
Manchester Airport faces calls to make huge change to drop-off rules
A travel company has urged Manchester Airport and parking firm APCOA to reconsider their new drop-off charges. Manchester-based online travel agent On The Beach has written an open letter to the airport and APCOA, calling on them to "reconsider the 24-hour payment deadline for drop-off fees" and suggesting they "give people 48 hours to pay".
Manchester Airport responded by stating that the 24-hour payment period is a minimum timeframe and that drivers often have more than 24 hours to pay in most instances. Earlier this year, Manchester Airport introduced a new barrierless drop off system which utilises Automated Number Plate Recognition technology, allowing drivers to leave immediately without paying at the exit barrier.
Instead, they are required to pay the charge by midnight the following day, either online or over the phone. At all three terminals, the drop off charge is £5 for five minutes, rising to £6.40 for up to 10 minutes.
For those who stay up to 30 minutes, the maximum allowed time, a charge of £25 must be paid. If drivers fail to pay within the time limit, they will receive a parking charge of £100, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days. Some passengers have been caught out by the barrierless system, including one couple from Widnes who claimed they "forgot to pay for parking" after their visit to Manchester Airport on July 5, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Manchester Airport has defended its new system, claiming it provides a "quicker and smoother experience" for drivers. The airport also emphasised that the 24-hour deadline is the minimum time frame, meaning if a driver drops off a passenger at 1am, they have until midnight the following day to pay - up to 47 hours. They've also increased signage in the drop-off area.
Zoe Harris, chief customer officer at On The Beach, penned a 'humorous' open-letter saying: "At On the Beach, we're proud of our Manchester roots, and send tens of thousands of happy holidaymakers from Manchester Airport every year. But recently, there's been a bit of turbulence, and not the kind that requires a seatbelt sign."
"We're writing on behalf of our customers (and their forgetful family and friends) to ask that you reconsider the 24-hour payment deadline for drop-off fees. Why? Because far too many of our customers' designated drop-off drivers are being stung with up to £100 in fines because of your super short payment period."
She explained: "With the summer holidays upon us, this is about to get a whole lot worse. Millions of families will be heading to Manchester Airport over the coming weeks, many of them relying on friends, family or kind neighbours to do the drop-off.
"These people aren't taking a holiday; they're doing a favour. A noble sacrifice. And they shouldn't be punished for forgetting to pay a fiver while trying to understand why they have holiday blues after spending 5 minutes driving through the airport. Being the one left behind is painful enough, the least we can do is make sure they're not also financially punished for forgetting to pay a parking fee within 24 hours. Especially when forgetting can result in a £100 fine. Ouch."
Zoe concluded: "So, we're asking, kindly, firmly, and with a hint of British sarcasm, to double the time. Give people 48 hours to pay. That's all. Just a fairer window to remember to pay a parking fee before the financial sunburn sets in. Let's work together to take the sting out of going to the airport without actually getting to go on holiday. It's the least we can do for those left waving at drop off."
In response to the letter, a Manchester Airport spokesman said: "Removing barriers in our drop-off and pick-up areas is allowing us to better manage traffic flow on our site and has made the process quicker and smoother for drivers. That helps them to avoid entering the higher price brackets as a result of longer stays. The system is similar to those in use on toll roads and bridges across the country and a number of other UK airports also operate a barrierless drop-off and pick-up system.
"It is not accurate to say that drivers have 24 hours to pay drop-off and pick-up charges. They have until midnight the day after their visit to pay online or over the phone. That means for a large number of passengers using the airport at our busiest times, people have close to 48 hours in which to pay."
"Passengers can also set up an AutoPay account so that their fee is deducted automatically, removing the need to remember to pay," they added. "These changes were made in conjunction with an extensive communications campaign that included installing prominent signage in drop-off and pick-up areas, as well as media and social media promotion. The overwhelming majority of passengers are paying by midnight the following day and as we implement these changes, we are closely monitoring passenger feedback."
A On the Beach spokesperson told the Mirror: "Ok, so it's 24 hours minimum - but come on, it's pretty confusing. Drop off at 11pm? You get 25 hours. Drop off at 5pm? That's 31. No wonder our customers are getting caught out. We're just asking for one extra day to pay. Just one, so a 48 hour minimum. Not exactly outrageous, is it?"

