Charles Billmyer Sperow Jr.
Charles Billmyer Sperow Jr., 98, of Martinsburg, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2025, in Hospice of the May 5, 1927, in Martinsburg, he was a son of the late Charles B. Sperow, Sr. and Alice Maddex is survived by five children, David (Debbi), Mark (Rhonda Reymond), Kathy (Steve) Ritchie, Marty, and Jean (Paul) Hilgers; seven grandchildren; and 10 addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Sylvia, his wife of 72 years; sisters, Anne Sperow and Virginia Butler; son, Leslie; and grandson, Nathan up on a farm in Berkeley County, Charles ('Charlie') developed an interest in farming methods and crop production that would eventually lead to his career as an agronomist at West Virginia 21, Charlie's long and active participation in 4-H led to his being one of 31 young people selected from across the U.S. for the International Farm Youth Exchange (IFYE) program. Started after World War II, the program's goal was to foster 'peace through understanding.' While Charlie went to Sweden, others went to various countries, working and interacting with their communities. In exchange, young people from those countries came to the was professor of agronomy and soil science at West Virginia University for 39 years. During his career, he served as superintendent of WVU's Ohio Valley Experiment Station near Point Pleasant, and with his family, spent 4½ years in Uganda on a WVU-USAID contract, where Charlie was a lecturer at Bukalasa Agricultural his return to WVU's Morgantown campus, Charlie served as Extension Specialist — Agronomy. He was instrumental in developing and implementing technologies to improve crop production and management, and coordinated the West Virginia Conservation Farmer program for many years. Following the November, 1985 flood that devastated parts of West Virginia, he worked with local agencies to provide emergency winter feed supplies and restore cropland productivity. He was also active in the Northeast Agronomy Society and served a term as its retiring in Morgantown, Charlie continued to be involved with his church, St. Thomas a Becket Episcopal Church, Meals on Wheels, and Mended avid photographer, Charlie's camera accompanied him everywhere he went, and he maintained a substantial photo collection of family, farms, crops, flora, and memories from his overseas was known for his quick wit and sense of humor. He was well read and could converse insightfully on almost any subject. One granddaughter summed up Charlie's life, saying he loved well and was well will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, in St. Thomas a Becket Episcopal Church in Morgantown. Melvin Rexroad Jr.
Mr. Melvin Rexroad Jr., 101, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 3, 2025. He was born August 13, 1923, to the late Ruth Marie Brand and Melvin was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Helen Keffer up in Easton, Mel graduated from University High School in 1941 and began his studies at West Virginia University before being drafted in served with the 312th Bombardment Group of the United States Army Air Corps across the Southwestern Pacific. At the conclusion of World War II, Mel returned to WVU, met Helen, and graduated with a degree in engineering in 1949. While at school, he was a member of the golf team and Phi Kappa Alpha graduation, he joined the family business, Rexroad Heating and Cooling, presiding as president until his retirement in active citizen of Morgantown and an avid WVU sports fan, he loved being a member of the Morgantown community. He will be remembered for his love of his wife, Helen, and the rest of his family; his deep care for others; and his quick sense of is survived by his daughter, Paige Rexroad Canfield and husband William Bradford Canfield of McLean, Va.; granddaughter, Sumner Bradley Canfield of Nashville, Tenn.; sisters- in-law, Nancy Morrison of Atlanta, Ga., and Mary Lee Leiser (Bill) of Doylestown, Pa.; as well as numerous nieces and family wishes to thank Mel's caregivers for their generosity of spirit, and his hospice team from WV Caring for their loving lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in memory of Helen and Mel Rexroad, to Greater Love Family Outreach Ministries, P.O. Jennifer D. Volk
Jennifer D. Volk of Arthurdale passed from this life on Friday, June 27 at Select Specialty Hospital in was born on September 29, 1951, in Lynwood, California, a daughter of Bernice Lucille Thacker and Kenneth Jerome began her career at West Virginia University where she worked at the Mountainlair and then was a tour guide. She memorized hundreds of facts about WVU, including trivia like how many tons of cement were in the dome of the Coliseum. She left WVU and worked at OSHA in Morgantown and then became office manager for her husband Joe and office manager for Volkstone. She later became the business manager for her son Nick's trucking business, Nicholas Enterprises, and was there until she became ill in was a devoted and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Jennie was a wonderful host, and her house was always the gathering place for family and friends. Her hospitality was unmatched with great food, fun games, lots of laughter and love. She loved raising her sons on the family farm and watching her granddaughters participate at the Buckwheat Festival livestock shows with their cows and sheep. She attended many horseshow events to watch them win many awards for barrel racing. She loved attending Anthony's t-ball and school functions. Jennie adored her grandchildren, and they brought her much joy and is survived by her husband of 50 years, Joseph A. Volk; her sons, Nick Volk of Arthurdale and Matthew Volk of Morgantown; her three grandchildren, Halle Volk (fiance Kaleb Atkinson) and Emma Volk of Arthurdale and Anthony Volk of Morgantown; two sisters, Mary West (Samuel) of Fairmont and Kenette Shreve (Dennis) of Clarksburg; and two sisters-in-law Beverly Volk of Arthurdale and Jesse Volk of Morgantown. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and Jennie are her three best friends Denise Trickett, Missy Hartsell and Sharon Fridley with whom she took many fun 'girl' trips over the 40 years of their addition to her parents, Jennie was preceded in death by her sisters, Valerie Kay Carlsen and Martha Ellen Carlsen as well as Rose and John Gerard, Eddie Volk, Frank Volk and Margaret and John family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and other staff at Select Specialty Hospital for their kindness and care during the past two months of Jennie's Funeral Home in Masontown, WV is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, July 11, 2025, from 5 to 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 10 a.m. at St. Zita's Catholic Church in will be at the Masontown Cemetery immediately following mass.
