Amazon impacts Baton Rouge economy; pushes businesses to grow

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Amazon is fast-tracking its economic development with new jobs and training. 'Our starting wage in our facility in Baton Rouge ranges from $17.50 an hour to a little bit above that, especially for our team members who are coming on a night shift or weekend shift,' said Regional Leader and Senior Economic Development Manager at Amazon, Jessica Breaux. 'The really cool thing I think is they get benefits on their very first day in employment.' It's one of the biggest names in global commerce, but in Baton Rouge, Amazon is building more than just distribution centers. President of the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge, Gregory Wood, said it's building a support system for businesses to grow. 'BTR1 was the location of the old Cortana Mall, and during that time, that particular area was seeing some decline in business licenses and other businesses supporting the surrounding area,' said Wood. Although there are a lot of great businesses in the Baton Rouge area, Wood believes other businesses should take note of what Amazon is doing for their employees. 'I think what people need to understand, and look at, is what Amazon is offering their employees, and I think existing businesses need to take note of what Amazon is doing to lure employees into their workforce as well,' said Wood. AI and AR integrated training modules introduced in government schools in Coimbatore through CSR initiative

Government school students of Classes XI and XII in Coimbatore district preparing for NEET, JEE, and other competitive exams are set to benefit from advanced digital learning tools, thanks to a new corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. On Saturday, District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar launched the programme, spearheaded by Soft Source Technologies in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Smart City. Under this initiative, 112 government schools across the district will receive tablets and preloaded SD cards. These devices contain educational content aligned with NCERT and State Board syllabi, as well as preparatory materials for NEET, JEE, and other competitive exams. Importantly, the content is accessible offline, eliminating the need for internet connectivity. The learning modules incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies to enhance student engagement and understanding. These modules break down the syllabus into key concepts for quicker learning and better retention, provide interactive AR models for subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, and offer personalised test feedback to help students identify areas for improvement. In the initial phase of the programme, tablets were distributed to students from 20 government schools. The Collector emphasised the significance of self-directed learning and the benefits of accessing educational resources without the need for internet connectivity. He further highlighted that the integration of AI-driven keyword-based learning and 3D conceptualisation would aid students in grasping complex subjects more effectively. He urged the School Education Department to monitor students' progress and collect feedback from students, parents, and teachers for future improvements to the initiative.

PM lauds NRIs for funding heart surgeries of Ethiopian kids; Saharanpur native leads effort

Dehradun: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 121st edition of Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, applauded the efforts of NRIs living in Ethiopia for providing free medical assistance to Ethiopian children suffering from congenital heart diseases. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Many such children are also receiving financial assistance from Indian families. Saharanpur native Rajeev Sharma, who leads this initiative, is part of the Indian diaspora in Ethiopia and currently serves as president of the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa. Sharma, who runs a business in Ethiopia, said they had earlier invited expert surgeons and doctors from India on medical missions to Ethiopia. This effort is an extension of that initiative, where Ethiopian children whose families cannot afford the expensive treatment are sent to India, with the Indian diaspora bearing all the expenses. Speaking to TOI from Ethiopia, Sharma said, "So far, as many as 20 Ethiopian children suffering from congenital heart diseases have successfully undergone surgery in India, and we aim to cover 100 such children under this initiative, which started in 2022." He added that the idea took shape when Rotary Club International president Shekhar Mehta visited Ethiopia in 2022, and the first batch of four children was sent to India for surgery that year. Explaining how the programme is managed, Sharma said, "The expenses are borne by the Indian diaspora, which works out to around Rs 4-5 lakh per patient, including the surgery and the stay of their attendants in India during treatment." In his radio address, Modi, while lauding the effort, said, "If a child's family is unable to afford the trip to India, Indian brothers and sisters are arranging for it." In Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi added, "The aim is to ensure that every child in Ethiopia battling a serious illness receives better treatment. This noble work by the Indian diaspora is receiving ample appreciation in Ethiopia. You know that medical facilities in India are continuously improving, benefiting citizens of other countries as well."

Vanderbijlpark Rotary hosts Egyptian counterparts

VANDERBIJLPARK – Following Vanderbijlpark Rotarians visiting Egypt two months ago during a friendship exchange, last week the Egyptian counterparts returned the favour and paid an 11-day visit to South Africa. On April 14, the Vanderbijlpark branch hosted eight members of the Rotary Club of Cairo Kings Valley at Emerald Resort & Casino during a dinner session. The visit to the Vaal formed part of other selected areas that the Egyptians planned to visit for experience, tour, and learning how South Africans live. Starting the night with their regular processions, and later into a dinner, the clubs exchanged sashes to officiate their visit. Speaking to Ster, Vanderbijlpark Rotary President Adri Roos told the paper why the visit was important to their branch. 'Two months ago, two members visited Egypt through our friendship exchange. This is after we hosted Canadians who toured our country.' Highlighting the importance of the visits, Roos added that they use the programme to learn from each other. 'These visits allow us to share information on the different projects in different countries. While we share the same vision, it is also important to learn certain things from other countries, such as sharing how they conduct certain projects, needs, and ideas in making sure we serve our communities.' Kings Valley President Ashraf El Manawy shared his reaction to their stay in South Africa. 'This is our second day in the country; however, I feel like I've been here for a while now. We already feel like family since our arrival at the airport and how we've been hosted,' he said. Touching base on some of the project highlights they recently did, El Manawy spoke of a renovation project close to his heart. 'Our big project thus far is the renovation of one of the most competitive schools in our country. We shared a presentation with our fellow counterparts, because we are proud of how big the project turned out, and hopefully they can magnify their projects in that regard,' he explained. 'This school was established in 1954 and has 238 talented students from all over the country. The facility is old, and the school is a government school, hence, we chose it. We spent 2m Egyptian Pounds,' El Manawy said proudly. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!

US Senate hopeful speaks to Rotary Club of Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A former political science professor and possible candidate for U.S. Senate in 2026 shared his political views at Monday's Rotary Club of Sioux City meeting. Thomas Laehn's presentation was based on his upcoming book about the U.S. Constitution titled 'The Rise of the Monarchical Presidency.' He says it's based off the idea that American presidents are increasingly using administrative devices such as executive orders and signing statements to avoid Congress and to make policy unilaterally. Diocese of Sioux City honors Pope Francis 'We've really departed from the intentions of our founding fathers that we were meant to be a republic in which power is fragmented, where there's checks and balances and we've lost it, that we are witnessing what I call the rise of the monarchical presidency,' Laehn said. Laehn was the first libertarian elected to partisan office in Iowa and currently serves as Greene County Attorney. His book was submitted to the publisher prior to President Trump's election.
