China says ready to 'expand practical cooperation' with Russian army
The two countries have drawn closer in recent years, including since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Mr. Xi's trip to Russia last week drew ire from Kyiv's allies, who have accused Beijing of giving Moscow economic and political cover to wage a war of aggression.
Beijing says it is a neutral party to the conflict and has made indefatigable efforts for peace.
On Thursday, in response to a question linked to Mr. Xi's visit, asking how China would promote military-to-military ties with Russia, the defence ministry said the relationship was "operating at a high level".
"The Chinese military stands ready to work with the Russian side to further deepen strategic mutual trust, step up strategic communication, and expand practical cooperation," Defence Ministry spokesman Jiang Bin said in a response posted to social media platform WeChat.
The moves would "enrich the content of China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era", Jiang said.
He added that they would also "contribute to maintaining and strengthening global strategic stability".
After a lengthy meeting with President Vladimir Putin on his trip, Mr. Xi said China's ties with Russia brought "positive energy" to a turbulent world.
He added that both nations stood firm against "hegemonic bullying" — an apparent swipe at the United States.
Mr. Putin, for his part, told reporters he and Xi had held "traditionally warm, friendly" talks and addressed the Chinese leader as his "dear friend".

Zelenskyy tells European leaders and Trump that Putin 'is bluffing'
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he told European leaders and Donald Trump on Wednesday (August 13, 2025) that Russian President Vladimir Putin 'is bluffing' ahead of the planned summit with the U.S. in Alaska. Mr. Putin, Mr. Zelenskyy said in a meeting, 'is trying to apply pressure ... on all sectors of the Ukrainian front" in an attempt to show that Russia is 'capable of occupying all of Ukraine.' Mr. Putin is also bluffing about sanctions, 'as if they do not matter to him and are ineffective. In reality, sanctions are very helpful and are hitting Russia's war economy hard,' Mr. Zelenskyy said.

Russia imposes curbs on WhatsApp, Telegram calls
MOFilw: Russia announced curbs on calls on the WhatsApp and Telegram messenger apps on Wednesday, saying that this was necessary to fight criminality, state media reported. "In order to combat criminals, measures are being taken to partially restrict calls on these foreign messaging apps (WhatsApp and Telegram)," communications watchdog Roskomnadzor said, as quoted by the RIA and TASS news agencies. The messenger apps have become "the main voice services used for fraud and extortion, and for involving Russian citizens in subversive and terrorist activities," the watchdog added. Russian security services have frequently claimed that Ukraine was using Telegram to recruit people or commit acts of sabotage in Russia. Moscow wants the messengers to provide access to data upon request from law enforcement, not only for fraud probes but also for investigating activities that Russia describes as terrorist ones. "Access to calls in foreign messengers will be restored after they start complying with Russian legislation," Russia's digital ministry said. In a statement sent to AFP, Telegram said it "actively combats misuse of its platform, including calls for sabotage or violence, as well as fraud" and removes "millions of pieces of harmful content every day". Since launching its offensive in Ukraine, Russia has drastically restricted press freedom and freedom of speech online.
