Peer educators help adolescents face life with confidence, empathy and knowledge
Through the Peer Educator Project under the Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK)—an initiative of the National Health Mission and the State Health department—adolescents are being empowered to guide their peers through the challenges of teenage life w i th empathy, confidence, and accurate knowledge.
The concept is simple but revolutionary—teens are trained to educate their peers on topics many shy away from, mental health, reproductive well-being, substance abuse, cyber safety, and more.
M. Maharaj, a Class 10 student at Government Model Residential School, Erumapetty in Thrissur, says: 'This project changed my life. I learned about the dangers of junk food, smoking and cybercrime, and how to handle changes during adolescence. Before, I didn't even realise how vulnerable we are online. Now, I not only protect myself but also educate my friends.'
Maharaj recalls how he helped his classmates understand the risks of mobile phone overuse and the signs of online traps. 'I talk to them about these issues after class. Many didn't know how addiction to gadgets or tobacco could slowly take over their lives.'
Emotional changes
Another Class 10 student, Vaiga Ramesh of Government Higher Secondary School, Erumapetty, speaks about facing teen stress with new confidence. 'I used to be nervous talking about the emotional changes we go through. But through this project, I learned it's normal and we must approach it positively. I now spend less time on my phone and more time on studies and playing with friends.'
Topics
As a pilot project, 200 students across four blocks in Thrissur district were trained, with support from health inspectors and junior public health nurses. Topics ranged from nutrition to self-defence to emotional resilience. Schools appointed nodal teachers. Support systems such as anonymous Q&A boxes helped even the shyest students seek answers.
Trusted guides
Asha M., a teacher from GMRS Wadakkanchery, says: 'The peer educators became trusted guides for their classmates. Health awareness improved, stage fear reduced, and students became more responsible. Some even step in when they see classmates making poor choices.'
With ₹3.5 lakh allocated for 2024-25, the project is showing extraordinary returns—not just in knowledge, but in character building and community impact.
RKSK District Coordinator Nithya Sani affirms: 'This model broke the communication barrier between teens and adults. It encouraged healthy habits and opened the door to seeking professional help when needed.'
From shyness to leadership, from doubt to confidence, the RKSK Peer Educator Project is planting the seeds of a healthier, more aware generation. The next batch of teen educators is set to begin training soon, ensuring that the ripple of change continues to grow.

India Nears Completion of Phase III Dengue Vaccine Trials
New Delhi/Hyderabad: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has confirmed significant progress in the Phase III trial of India's first dengue vaccine, 'DengiAll.' This clinical study, conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), aims to evaluate the efficacy of a live attenuated tetravalent vaccine against all four known serotypes of the dengue virus. This update was provided in response to a question raised by Eatala Rajender, a Member of Parliament, during a Lok Sabha session on Friday. The multi-centre trial has enrolled over 10,000 participants, with more than 70% of the enrollment completed. The study is being conducted at 20 designated research centres across India, including key sites such as JSS Medical College and Hospital in Mysore (Karnataka), Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute in Bengaluru (Karnataka), and AIIMS Bibinagar in Hyderabad (Telangana). Each site has been allocated a budget of approximately Rs 1.3 to Rs 1.5 crore. Dengue remains a major public health challenge in India. Data from the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) indicates that there were 573,563 laboratory-confirmed dengue cases reported in 2024, ranking the country among the top 30 worldwide for disease there is no licensed antiviral treatment or vaccine available for dengue in India. The treatment protocol is supportive, following national clinical management guidelines developed by the Union Health Ministry. These guidelines have been shared with all states and Union Territories to enhance preparedness and response capabilities during outbreaks. Given the circulation of all four dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1 to DENV-4) across different regions of India—sometimes even within the same individual—the ICMR has strategically selected trial zones that reflect this viral diversity. This method aims to assess the vaccine's broad-spectrum efficacy. In parallel, the government is implementing efforts under the National Health Mission (NHM), which include vector control measures, fogging operations, public awareness campaigns, and improved surveillance infrastructure. Sentinel Surveillance Hospitals and Apex Laboratories have been established to facilitate free diagnosis and reporting.

1.78 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs operational across India: Govt
New Delhi, Aug 1 (UNI) A total of 1,78,154 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs), formerly known as Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs), have been operationalised across the country as on July 15, 2025, the government said today "The estimated cost for establishment and maintenance of each AAM is approximately Rs 17.03 lakh, including one-time and recurring annual costs. Funding for AAMs is approved through the National Health Mission's Programme Implementation Plan, submitted by States and Union Territories," Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, shard these details in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. The Ministry also highlighted the 'Free Diagnostics Service Initiative' (FDSI) launched under the National Health Mission in 2015 to provide free pathological and radiological diagnostic services at all levels of public health facilities. The initiative includes 14 tests at Sub Centres and 63 tests at Primary Health Centres. The AAMs, set up by strengthening Sub Health Centres (SHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs), provide comprehensive primary healthcare, encompassing preventive, promotive, rehabilitative, and curative services. These include management of communicable and non-communicable diseases, reproductive and child healthcare, and other health issues. Equipped with upgraded infrastructure, essential drugs, diagnostics, trained personnel, and IT systems, the AAMs deliver twelve packages of primary healthcare services closer to people's homes, said Prataprao Jadhav. Promotive and preventive health form an integral part of care at AAMs, with wellness activities such as yoga, cycling, and meditation being conducted regularly. As of June 30, 2025, over 5.73 crore wellness sessions have been organised. The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) aims to establish a digital health ecosystem enabling interoperability of health data across public and private institutions to ensure seamless care. So far, 79.75 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs have been generated and 65.34 crore Electronic Health Records (EHR) have been linked, said the Minister. UNI AJ RN

Odisha tops India in sickle cell cases: Minister
Kendrapada: Odisha has emerged as the state with the highest number of sickle cell patients in India, with a staggering 96,080 cases registered on the sickle cell portal, according to the latest data shared by Anupriya Patel, minister of state for health and family welfare. In response to a query from Derek O'Brien in the Rajya Sabha, the minister responded that the total number of sickle cell patients across the country now stands at 2,15,380. Following Odisha, Madhya Pradesh reports 30,580 cases, Gujarat 28,150, Maharashtra 23,218, and Chhattisgarh 26,104. Other states with notable numbers include Rajasthan (2,729), Andhra Pradesh (2,159), and Jharkhand (2,154). The data further highlights the prevalence of sickle cell disease in states like Kerala (1,469), West Bengal (883), Karnataka (579), Tamil Nadu (485), and Telangana (468). Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Uttarakhand report lower figures, with 285, 32, 8, and 6 cases respectively. The Union ministry of health and family welfare is actively supporting states and union territories by providing technical and financial assistance. This support is aimed at facilitating screenings, drug procurement, counselling, awareness camps, training of healthcare personnel, and blood transfusion services for sickle cell anaemia. These initiatives are part of the Programme Implementation Plans (PIPs) under the National Health Mission (NHM). Additionally, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Sickle Cell Anaemia (SCA) Mission is being fully funded through CSIR's internal resources, as confirmed by the minister. This mission underscores the govt's commitment to addressing the challenges posed by sickle cell disease in India.
