increased to three after an eagle at the first on the Old Course at Sunningdale. Further gains at the sixth and ninth holes saw his lead extend to four strokes after the turn, but Bjørn moved to within two after a run of four birdies in six holes from the ninth. The Dane's momentum was halted by a bogey at the 16th and, despite dropping a shot of his own on the 17th, Harrington held a three-stroke lead on the 18th tee. Harrington hit his approach safely on the 18th green and had two putts for par for a three under par 67, a 16 under par total and his 11th victory since joining the over-50s ranks. Playing partner Leonard signed for a two under par round of 68 and a 13 under par total. Australian Scott Hend finished the week in fourth place on 12 under par, while Ernie Els and Cameron Percy shared fifth on 11 under. Padraig Harrington claims Senior Open for third major title

Ireland's Padraig Harrington carded a 3-under 67 to finish at 16-under 264 and claim the ISPS Handa Senior Open at Berkshire, England on Sunday. HT Image The victory marks Harrington's second major win in four weeks and makes him only the fifth player to win The Open and the Senior Open. "You want to do things that stand out, and having won a real Open, coming out, winning the Senior Open ... it adds a validation," Harrington said. "... I'm kind of on a high of winning, but then there will be that deep sense of satisfaction knowing that you've done both." Harrington won The Open in 2007 and 2008, and was on the cusp of winning the Senior Open in consecutive years. He finished second in 2022 and 2023, losing the latter in a playoff, before breaking through this year. The Dublin native entered the day with a two-shot lead, but never got complacent. "I don't want to relax, that has cost me in the past," Harrington said. "... I get ahead of myself, and you know, sometimes when it's an easy shot, easy tee shot, I can lose focus. "So I want to stay hyped up. And to be honest, I think today, because I wasn't comfortable with my swing, I never let my guard down. I was always into it and focused all day." Harrington, 53, started Sunday with an eagle on No. 1. He also tallied three birdies and two bogeys on the day, beating out Denmark's Thomas Bjorn and Justin Leonard, who finished at 13 under. Bjorn rolled in four birdies from No. 9 to No. 14, threatening Harrington's lead. He then bogeyed on 16, putting Harrington out of reach and finishing at 3-under 67. Leonard notched four birdies and two bogeys on the day for a 2-under 68. He carded 5-under 65 on Friday and Saturday. "It wasn't quite as sharp as I was the last couple days. You know, just not able to really hit it close enough to putt pressure," Leonard said. "I felt like if I could have been 3- or 4-under on the front nine, then, you know, we're kind of neck and neck." Scott Hend (65) finished fourth at 12 under, while fellow Australian Cameron Percy (65) and South Africa's Ernie Els (66) tied for fifth at 11 under. --Field Level Media

Agency: Sunningdale (UK), Jul 27 (PTI) Arjun Atwal emerged as the top Indian after three rounds as he was 1-under 69 and was tied 29h in the ISPS HANDA Senior Open here. Atwal, playing only his second event on the Seniors Tour – both Majors – followed up his first two rounds of 67-72 with 69 and was 2-under through 54 holes. Jyoti Randhawa (70-71-70) was 1-over and T-50th, while Jeev Milkha Singh (71-69-74) was 5-over and T-69. There is one more round left. Pádraig Harrington moved two strokes clear ahead of the final round at Sunningdale as he hopes to become the fifth player in history to win both The Open and ISPS HANDA Senior Open. The Irishman, who won the Claret Jug in 2007 at Carnoustie and defended it at Royal Birkdale in 2008, carded a second consecutive round of 65 to reach 13 under par after three rounds. Already a Senior Major Champion this season after winning his second US Senior Open title last month, Harrington made the turn at two under par after birdies on the fourth and ninth holes and then made his third gain of the day at the 11th. He recovered from a dropped shot on the 12th with back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes and then rolled in a short putt on the 18th hole after hitting his approach to three feet. Thomas Bjørn, Europe's victorious 2018 Ryder Cup captain and 15-time winner on the DP World Tour, carded a three under par 67 to sit in solo third on ten under. In a share of fourth on eight under par are 2022 KitchenAid Senior PGA Champion Steven Alker, former PGA Tour winner Greg Chalmers, 2017 Legends Tour Order of Merit winner Clark Dennis and 2002 WGC Match Play winner Kevin Sutherland.
