Only Dhankhar, PM Modi know real reason behind VP's exit: Mallikarjun Kharge

Time of India27-07-2025
NEW DELHI: Congress president
Mallikarjun Kharge
on Sunday said he has no information on the actual reason for Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation as Vice President, holding that it was for Dhankhar to tell what really happened, as the matter was between him and
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
.
"I don't know all those details. He (Dhankhar) was always on the govt's side. He should say what happened," Kharge was reported as saying by news agency PTI, in response to a question on whether Dhankhar was forced to resign as he spoke in favour of farmers. Kharge was at Vijayapura in Karnataka. "When we raised several issues concerning farmers, the poor, international issues or foreign policy, he never used to give us an opportunity (in Rajya Sabha as its Chairman)," the Congress president said.
"When we tried to raise issues by giving notices on issues regarding the poor, atrocities against women, Dalits and the downtrodden, and incidents like Hindu-Muslim clashes, he did not give us an opportunity. It (the reason for Dhankhar's resignation as Vice President) is between him and Modi. We don't have any information on that," Kharge clarified. Notwithstanding Kharge's stance, senior leaders from his party have, since Dhankhar's abrupt departure as VP, have been asserting that there is far more to the episode than meets the eye.

Shashi Tharoor says ‘schoolyard bully' Trump picked ‘a wrong target'

After US President Donald Trump's recent "dead economy" barb against India amid the ongoing tariff row, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that the Republican leader has provoked the wrong country. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday said that India must also safeguard its own interests.(PTI) In an interview with India Today, the Congress MP slammed the US President for targeting New Delhi with what he called "insulting language" and called India a "wrong target" for Trump. "Trump is famous for his unconventional techniques. He will say and do anything to make a deal he wants. He may have picked the wrong target for insulting language," the Thiruvananthapuram MP said. Calling Trump a "schoolyard bully", Tharoor said, "India's self-respect was sacrosanct and simply not up for bargaining." "I don't believe it is right for Mr Trump to speak to India this way. Whoever is in the Indian government, whichever party is in power, our self-respect is simply not up for bargaining. As far as the substance is concerned, by all means keep a cool head, by all means try to negotiate over the next three weeks and try to explain to Americans why we have certain red lines. We have 700 million people in our country who are dependent on agriculture. We cannot sell them down the river with subsidised American grains flooding our market. There are other areas where we might be able to show some flexibility and some give," the Kerala MP was quoted as saying by India Today. Trump's tariff war against India Trump's controversial remarks came amid escalating tensions, with the US imposing steep tariffs on Indian goods and accusing India of maintaining some of the "highest tariffs in the world." On August 6, the US announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on all Indian imports, in addition to an existing 25 per cent duty, taking the total duty to 50 per cent effective August 27. The White House said the measure responds to India's continued purchase of Russian oil. The imposition of an additional 25% duty on India is a 'national security issue' associated with New Delhi's 'abject refusal to stop buying Russian oil', White House trade adviser Peter Navarro has said. India will have to look after its own interests: Tharoor Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday said that India must also safeguard its own interests. "What is happening is concerning. A country with which we had close relations and worked as strategic partners. If that country has changed its behaviour, then India will have to think about many in the coming two to three weeks, we can hold talks and find a way out. India will also have to look after its own interests," Tharoor said.

EC should respond to Rahul Gandhi with facts, not planted news: AAP's Saurabh Bhardwaj

Synopsis Following Rahul Gandhi's claims of a 'choreographed' 2024 election, the Election Commission demanded a declaration or apology. Saurabh Bhardwaj of AAP has now challenged the poll body. He questioned the CEC's conduct and urged a factual response to Gandhi's vote theft allegations. Bhardwaj referenced past concerns about voter list manipulation. He criticized Gandhi for not addressing the issue earlier. ANI EC should respond to Rahul Gandhi with facts, not planted news: AAP's Saurabh Bhardwaj New Delhi: After the Election Commission asked Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to either sign a declaration or apologise for his "absurd" allegations, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bhardwaj said the poll body should respond with facts. Speaking to ANI, the AAP leader accused the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar of "planting news" based on sources. "...Gyanesh Kumar ji should be ashamed. Can the Election Commission plant news quoting sources? If he has any self-respect left, then he should take action against those who ran the information about Rahul Gandhi on sources.... Before the Delhi election, we had told EC about voter list what happened? Where was Rahul Gandhi when we had raised this issue before him? At the time, he should have raised his voice. When he did this, he didn't fulfil his responsibility... The Election Commission should respond to him with facts..." Bhardwaj told ANI. This comes after the Election Commission of India (ECI) asked Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to sign the declaration by the Chief Electoral Officers of Maharashtra and Karnataka or apologise for his "absurd" allegations, according to sources. At a press conference on August 7, Rahul Gandhi claimed that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were "choreographed" by the EC to benefit the BJP, which he said appeared "immune to anti-incumbency." Citing internal analysis, Gandhi said the Congress expected to win 16 seats in Karnataka but ended up with only nine. He said the Congress investigated seven unexpected losses, zeroing in on Mahadevapura, where he alleged vote theft involving 1,00,250 votes. Presenting Congress's research on voting in the Mahadevapura Assembly in Karnataka, Rahul Gandhi alleged "vote chori" (vote theft) of 1,00,250 votes."Our internal polling told us we would win 16 seats in Karnataka; we won nine. We then focused on seven unexpected losses. We focused on data is 2024 data from the Election Commission; the total votes polled in the Lok Sabha were 6.26 lakhs. The BJP won with 6,58,915, securing a margin of 32,707. But then we look at Mahadevapura, where Congress polls 1,15,586 and BJP polls 2,29,632. Congress wins all Vidhan Sabhas but this one," the Congress leader said. "We found 1,00,250 votes stolen. Stolen in five different ways. Duplicate voters, fake and invalid addresses, and bulk voters in a single address, on a building with 50-60 people living. But when we go there, no record of those people living there. One family living in that house," he said.

SUDA Chairman accuses BJP, BRS leaders of spreading false propaganda against Congress government over notices issued under Dam Safety Act

Satavahana Urban Development Authority (SUDA) chairman Komatireddy Narender Reddy has accused both the BRS and BJP local leaders of trying to defame the Congress government by resorting to false propaganda over the notices served by the competent authorities in Hasnapuram and Bathukamma Colonies near the Lower Manair Dam (LMD) here as per the Dam Safety Act of 2021. Talking to reporters after visiting the two residential areas here on Friday, the SUDA chairman said the notices were issued to the owners of the structures within 200 metres from the LMD by the authorities based on the survey conducted by the Central Water Commission Dam Safety Review Panel. The BJP leaders are attempting to blame the State government for the notices issued as per the Dam Safety Act, he alleged, saying, 'It is the BJP-led government at the Centre, which brought the Act containing stringent provisions.' It is a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the pro-poor Congress government, he said, reiterating that the interests of poor and marginalised sections will be protected under the Indiramma Rajyam. Mr. Reddy said the 'evil designs' of those who bent upon 'misleading' people will be exposed.
