3 key observations from Cowboys training camp practice No 1: Parsons hold-in? QB2 emerges?
That trickled down to the first practice, as Trevon Diggs and Micah Parsons' post practice media scrum were littered with questions about what was missing. Diggs was missing from the offseason work and had to answer questions about his $500,000 in lost salary. Parsons is missing an extension and has begun invoking the thoughts of not being in Dallas for the long term.
The on-field product saw the collective unit get it's first run under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, which offers both coaches and players a reprieve from the circus the owner enjoys conducting; at least for a few hours.
Here are three key observations from training camp's Practice No. 1.
1. Micah Parsons wasn't a full participant in practice
Parsons did appear at practice, and though the expectation was there for him to participate in the practice drills, he was notably absent from a significant portion of the activity. It's clear Parsons is trying to balance the leadership aspect he intends to take on he and Jones have both hammered home publicly. It's also clear Parsons is not keen on risking himself too much while working towards the season and waiting for a new deal.
2. Edge rusher rotation looks like it has a real shot of being dynamic, or is the OL bad?
Every year, it's easy to get caught up in the hype of one side of the ball or another based on training camp performances. The problem is, optimism allows fans and media to see it as positives for one side of the ball and not negatives for the other. This is often the case when trying to evaluate the trenches. Are the defensive linemen really this good, or is the offensive line in for a tough year?
Astute dc.com beat writer Patrik Walker tends to wade through that in his evaluations, so perhaps his first impressions of Marshawn Kneeland's second season and Dante Fowler's second stint will hold true.
It was he [Kneeland], not a cornerback or linebacker, who grabbed the first interception of 2025 training camp ... It ended in the former second-round pick taking away the ball, shedding a would-be tackler or two and tattling off several yards for Matt Eberflus' defense.
Back like he never left, only seemingly better and/or more motivated to prove he's one of the best pass rushers in the league when given the reps, Dante Fowler heft hi imprint all over the first practice. His most notable contribution was on an attempted handoff from Dak Prescott to JaVonte Williams. Fowler teleported to the backfield and nearly got to the ball before Williams did, on a play that would've been destroyed if the players were in a padded practice.
3. Cowboys backup QB appears to be Joe Milton, who had an up and down first practice
The Cowboys acquired second-year QB Joe Milton from the New England Patriots this offseason, and it appears he'll get a ton of work this camp. HC Brian Schottenheimer already admitted on Monday that they were going to limit Dak Prescott's reps, much to his disappointment, and it was Milton not Grier who got the lion's share of extra snaps. According to Walker again, Milton had an up-and-down day, making some nice throws, but also some with shoddy accuracy, as well as fumbling twice.

Four-time Olympic gold-medal winner Léon Marchand is back and chasing more world records
SINGAPORE (AP) — Léon Marchand's life changed drastically after he won four gold medals a year ago in the Paris Olympics. He was a national hero and had to adjust — particularly when he was at home in France. 'I have to plan things,' Marchand explained Saturday. 'I can't just go on my own in the city and just go get bread.' 'I know how to say 'no' better,' he added. 'It gets a lot more peaceful when I travel out of France.' After swimming under the tutelage of Bob Bowman at the University of Texas at Austin, Marchand is back and will head the field at the swimming world championships — the biggest meet since the Olympics. It's also the stepping stone for many toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics with races in the pool starting Sunday and running through Aug. 3. Marchand, Canada's Summer McIntosh, and Katie Ledecky of the United States were the stars in Paris. They'll be the swimmers to watch in Singapore, joined by a host of Olympians and younger swimmers who hope to be in Los Angeles in three years. The youngest in the field is 12-year-old Yu Zidi of China, who could be a medal contender in her three races with times — and youth — that are shocking global swimming. Marchand will swim only the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medleys and some team relays, opting out of his other gold-medal events in Paris — the 200 butterfly and 200 breaststroke. 'This is a transition year for me, so I wanted to have a lighter schedule than usual," Marchand said. 'I'm really excited to do just less than usual, you know, just to see how far I can go, how fast I can go.' Marchand will be after the 200 IM record set in 2011 by American Ryan Lochte — 1 minute, 54.00 seconds. He'll also try to break his own 400 IM record (4:02.50) set at the 2023 worlds in Fukuoka, Japan. He credits Bowman — famous for coaching Michael Phelps to 23 Olympic gold medals — for pushing him at Texas. Bowman tutors an international cast of swimmers that this fall will also include McIntosh. 'He knows how to be calm in every situation,' Marchand said of Bowman. "I think he taught us throughout the years. He also had a lot of experience on the biggest stage, so I trust him fully.' Without the stress of two extra races, Marchand is ready to make more history. 'Of course I want to break all the records,' he said. "I don't know when that's going to happen' Many are expecting it in Singapore. ___ AP sports:

Zach Neto delivers walk-off hit in Angels' 3-2 victory over Mariners
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Zach Neto capped his bobblehead giveaway night with a two-out RBI single in the 10th inning to lift the Los Angeles Angels to a 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night. Jose Rodriguez hit two solo homers for the Mariners, but Angels reliever Ryan Zeferjahn (6-3) escaped a two-on, no-out jam in the top of the 10th, and Neto grounded his winning hit off the glove of diving second baseman Cole Young for the first walk-off hit of his career. Neto had two hits and scored a run, and Jo Adell drove in two runs for the Angels, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Mariners right-hander Casey Legumina (4-5) took the loss. Seattle starter Bryan Woo gave up two runs and four hits in six innings, striking out six and walking two. Angels starter José Soriano allowed two runs and four hits in six innings, striking out five and walking one. Rodriguez lined a 98-mph sinker from Soriano over the right-center field wall in the first for his 16th homer of the season and a 1-0 Mariners lead. Adell, who was mired in a 1-for-20 slump, lined a two-out, two-run double to left in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 lead. Rodriguez opened the sixth with a 408-foot shot to left for his fifth career multihomer game and a 2-all tie. Key Moment With two on, Zeferjahn struck out Cal Raleigh looking with a 99-mph fastball to preserve a 2-2 tie in the 10th. Key Stat Woo has thrown six innings or more with two or fewer walks in all 20 starts this season, the fourth-longest streak of its kind in major league history behind San Francisco's Juan Marichal (23 games in 1968), Seattle/Texas's Cliff Lee (21 games in 2010) and Arizona's Curt Schilling (21 in 2002). Up Next Mariners RHP George Kirby (4-5, 4.65 ERA) opposes Angels LHP Tyler Anderson (2-6, 4.43) on Saturday night. ___ AP MLB: Mike Digiovanna, The Associated Press
