Jaundice outbreak reported from Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam district

Kochi: A major jaundice (Hepatitis A) outbreak is spreading in Avoly and nearby panchayats in Muvattupuzha, around 47km from the city. Since the first case was reported on May 30, as many as 51 primary cases were reported until Monday. Of the 51 cases, 21 are from Avoly. With the incubation period of Hepatitis A virus being two weeks to 45 days, health authorities expect more cases to surface in the coming days. Officials from district medical office visited Avoly on Monday and directed measures to contain the infection from spreading further. Hepatitis A is contracted from contaminated water or food. The source of the infection is suspected to be food served during a pre-wedding function at a house in Nadukkara, ninth ward of Avoly panchayat, on May 3. Around 150 people, including neighbours and relatives from Avoly, Manjalloor and Arakuzha panchayats in Muvattupuzha and Idukki and Alappuzha districts attended the event. Even ward members contracted jaundice after attending the function. A catering agency, from Marady panchayat, served food at the house on May 3. The same agency served food during a wedding function on May 5. Following the outbreak, health authorities closed the agency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Eat 1 Teaspoon Every Night, See What Happens A Week Later [Video] getfittoday Undo Reportedly, the agency used cold water from the house to dilute boiled water before serving it. "Only those who attended the pre-wedding function were infected with jaundice. However, we couldn't collect water samples from the house well for testing as the first case was reported on May 30. Before that, we did routine chlorination in the well as part of the local body's regular exercise. Ice cream, chutney to serve with dosa and other items were served during the function. Items like chutney are prepared with cold water. Also, they diluted boiled water with the house well water. We couldn't confirm which food item was the source of the outbreak. Our current objective is to ensure no secondary infection. For that, an awareness class to those who attended the function is underway," said an Avoly health official. Wells in the affected areas are now being super chlorinated by increasing the quantity of chlorine depending on water in it. Nadukkara ward member Selby John refuted the chances of infection from the house. "The family cleaned their well a week before the function. Hence, there is no chance of it being the source of the outbreak. The source of the infection must be the ice cubes used in welcome drinks. None of those infected is in a serious condition," Selby said.

India's fertility rate: 3 generations reflect evolving family reality

NEW DELHI: Sixty-four-year-old Saraswati Devi was married off at 16 in 1976, and by the time she was 30, she was a mother to five sons. If she could do it all over again, Saraswati says she would have fewer children. But her granddaughter Pooja Kumari today has a voice. A graduate, married at 22, she and her husband decided to not have more than two children. The story of Saraswati, her daughter-in-law and granddaughter - three generations of women reflect India's evolving fertility story and their journey finds space in UNFPA's 2025 State of World Population Report. Residents of Bihar's Sheikhpura district, they reflected on how things have changed from grandmothers to granddaughters over 65 years as women gained a voice slowly to an extent over generations affecting fertility aspirations. Saraswati shared that when she was young all the other women in her village had about that many children. If women had fewer, people thought they were sick, Saraswati recalled. "My mother-in-law always said, "The more children you have, the more hands there are to work in the fields." "We didn't know about contraceptives back then," she said. "When I wanted to stop having children, my mother-in-law insisted that I continue, and I could not disobey her," recalled the 64-year-old. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Device Made My Power Bill Drop Overnight elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Pre-Order Undo Her daughter-in law Anita Devi (42) got married when she was 18 years old in the late 1990s. Unlike her mother-in-law, Anita knew about family planning as health workers visited her village. Nevertheless, she ended up having six children- four daughters and two sons - as her husband and mother-in-law wanted more children, especially a son. But things drastically changed for her daughter Pooja Kumari who is 26 and had her first child at 23. In the following three years, she used contraceptives provided by an Accredited Social Health Activist. She recently decided to have a second child. "We want to raise them well, provide them with a good education, and ensure a secure future for our family. A small family is best," she said. The report noted that in 1960, when India's population was about 436 million, the average woman had nearly six children. But in the years that followed, educational attainment increased, access to reproductive healthcare improved, and more women got a voice. The average woman in India now has about two children.

Avaada Butibori plant is India's 1st to make 720Wp solar modules

Nagpur: Avaada Electro, which is building a solar power equipment plant at Butibori, has claimed to be the first to manufacture large-sized 720 Watt peak (Wp) TOPcon solar modules in the country. The plant at Butibori near Nagpur is expected to emerge as the country's largest solar modules and cells manufacturing facility. Avaada's projects in the state entail an investment of Rs13,000 crore, most of which is for the Butibori plant. The company has now begun manufacturing 720Wp modules at Butibori. It is currently importing the cells, which are a key component for making modules, from China. However, there are plans to operationalise the cell-making unit also by October. This will enable fully indigenous manufacturing of solar modules, doing away with dependence on China, said company officials. Even China started making 720Wp capacity modules less than a year ago. Avaada is expected to be second globally after China, said a source. Avaada Electro had performed the groundbreaking ceremony for its Butibori plant last October. Modules are the equipment that generate solar power. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo They are made of numerous solar cells. So far, modules made in India have smaller 182x183mm M10 cells which can generate 595Wp solar power. Avaada has begun manufacturing modules made of 220x220mm G12 cells. The modules have the capacity to generate as much as 720Wp power, explained a company official. The manufacturing of the first phase with a capacity of 1.5 gigawatts (GW) has started at Butibori . By July, the full capacity of making modules with a combined capacity of 7GW is expected to be reached. Modules made through the G12 cells can generate more solar power in less area due to the cell's size. Solar module installations occupy a sizeable area, said the source. Similarly, the company has also commercially launched the 630Wp solar modules. The Butibori plant has also been included in the ministry of renewable energy's (MRE) approved list of models and manufacturers (ALMM). This will ensure Avaada's eligibility for taking part in the govt tenders. The Butibori unit has already started supplying solar panels for the state govt's Mukhya Mantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana -- the state govt project for supplying solar power to farmers. According to company chairman Vineet Mittal with ALMM accreditation of the Butibori plant and the launch of 720Wp and 630Wp cells, the company hopes to achieve a major revolution in the sector. With Butibori emerging as a prime destination for solar energy equipment makers, Avaada is the first to start production. Other companies like Jindal Group and Waaree Energies also have similar plans for Nagpur.