UK house prices increase by 0.6% month-on-month in July, says Nationwide
House prices increased by 0.6% month-on-month on average in July – following a 0.9% monthly fall in June, according to an index. The annual rate of house price growth accelerated to 2.4% typically in July, from 2.1% in June, Nationwide Building Society said. This took the average UK house price to £272,664. Robert Gardner, Nationwide's chief economist, said: 'Looking through the volatility generated by the end of the stamp duty holiday, activity appears to be holding up well. Indeed, 64,200 mortgages for house purchase were approved in June, broadly in line with the pre-pandemic average, despite the changed interest rate environment. 'After deteriorating markedly in the wake of the pandemic, housing affordability has been steadily improving, thanks to a period of strong income growth alongside more subdued house price growth and a modest fallback in mortgage rates. 'While the price of a typical UK home is around 5.75 times average income, this ratio is well below the all-time high of 6.9 recorded in 2022 and is currently the lowest this ratio has been for over a decade. 'This is helping to ease deposit constraints for potential buyers, as has an improvement in the availability of higher loan to value mortgages. 'Similarly, the interest rate on a typical five-year fixed-rate mortgage is around 4.3% (for a borrower with a 25% deposit). This is still over three times the all-time lows prevailing in autumn 2021, but well below the highs of (around) 5.7% reached in late 2023.' Mr Gardner said that despite wider economic uncertainties in the global economy, underlying conditions for potential home buyers in the UK remain supportive. He said: 'Unemployment remains low, earnings are still rising at a healthy pace, household balance sheets are strong and borrowing costs are likely to moderate a little further if (the Bank of England base rate) is lowered further in the coming quarters as we, and most other analysts, expect. 'Providing the broader economic recovery is maintained, housing market activity is likely to continue to strengthen gradually in the quarters ahead.' Matt Thompson, head of sales at London-based estate agent Chestertons, said: 'Last month alone, some of our branches have seen an evident uplift in the number of vendors wanting to sell which has motivated more buyers to resume their search and make an offer.' Nathan Emerson, CEO at property professionals' body Propertymark, said: 'Many people are delaying paying off their mortgages until later in life via 35-year or 40-year mortgages. Therefore, a reduction in interest rates would be very welcome to help offset ongoing financial pressures and worries over the cost of living for many.' Mark Harris, chief executive of mortgage broker SPF Private Clients, said: 'Lower mortgage rates, with the expectation of more reductions to come, are giving the market impetus and putting borrowers in a stronger position when it comes to negotiating their property purchase. This, in turn, is keeping prices in check. 'With the markets expecting a further rate reduction next week, we could be in for a busy autumn. Lenders continue to trim their mortgage rates, while easing of mortgage lending rules should also enable borrowers to take on bigger mortgages in coming months.' Earlier this week, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) reported that house sales jumped by 13% month-on-month in June. Across the UK, it estimated that 93,530 home sales took place during the month, which was 1% higher than in June 2024. Bank of England figures have shown that mortgage approvals for house purchase have ticked upwards, with around 64,200 approvals made to home buyers in June – the highest figure since March this year. Alice Haine, personal finance analyst at Bestinvest by Evelyn Partners, said: 'While some buyers are clearly pressing ahead with their purchase plans, as reflected in robust mortgage approval data for June, others may now be mulling their options more carefully as higher costs pose a fresh challenge. 'Lenders are offering solutions, however, not only with more relaxed affordability rules, but also by ramping up the number of low-deposit or 100% mortgages on offer to help more first-time buyers onto the property ladder. Longer-term mortgages, where the repayment period is stretched beyond the traditional 25-year term to 30, 35 or even 40 years are also becoming increasingly popular.' Karen Noye, a mortgage expert at wealth manager Quilter, said: 'All eyes will be on the Bank of England next week and what it decides to do with interest rates. It was thought that a rate cut was fairly certain on Thursday, but recent inflation data coming in higher than expected may just temper things slightly and force buyers to wait. 'Should the Bank of England follow through with a rate cut, however, that will help support the buyers.' Tom Bill, head of UK residential research at Knight Frank, said: 'Sticky inflation means a probable cut by the Bank of England next week may only be followed by one more this year. Despite a modest uptick in July, high levels of supply are keeping a lid on prices and means it is still very much a buyers' market.' Iain McKenzie, CEO of the Guild of Property Professionals, said: 'For sellers, realistic pricing is crucial to capture buyers' attention in a more competitive landscape. For buyers, the combination of more choice and the likelihood of further mortgage rate improvements creates a compelling window of opportunity.' Jonathan Handford, managing director at estate agent group Fine & Country, said: 'Properties purchased during the Covid-era 'race for space' – particularly in coastal and rural areas – are increasingly returning to the market as commuting patterns normalise and lifestyle priorities shift. This added supply is helping to moderate price pressures in some regions.' Sarah Coles, head of personal finance, Hargreaves Lansdown, said: 'A combination of pay rises ahead of inflation, falling mortgage rates and keenly-priced properties could start to reignite buyer enthusiasm in the coming months.' Jonathan Hopper, CEO of Garrington Property Finders, said: 'Most buyers are still being prudent and pragmatic.'

