ANI EC should respond to Rahul Gandhi with facts, not planted news: AAP's Saurabh Bhardwaj New Delhi: After the Election Commission asked Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to either sign a declaration or apologise for his "absurd" allegations, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bhardwaj said the poll body should respond with facts.
Speaking to ANI, the AAP leader accused the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar of "planting news" based on sources.
"...Gyanesh Kumar ji should be ashamed. Can the Election Commission plant news quoting sources? If he has any self-respect left, then he should take action against those who ran the information about Rahul Gandhi on sources.... Before the Delhi election, we had told EC about voter list manipulation...But what happened? Where was Rahul Gandhi when we had raised this issue before him? At the time, he should have raised his voice. When he did this, he didn't fulfil his responsibility... The Election Commission should respond to him with facts..." Bhardwaj told ANI. This comes after the Election Commission of India (ECI) asked Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to sign the declaration by the Chief Electoral Officers of Maharashtra and Karnataka or apologise for his "absurd" allegations, according to sources.
At a press conference on August 7, Rahul Gandhi claimed that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were "choreographed" by the EC to benefit the BJP, which he said appeared "immune to anti-incumbency."
Citing internal analysis, Gandhi said the Congress expected to win 16 seats in Karnataka but ended up with only nine. He said the Congress investigated seven unexpected losses, zeroing in on Mahadevapura, where he alleged vote theft involving 1,00,250 votes. Presenting Congress's research on voting in the Mahadevapura Assembly in Karnataka, Rahul Gandhi alleged "vote chori" (vote theft) of 1,00,250 votes."Our internal polling told us we would win 16 seats in Karnataka; we won nine. We then focused on seven unexpected losses. We focused on Mahadevapur...All data is 2024 data from the Election Commission; the total votes polled in the Lok Sabha were 6.26 lakhs. The BJP won with 6,58,915, securing a margin of 32,707. But then we look at Mahadevapura, where Congress polls 1,15,586 and BJP polls 2,29,632. Congress wins all Vidhan Sabhas but this one," the Congress leader said. "We found 1,00,250 votes stolen. Stolen in five different ways. Duplicate voters, fake and invalid addresses, and bulk voters in a single address, on a building with 50-60 people living. But when we go there, no record of those people living there. One family living in that house," he said.

Kerala Sports Minister questions authenticity of Argentine Football Association claim
Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman has questioned the authenticity of a statement attributed to Leandro Petersen, Chief Commercial and Marketing Officer of the Argentine Football Association (AFA). Congress slams govt. Meanwhile, Congress leaders raised a barrage of criticism alleging that the Sports Minister put Kerala in shame by breaching its contract with the AFA. 'Messi is missing. The government has the responsibility to reply and clarify,' said Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunny Joseph. Shafi Parambil, MP, accused the State government of deceiving and betraying the people. 'They must provide a transparent explanation, particularly in light of the Argentine Football Association's claims that the government breached the contract,' he said. He demanded accountability saying that the government must justify the public funds spent on the Argentine football team's proposed visit. 'If the breach of contract was not from the Argentine side, then the CPI(M) should foot the bill,' the MP said. He slammed the State government for politicising football. 'They exploited people's love for the sport for political mileage. They made it a political project. And now they are saying it is the sponsor's responsibility,' he said.

