Pakistan's climate change to hit GDP: WB report
'Alarmingly, Pakistan is currently losing around 6% of its GDP due to inefficient urban transport,' said Tauqeer Ahmed Rana, an expert in the area of Road Safety, quoting from the above report.
He added that efficient urban transport planning will enhance urbanization-driven economic gains and improve impaired mobility.
The World Bank report on Pakistan stated that the country will need $368 billion by 2030 for climate mitigation and adaptation if it were to avoid floods, droughts, and heat waves.
'But the harsh reality is that despite committing billions of dollars, whatever meagre funds received so far are mostly in the form of loans rather than grants, further exacerbating the economic and financial woes of the developing and the underdeveloped,' said Tauqeer.

Pakistan launches PRISM+ to upgrade payment and settlement system
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) launched its upgraded payment and settlement system, PRISM+, on Tuesday. 'Previously, we launched RAAST, Pakistan's instant payment system. With today's launch, Pakistan joins those few countries whose retail and large value payment systems and other infrastructure are based on the latest ISO standard,' said SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad, while addressing the launching ceremony. The central bank chief acknowledged the contribution of the World Bank in bringing 'this project to life'. 'Today, our financial landscape is rapidly digitising across payments, fintech, e-commerce and banking. We see innovation driving change both in service delivery and consumer preferences'. He said the recent digitisation of the ecosystem is visible in the emergence of retail payment infrastructure, i.e. RAAST. SBP chief says low domestic savings key structural challenge RAAST is Pakistan's first instant payment system that will enable end-to-end digital payments among individuals, businesses and government entities instantaneously. Ahmad informed that Pakistan has over 225 million bank account holders and digital wallet holders, of which around 96 million are unique. 'We have 28 million registered users of banking apps of commercial banks, 71 million users of branchless banking apps and 17 million users of the internet banking platform,' he said. The central bank chief highlighted the RTGS [Real Time Gross Settlement], a system for transferring large sums of money between banks in real-time. 'It ensures liquidity flows and supports the implementation of monetary policy through open market operations (OMO). The RTGS minimizes the risk of financial disruptions,' he said. Talking about PRISM [Pakistan Real-time Interbank Settlement Mechanism], the RTGS used in Pakistan, Jameel shared that in 2024, PRISM processed transactions worth Rs1,043 trillion. 'To put this in perspective, PRISM processed transactions 10 times the country's GDP,' he said. 'This shows the extent to which the PRISM supports the broader financial industry, especially our business community. 'With the implementation of PRISM+, we now move toward the next stage of progress. This system is built on the ISO 2022 financial messaging standard, which supports structured and data-rich financial communications.' He said PRISM+ also offers enhanced transparency, interoperability and automation across the payment and settlement ecosystem. 'This new platform also introduces advanced features, including liquidity management tools for smooth funds flow,' he said. Jameel said Pakistan's payment system now stands at par with global best practices. 'As we expand our digital payment infrastructure, security remains our key regulatory priority,' he said. Jameel emphasised that Pakistan's financial system must remain secure, transparent and trusted. He informed that PRISM+ was completed and went live in 14 months. 'PRISM+ is not just a technical system; it is a strategic asset to safeguard financial stability and support innovations of the new digital age,' he concluded.

CM directs to use modern Japanese tech for waste treatment
LAHORE: 'Japan's modern technology and methods will be used for sewage and waste management in Punjab,' said Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif during her visit to Japan's largest waste water treatment plant. She inspected the waste treatment systems of Asahi, Yokohama City, Kanagawa, Washimaku and Yodogawa. The chief minister was given a detailed briefing on methods of collecting garbage and waste water along with waste disposal systems of Japanese cities. She was apprised by the authorities concerned, 'Yokohama is the second largest city in Japan in terms of population, its Solid Waste and Wastewater Treatment Plant treats 1.5 million liters of wastewater daily.' She was also briefed, 'Yokohama Waste Treatment Plant is also operating several plants that generate energy from waste. This energy is used for heating systems for the local population.' Yokohama, Punjab agree on ‘city-to-city' cooperation
LAHORE: 'Yokohama and Punjab have agreed on 'city-to-city' cooperation in various fields including environment protection and providing modern development systems to cities,' said Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif during her visit to Japan's commercial, economic and cultural center 'Yokohama.' The CM and her delegation members were given a detailed briefing on urban development at Yokohama Town Hall. She discussed on how to bring construction quality of roads and buildings in Punjab at par with that of Japan. She also discussed various possibilities of cooperation between Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) and Yokohama. The Chief Minister reviewed possibilities of cooperation in running a high-speed train between Lahore and Islamabad, besides upgradation of railway infrastructure in the province. She also reviewed the latest Japanese chairlift and air cabin projects. She was apprised, 'Kun-Hun' the three cities of Tokyo, Kawasaki and Yokohama are located in a region called industrial zone of Japan.' She was briefed by the authorities concerned, 'Yokohama is the second largest city in Japan in terms of population, and in May 2025, annual conference of Asian Development Bank declared Yokohama the most developed city in Asia in terms of environmental improvement.' Moreover, the CM who is on a five-day official visit to Japan, visited different parts of 'Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse,' whose new name is 'Newport Pier Bonded Warehouse' due to its location along the port. She also visited a centre for teaching skills to children, under community welfare in the warehouse. The Chief Minister saw children making things from paper and other materials. The children showed her various examples of their creative talents. She congratulated the children and interacted with them. Maryam Nawaz Sharif said, 'A model of community welfare is also being promoted in Punjab.' She added, 'We are also adopting methods of education and skill development on modern lines, besides providing facilities to children of Punjab.'
