Amazon impacts Baton Rouge economy; pushes businesses to grow

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Amazon is fast-tracking its economic development with new jobs and training.
'Our starting wage in our facility in Baton Rouge ranges from $17.50 an hour to a little bit above that, especially for our team members who are coming on a night shift or weekend shift,' said Regional Leader and Senior Economic Development Manager at Amazon, Jessica Breaux. 'The really cool thing I think is they get benefits on their very first day in employment.'
It's one of the biggest names in global commerce, but in Baton Rouge, Amazon is building more than just distribution centers. President of the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge, Gregory Wood, said it's building a support system for businesses to grow.
'BTR1 was the location of the old Cortana Mall, and during that time, that particular area was seeing some decline in business licenses and other businesses supporting the surrounding area,' said Wood.
Although there are a lot of great businesses in the Baton Rouge area, Wood believes other businesses should take note of what Amazon is doing for their employees.
'I think what people need to understand, and look at, is what Amazon is offering their employees, and I think existing businesses need to take note of what Amazon is doing to lure employees into their workforce as well,' said Wood.

Gov. Shapiro delivers commencement address at West Scranton High School

Jun. 12—SCRANTON — Gov. Josh Shapiro on Wednesday told the West Scranton High School Class of 2025 graduating class that there are many different paths that their journey can take them down. "And hear me on this — there's no wrong path," Shapiro said. "There's only your path. There are many avenues to success. And we've got to respect — and support — all of them." Shapiro spoke directly to the 338 West Scranton High School graduates, their parents and teachers and staff, reminding the graduates that they represent the opportunity to chart their own course and succeed in Pennsylvania. The ceremony was held at the Lackawanna College Student Union building in Scranton. Since day one, Shapiro said he has worked to open doors of opportunity for all Pennsylvanians, no matter their path. On his first day in office, the governor said he signed an executive order announcing that 92% of state government jobs are open to Pennsylvanians without a college degree — and since then, nearly 60% of the Commonwealth's new hires do not have a four-year degree. Shapiro said he also made historic investments in public education — creating real opportunity for students, supporting teachers and school staff and delivering results across the Commonwealth. The governor said he has secured more than $2 billion in additional funding for K-12 public education — the largest investment in Pennsylvania history. And just two days earlier, the governor was in Berwick to announce that Amazon is planning to invest at least $20 billion to establish multiple high-tech cloud computing and artificial intelligence innovation campuses across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He said this initial investment from Amazon will create thousands of good-paying, stable jobs as Pennsylvania workers build, maintain, and operate the first two data center campuses — one in Luzerne County and another in Bucks County. Shapiro said this marks the largest private sector investment in the history of Pennsylvania. In his address, Shapiro said the students are key to Pennsylvania's future. "We have literally invested in your success," Shapiro said. "That is money very well spent. And you more than held up your end of the deal — you studied hard, tried new things, and accomplished a ton. And now, you're about to set out on your journey through life, stronger because of your West Scranton education." Shapiro said his administration has increased funding for vo-tech, career and technical education and apprenticeships, while investing in making college more affordable. "Consider this — right here at West, nearly 60 students from your graduating class completed classes at the Scranton-Lackawanna CTC," Shapiro said. "They studied everything from automotive and culinary arts to nursing and robotics. And 22% of your classmates here today — nearly 80 students — are going to take the skills they learned and go straight into the workforce. Another 10% are going to trade school; 8 of you are going into the military to serve our nation; and about half of you are going to college." Shapiro told the graduates that they are a great representation of the diversity of opportunities available here in Pennsylvania. "Each of you — no matter what path you choose — has the opportunity to be successful," he said. "And so if you remember only one thing from our time here today — remember that your governor showed up at your graduation because he gives a damn about you and asked you to blaze your own path. Chart your own course and follow your own gut. Live your own failures and find your own success." The Governor shares his story "When I graduated high school, my dream was to go to college, play on the basketball team, study pre-med, and then become a doctor — or maybe even be good enough to play professional basketball," Shapiro said. "You see how that turned out. I am none of those things. Instead, I flunked out of pre-med and got cut from the basketball team — on the very same day. "But I didn't give up. Instead, I found a passion for service that's guided my life's work ever since." Reach Bill O'Boyle at 570-991-6118 or on Twitter @TLBillOBoyle.