Scottish investment fund battle sees major development
Proxy adviser ISS has now recommended shareholders in the venture capital trust should vote against resolutions put by its former manager to oust its board. ISS, which describes itself as 'a global provider of independent and objective shareholder meeting research and recommendations', has said that investors in Maven Renovar VCT should vote for the resolutions to reappoint the existing directors. Former manager Paul Jourdan, of Edinburgh-based investment house Amati, and other shareholders have requisitioned a general meeting of Maven Renovar VCT, which will be held on August 13, for which they have put forward resolutions seeking to remove the board of Maven Renovar VCT and appoint four replacement directors, including Mr Jourdan, in their place. The management contract for the venture capital trust, which has about 8,000 shareholders, was moved in May by the board to Glasgow-based private equity specialist Maven. Maven Renovar VCT said this morning: 'ISS recommends that shareholders vote 'against' the requisitioned resolutions at the requisitioned general meeting on 13 August 2025. ISS also recommends that shareholders vote 'for' the re-appointment resolutions at the articles general meeting on 13 August 2025. 'These recommendations are in line with the unanimous recommendations of the company's board, which has previously outlined its recommendations to vote against the requisitioned resolutions to be proposed at the requisitioned general meeting and in favour of the re-appointment resolutions to be proposed at the articles general meeting.' Fiona Wollocombe, who chairs Maven Renovar VCT, said today, "The board welcomes the recommendation from ISS for shareholders to vote against the requisitioned resolutions proposed by the company's former manager and a small group of other shareholders on 30 June 2025. 'ISS assessed the requisitioned resolutions against their published voting guidelines - specifically whether board change is required and whether the requisitioners have shown they can deliver positive change - but agreed with your board that shareholders should reject all of the requisitioned resolutions. We hope this reiterates the importance that shareholders must vote to prevent the requisitioners' proposed directors taking control of your company."

Sheffield Wednesday crisis: Growing EFL fear that first game of new season 'won't happen'
Sheffield Wednesday are in chaos as fears grow over whether their opening match of the season will take place after players were not paid on time for a third month in a row The English Football League is growing concerned that Sheffield Wednesday's first fixture of the Championship season is under threat. The Owls have already seen their friendly with Burnley cancelled this coming weekend after the club failed to pay its players for the third month in a row. The Yorkshire side found its stars unwilling to play their final pre-season friendly against the Clarets as the game was cancelled on the same day new manager Henrik Pederson took over after the departure of Danny Rohl. Wednesday are just nine days out from their first competitive match of the season against Leicester City. The EFL are in contact with club officials and are 'increasingly alarmed' by developments at Hillsborough. The side have already been charged by the EFL with multiple breaches of its financial regulations. It comes as Wednesday are already under a transfer embargo and they face a points deduction. Owner Dejphon Chansiri has come under fire from fans and local politicians in Sheffield. The latest uncertainty follows a summer that has already seen a number of players depart Josh Windass and Michael Smith ended their contracts by mutual consent earlier this month with Pederson leading just a small selection of senior players. Wednesday were meant to play against Burnley on Saturday in a behind closed doors match. It was to be their final friendly fixture before the new season as the club last faced Mansfield Town in a training exercise last month. They are being directed to a group who specialise in the sale of football clubs, with NDAs being signed and proper process followed. Two bids have been rejected from a Florida-based consortium made up of business and professional sportspeople. That has included Sheffield-born Adam Shaw who has made his money Stateside. There is also believed to be interest from numerous other parties, including former Crystal Palace part-owner John Textor and potential bids from the Middle East. On Tuesday, Sheffield city council issued the club with a prohibition notice in order to prevent them from housing spectators in Hillsborough's North Stand. Councillor Joe Otten noted the decision was made after they consulted with engineering speecialists who could not 'reconfirm that the North Stand is safe for spectator use'. Chansiri's leadership has been slammed. Sheffield South MP Clive Betts recently hit out his "abject failure" at Hillsborough. 'This is yet another abject failure of Chansiri who is unable to competently run Sheffield Wednesday," said Betts. "This is just the most recent issue in a host of problems he has brought and failing to recognise and address. Chansiri clearly has no idea what he is doing with the club and should just move on and sell to an owner that will actually care about the club and its fans.'