Bar council puts 16 lawyers on notice for bench hunting
The privilege committee of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana has put on notice 16 lawyers, including two senior advocates, of the high court over alleged attempts of 'bench hunting' to obtain a favourable order in an alleged case of corruption involving a Gurugram-based realtor and former special CBI court judge in Haryana. (Representational photo) The committee sought responses from senior advocate and Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi and former attorney general Mukul Rohatgi, stating their responses are necessary to 'fairly and comprehensively adjudicate the matter in hand'. The committee, chaired by Raj Kumar Chauhan, was constituted on August 4 by BCPH chairman Rakesh Gupta after members of the bar council pointed out that some advocates of the Punjab and Haryana high court were resorting to bench hunting to secure 'favourable orders' from a particular bench or avoiding to appear before another. Bench hunting or forum shopping refers to petitioners managing to get their cases heard by a particular judge or bench to ensure a favourable order. 'This committee is of the prima facie view that there appears to be foul play on the part of certain advocates who appeared on behalf of Roop Bansal, a real estate builder, and it appears these advocates may have manipulated procedural rules for convenience and gain,' the privilege committee observed after going through the record of the case. 'It is painful and disturbing for the committee to discuss here how tactfully, systematically and in an organised manner, some of the advocates made efforts to hunt the bench. From the records, prima facie it appears that JK Singla, advocate, orchestrated the game plan. But it is highly unbelievable, that this can be done singularly, rather it has been done in an organised manner and there might be some big ingenious minded advocates behind the curtains, which has to be unearthed,' it said. The council is the statutory body with 1.5 lakh members across two states and Chandigarh. It has regulatory control over the Bars and regulates entry into the legal profession and also adjudicates complaints against lawyers. It was established under the Advocates Act, 1961, and is headquartered at Chandigarh. The advocates, who have been served notice through Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, are JK Singla, Sidharth Bhardwaj, Aditya Aggarwal, Gagandeep Singh, Anmol Chandan, Baljeet Beniwal, Harsh Sharma, Sauhard Singh, Rupender Singh, Ankit Yadav, Ashim Singla, Aakash Sharma, Bindu, APS Shergil and two senior advocates Rakesh Nehra and Puneet Bali. All of them have been told to respond by August 16. The petition was filed by real estate firm M3M's director Roop Bansal seeking quashing of an FIR filed by the Haryana anti-corruption bureau in April 2023 against himself and others, including former special CBI court judge Sudhir Parmar. The case stems from an April 2023 case, registered against Sudhir Parmar, Roop Bansal, and others under Sections 7, 8, 11 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120-B of IPC for offences relating to a public servant being bribed, a public servant taking undue advantage without consideration from person concerned in proceedings or business transacted by such public servant, criminal misconduct by a public servant and criminal conspiracy. Sudhir Parmar, who was then special CBI judge, Panchkula, was accused of alleged favouritism towards Bansal and others who were accused in FIRs being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate, pending before his court. Bansal's case was withdrawn by chief justice Sheel Nagu through an administrative decision in May from a judge and assigned it to himself after some 'complaints'. While hearing this petition, the chief justice had orally hinted at possible cases of 'bench hunting' in these proceedings during an open court hearing. However, subsequently, the chief justice also recused from hearing the case. The case is now being heard by the bench of justice Manjari Nehru Kaul. The committee asserted that 'legal ethics are not optional'. 'They are sacred. Upholding the dignity of this noble profession requires moral courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to truth,' it said, adding to ascertain whether these advocates have indulged at any stage in bench hunting, the notices are being issued to these lawyers.

Punjab launches anti-drone systems to tackle cross-border smuggling
Last Updated: Chandigarh, Aug 9 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday launched an anti-drone system, aiming to check the smuggling of weapons and drugs through drones from Pakistan. Mann, along with AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, unveiled three anti-drone systems during an event in the border district of Tarn Taran. The anti-drone system will be called 'Baaz Akh' (Hawk Eye), the chief minister said, adding that this system will be deployed as the second line of defence in the border districts in coordination with the Border Security Force. Mann noted that Punjab will be the first state in the country to have its own anti-drone system deployed at the border areas. Whenever any drone activity is spotted, this system will intercept it and neutralise it, he mentioned. Punjab shares a 553-kilometre border with Pakistan, spanning the districts of Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Pathankot, Fazilka, Ferozepur and Gurdaspur. Mann further said that it is a big step for the Punjab government to check the smuggling of drugs and arms from across the border. 'In the coming days, we will expand the anti-drone system in the state," he added. Kejriwal also underscored the AAP government's efforts against the drug menace, blaming the previous governments for this scourge. He expressed confidence that the Punjab Police is taking strict action against drug smugglers and demolishing their properties through bulldozers as part of the anti-drug drive. 'We know that most drugs come from Pakistan through drones. Today, the Punjab government is implementing the anti-drone system. If any drone enters Punjab from Pakistan, then this system will neutralise it," the former Delhi chief minister said. Three anti-drone systems were launched on Saturday, with plans to deploy six more. If necessary, additional systems will be purchased, Kejriwal reiterated, emphasising the government's commitment to eradicating the drug menace in Punjab.
