True grit: Limbless Jafri defies limits to inspire and earn a living
With unwavering determination, Jafri has made it his life's mission to change negative perceptions of people with disabilities (OKU), showing that grit and self-belief matter more than physical limitations.
"Rather than expecting sympathy, my condition gives me strength. I don't see it as a hindrance, but as a motivation to prove that we, too, are capable.
"I'm also blessed to have a supportive wife, Nur Aika Mansor, 30, who accepted me wholeheartedly and has been my pillar of strength.
"As long as I am able, I want to be responsible for providing for my family. Being an OKU has pushed me to do my best, just like anyone else," he said at his home in Panchor.
Affectionately known as "Pak Do", Jafri said he and his wife tried various ventures, including selling second-hand clothes online during the Covid-19 pandemic but had to stop in 2022 due to poor demand.
"Even then, we never gave up. We started selling 'keropok' by the roadside for about a year. Then, in November last year, my wife's family offered us a space at their burger stall. That's where we started our burger business," he said.
Jafri also works as a helper at the stall, earning RM65 per day. Together, the couple now sells up to 50 burgers daily at RM3 each, a feat he takes pride in, despite his physical challenges.
"Initially, the hardest part was separating the burger patties and placing them on the hot plate, since I don't have fingers like everyone else. But over time, I got used to it and can now do it on my own. My wife helps by wrapping the burgers," he said.
The 11th of 12 siblings, Jafri said they hope to one day open a kiosk or a small shop of their own.
To supplement their income, he also takes up small jobs repairing jeans, and processes and sells traditional 'bekok' (dried fermented fish).
While Jafri receives a monthly RM450 allowance from the Welfare Department, he does not want to rely solely on government aid.
"I hope my story inspires other OKU not to give up on life. Don't let your condition become an excuse. With effort, prayer and the right attitude, there is always a way forward," he said.

Russia launches direct flights to North Korea amid closer ties
MOSCOW: Russia initiated direct commercial flights to North Korea on Sunday, marking a significant step in deepening relations between the two nations. The first flight, operated by Nordwind Airlines, departed Moscow for Pyongyang, with tickets priced at 45,000 rubles (\$570). The route will operate once a month, according to Russia's transport ministry. Nordwind Airlines, previously focused on European holiday destinations before EU sanctions, now facilitates this strategic air link. The return flight from Pyongyang to Moscow is scheduled for Tuesday, as reported by Russia's state news agency TASS. The resumption of direct flights follows the restoration of train links on June 17, which had been suspended since 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The move underscores growing cooperation, including military collaboration, with North Korea supplying troops and weapons for Russia's operations in Ukraine. Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a mutual defence pact during Putin's visit to Pyongyang. In April, North Korea confirmed deploying soldiers to Ukraine's frontline alongside Russian forces. – AFP

Ipoh to have 12 new Madani recreational parks by end July, says Nga
IPOH: The development of 12 Madani Recreational Parks here, costing RM5.4mil is expected to be fully completed by the end of July, as part of the government's commitment to providing conducive recreational spaces for the public, says Nga Kor Ming. The Housing and Local Government Minister stated that the parks were implemented by the Ipoh City Council (MBI) following the allocation received from the ministry. He said each park was developed at a cost of RM450,000, with the Canning Madani Recreational Park among those completed in the city. "Under the ministry, we have a vision of 1,000 parks, comprising 1,000 community parks and open spaces in residential areas, to allow local communities to enjoy greener, more beautiful and cleaner public parks in line with the Madani economic framework. "In line with the Madani government's aspirations, we aim to build a nation that is sustainable, competitive, innovative and prosperous. The people's well-being is our priority," he said. Nga said this at a press conference after officiating the Canning Madani Recreational Park and launching the Ipoh City Council (MBI)-Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd (KLK) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme here on Sunday (July 27). Earlier, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between KLK and MBI to collaborate in maintaining seven such parks around Ipoh for two years. Nga said KLK's teams would visit the parks every two weeks to carry out fertilising, pesticide application, grass cutting and other maintenance work. "The seven parks that will be maintained by KLK are Woodland Park 1 Tambun, Woodland Park 2 Tambun, Canning, Bandar Baru Putra, Westpool Park, Pengkalan Barat and First Garden. This is an initial step. "This collaboration is a good initiative, and I hope more major companies will come forward to contribute their energy and service in building a clean, green, prosperous, peaceful and harmonious Ipoh," he said. - Bernama