Prediction: Palantir Stock Will Plummet in the Second Half of 2025. The Reason Why Is Obvious.

Palantir is trading at a historically high valuation, and no other software stock comes even close right now. Notable institutional investors such as Cathie Wood and Stanley Druckenmiller have been selling Palantir stock as of late. While shares remain elevated, broader trends from institutional investors suggest there has been a significant slowdown in buying activity around Palantir stock. 10 stocks we like better than Palantir Technologies › Data mining specialist Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) picked up right where it left off in 2024. Last year, Palantir stock was the top performer in the S&P 500 index, as well as the third-best stock in the Nasdaq-100. So far in 2025, things haven't changed much for the artificial intelligence (AI) software player -- as shares have rocketed by an eye-popping 74% as of this writing (June 10). While the momentum doesn't appear to be slowing down at all for Palantir, my prediction is that the stock will plummet during the second half of the year. Let's explore some of the trends fueling Palantir stock right now, as well as some interesting breadcrumbs that could support my idea that shares are headed for a sell-off. Should you dump your Palantir position right now? Read on to find out. There is a lot that can be gathered from the chart below. The obvious takeaway is that Palantir's price-to-sales (P/S) multiple of 105 is significantly higher than any of the software growth stocks in this peer set. However, the bigger idea from the analysis below is that Palantir's valuation continues to expand. These dynamics imply that investors are buying Palantir stock in droves. The deeper question I've been asking is: Who are the investors that keep chasing Palantir's momentum? Based on some recent clues, I think I might have an answer. Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood is one of the original Palantir bulls on Wall Street. Shortly following the company's IPO in late 2020, Wood appeared on financial news programs on a regular basis -- constantly talking about her excitement around Palantir and the company's ability to disrupt legacy software providers. While this was a great source of indirect PR for Palantir, Wood shocked the investment world when she dumped her stake sometime in 2022. Following these moves, Wood started accumulating a position in Palantir stock once again in 2023. Per the graph in the prior section, Ark Invest's position in Palantir is sitting on a healthy profit considering shares now hover around all-time highs. Wood has taken note of these trends, and the famous tech investor is once again reducing her exposure to Palantir. Wood isn't the only notable personality on Wall Street that's choosing to take profits in Palantir, though. Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller of the Duquesne Family Office completely exited Palantir during the first quarter, per the fund's most recent 13F filing. Similar to Wood, Druckenmiller has also been in and out of Palantir stock in recent years. I view the decision to reduce exposure to Palantir stock right now as a prudent one. While the selling from Wood and Druckenmiller does not necessarily imply a bearish view of Palantir at all, I think trimming exposure and taking profits in a stock that seems overbought makes sense. Palantir's valuation is historically high, even compared to what investors witnessed during the peak bubble days of the dot-com boom. I think a rising number of institutions will come to the opinion that Palantir's current valuation trajectory is not sustainable given how far the stock has already run. The graph above illustrates the number of shares of Palantir stock that have increased and decreased by institutional investors over the last year. As the trends indicate, there was pronounced institutional buying of Palantir stock during the last few months of 2024. At the same time, the orange line -- which indicates institutional selling -- also steadily climbed during late 2024 and ultimately converged with the purple line (buyers) at the start of 2025. Right now, shares bought by institutions remains higher than shares sold, which implies large investors are net buyers of Palantir stock for the time being. Throughout this year, both buying and selling activity has decelerated -- as indicated by the relative flattening of both lines. These trends suggest that while institutions remain cautiously optimistic about Palantir, there could be further selling on the horizon as the narrowing gap between buyers and sellers becomes more obvious. As such, I think the current momentum fueling Palantir stock could tempt more institutions to dump their shares -- leading to a plummeting share price and much-needed valuation normalization. Ultimately, I don't think dumping your position in Palantir is entirely necessary. As a long-term investor, it's important to hold on to your highest-conviction winners. However, I do think taking some gains off the table could be a smart decision right now.
