The Indiana Pacers are inches closer to what could be a historic return to the NBA Finals. Now, all eyes are on their young star Tyrese Haliburton. While Indiana stumbled in Game 5 against the New York Knicks, the spotlight remains firmly on Haliburton.
Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George recently delivered high praise, calling Haliburton 'the face of the NBA' while asserting that Haliburton is reaching superstardom.
Paul George hails Tyrese Haliburton as a superstar in the making
In his recent podcast Podcast P with Paul George, Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George didn't hold back when discussing Haliburton's emergence as a league leader.
'He's the face of the NBA,' George declared. 'I've heard a lot of people critique Tyrese Haliburton.
Some of it's fair, some of it's a stretch… This is his coming out party. He's established now. This is what we expect from him on a nightly basis.'
Paul George on If Tyrese Haliburton Has Reached Superstar Status
George acknowledged Haliburton's role in the Pacers' postseason success, including leading the team to the NBA's first in-season tournament and showing consistent late-game heroics.
'He's been a clutch performer late in games. I think he's got one of the highest closing percentages in the NBA,' George said.

'He's proven he's reliable as the number one option.'
Although Haliburton is primarily a pass-first point guard, George praised his versatility, 'He can be your late-game scorer. He can be an isolation player… He scratched the surface of superstardom. He's here.'
But with high praise comes high expectations, and that pressure showed in Game 5. The Pacers fell flat in Madison Square Garden, losing 111-94 and allowing the Knicks to cut the series deficit to 3-2.
Haliburton, who was electric in Game 4 with a triple-double, managed just 8 points in the loss.
Following the game, Haliburton was not losing his mind over the loss. He urged his team to stay focused.
'We're a resilient group,' he told ESPN. 'We understand what the stakes are... We're fine. There's no need to panic or anything.'
That mindset will be crucial in Game 6, especially with analysts like Charles Barkley calling it a 'must-win' for Indiana.
If they lose at home, a Game 7 in New York looms.

Paul George summed it up, 'You show that you can do it on a night-in, night-out basis. Now with the target on your back, that's when you're bonafide. That's when you're solidified.'
For Haliburton and the Pacers, Game 6 could be that defining moment.

Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal and other NBA legends bid goodbye to fans as Inside the NBA on TNT ends on an emotional note (Image Source: Getty) Basketball's popular show 'Inside the NBA' comes to an end on TNT and it has been a fan favourite for at least 40 years. On Saturday night, it was an emotional moment for all NBA stars where they sat down and discussed how emotional a moment it was for each one of them. An emotional goodbye for all For sports commentator Ernie Johnson, it was beautiful and emotional together. Right before he turned his back at the camera, and when he placed his mic on the desk, and got up from the chair, he said, 'I'm proud to say for the last time, 'Thanks for watching us. It's the NBA on TNT.' With the new season, NBA will be broadcast on ABC and ESPN now, instead of TNT, thanks to a new 11-year-old deal now. Fans can also find NBA games on Amazon Prime Video. For NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal, it was indeed a beautiful moment. For him, even with the change of a name, not a lot will change. He said, 'Even though the name changes, the engine is still the same, And to that new network we're coming to, we're not coming to (expletive) around. ... We're taking over, OK? I love you guys and I appreciate you guys.' For basketball coach Rick Carlisle, it was a sad moment. He said, 'Congratulations to TNT on a fabulous, unbelievable run that's coming to an end, We're all very sad about that.' Meanwhile, sports commentator Kevin Harlan reacted with much more gratitude in his heart. He said, 'Our hearts are full of gratitude, not sadness, but gratitude and happiness for what has been. It has been an honor. It has been a privilege. And I hope you all have enjoyed it as much as we have.' For NBA legend and former basketball shooting guard Reggie Miller, it was a fortunate incident. He said, 'Think about my life. I'm very fortunate, I've only known two things: 18 years with one franchise in this building with the Indiana Pacers, and 19 years with Turner.' 2025 NBA Finals An Unforeseen Clash Of Rising Superstars: Analyzing OKC Thunder And Indiana Pacers
Last Updated: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Tyrese Haliburton lead Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers into a historic NBA Finals matchup starting June 6. An unlikely NBA Finals matchup between two rivals who have never been to the promised land. But, in hindsight, it seems like the seeds for the same were planted almost a decade ago. Back in 2017 — when Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was about to enroll at Kentucky and Tyrese Haliburton was preparing for his senior year of high school in Wisconsin — the Indiana Pacers traded Paul George to the Oklahoma City Thunder, acquiring Domantas Sabonis in return. In 2019, the Thunder traded George to the Los Angeles Clippers for a package that included Gilgeous-Alexander. Later, in 2022, the Pacers traded Sabonis to the Sacramento Kings for a package that included Haliburton. Here we are now. Gilgeous-Alexander is the NBA's MVP and Oklahoma City's best player, while Haliburton is an Olympic gold medalist and Indiana's best player. They will lead their teams into Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night—Indiana at Oklahoma City—in a series that will determine who hoists the Larry O'Brien Trophy. advetisement Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's OKC So Far Depending on how you count, the Thunder are in the finals for either the second time or the fifth time. The franchise, when it was in Seattle, lost the NBA World Championship Series to Washington in 1978, won the title in a rematch against the then-Bullets in 1979, and lost in the NBA Finals to Chicago in 1996. Oklahoma City, bolstered by the holy trinity of Durant, Westbrook, and Harden, reached the finals in 2012, only to lose to a spirited LeBron James-led Miami Heat. This season, the Thunder are 80-18, following a 68-14 regular season and a 12-4 playoff run, sweeping Memphis in Round 1, surviving seven games against Denver in Round 2, and defeating Minnesota in five games for the Western Conference title. Tyrese Haliburton and The Indiana Pacers So Far Indiana is in the NBA Finals for the second time, having lost to the Shaq-Kobe Los Angeles Lakers in 2000. This year, they emerged from the Eastern Conference as the No. 4 seed, defeating Milwaukee in five games in Round 1, top-seeded Cleveland in five games in Round 2, and New York in the conference finals. The Pacers were 10-15 through the first 25 games of the season, then went 40-17 to finish the regular season. They are the fourth team to start 10-15 or worse and win a conference title, joining Seattle in 1977-78 (8-17), the 1956-57 St. Louis Hawks (10-15), and the 1958-59 Minneapolis Lakers (10-15). None of those teams went on to win the NBA title. The Rivalry So Far This Season Oklahoma City swept the season series with Indiana 2-0, part of a regular season where the Thunder, who finished with the NBA's best record, went 29-1 against the Eastern Conference. This does not include a loss to Milwaukee in the NBA Cup final, a game that didn't count in any standings. Advertisement So, the matchup is set. It's the Paul George finals, albeit without Paul George, who had arguably the best season of his career with the Thunder, averaging 28 points and finishing third in the MVP voting for 2018-19, starting at OKC on Thursday. top videos View All (with agency inputs) About the Author Siddarth Sriram Watch CNN-News18 here.
