Water crisis deepens as alleged saboteurs target Ndwedwe water project [Watch]
The R68-million Umshwathi Bulk Water Scheme, originally scheduled for completion in September, suffered a serious setback after 29 bulk water pipes were allegedly set alight last Friday at the Mthombeni Bus Stop site in Ward 8.
This left more than 20 homes without electricity, as the electrical infrastructure was also damaged in the area.
The infrastructure project intends to supply clean water to Ndwedwe Wards 2, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9
These are rural areas with little to no infrastructure. Residents are at the mercy of unreliable water tankers, while others fetch water from rivers and boreholes.
Through this project, 25 000 people from about 3 000 households have been promised piped water connections to their homes.
iLembe district mayor Thobani Shandu condemned the incident, calling it 'an attack on the dignity and rights of Ndwedwe residents.'
'This was not just vandalism, it was a direct attack on people who have waited years for basic services. We will not be intimidated or derailed. Our commitment to delivering this vital service remains firm,' said Shandu.
An initial site inspection indicated the fire was unlikely to have started naturally. While the results of a formal forensic investigation are pending, authorities suspect deliberate sabotage.
Authorities noted that there had been no previous disputes or community opposition to the project.
A criminal case has been opened at Nsuze Police Station and investigations are underway.
The destruction of the pipes means delays are now inevitable, as materials will need to be reordered and project timelines adjusted. The full cost of the damage is yet to be assessed.
Mayor Shandu appealed to the public for information.
'We urge anyone with knowledge of the perpetrators to come forward. This act has hurt the entire community.'
At the time of publication, no arrests had been made.

Gqeberha protesters throw poo at ward members
Residents of Wells Estate in Gqeberha launched a fiery (and smelly) protest that brought the area to a halt. The unrest began on Monday night when protesters from Rabie Village, angry over long-overdue electricity meter boxes, dumped human waste outside the local clinic and the homes of ward committee members. By Tuesday, roads were barricaded, a bus and a panel van had been torched, and tensions ran high. Residents say they've been waiting since November last year for electricity connections that were promised to them by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. According to Chwayita Adoons, assistant to Gqeberha ward 60 councillor and Mayco member for Human Settlements Thembinkosi Mfana, around 4 000 meter boxes were delivered to the municipality, but very few reached Rabie Village. Of the 985 households in the area, only 40 meters were brought in during a recent installation attempt. 'We wrote a letter to the residents, informing them that the boxes would be delayed,' Adoons told GroundUp . 'We did not have a specific date for delivery.' When the contractor arrived with just 40 boxes people rejected them outright, said a community member who wished to remain anonymous. 'We are all angry, asking one another who was going to benefit from those 40 boxes.' 'People then decided that the boxes should go back, and the contractor should only return when they have boxes for every household.' The poo protesters are also demanding the release of two women who were arrested for public violence during the demonstrations. Metro evicts illegal West businesses
The metro recently removed illegal tenants from a Pretoria West building, following eviction notices served last week. Mayor, dr Nasiphi Moya, says the city is owed over R26-million through its leasing of 12 properties with 35 stands. The businesses, which were operating illegally, were given a notice that expired on July 12, and on July 15, the officials returned to make sure that all occupants had vacated those properties. The mayor said, 'We closed this shop only to find out these people have been operating in the background. So, we have taken their cars, we are towing them, and they can go collect them from the pound. 'We are clearing this warehouse here. This Nigerian guy has been sending us from pillar to post, and we just want to clean this up. These people are so disrespectful. 'We've been giving them notice after notice, and even today, they were hoping we wouldn't be able to see that they were still operating on this property. 'This is the level of lawlessness that we must clean up so you can have your city back.' She says officials were met with resistance from a group of Nigerian men who were operating a scrap yard without valid leases with the city. After they refused to move, TMPD impounded all their vehicles. Moya says they were hoping officials wouldn't be back to reclaim the city property. The warehouse was cleared of over 10 illegally erected shacks, in addition to the businesses operating without permits. Moya says the effort is part of a broader plan to turn Pretoria West into a manufacturing hub for the city. 'When we say that we want to have Pretoria West become a manufacturing hub, this is what we mean. This is just one property, as you can see how big it is. 'It's been used by these people all these years; we have not been collecting leases, we have not been collecting money for the electricity or water, and our people have not been using it. 'We are reclaiming this city for you,' Moya said. MMC for Community Safety, Hannes Coetzee, says these types of operations can be expected across all seven regions. 'People ask what's happening. By-law enforcement at a high level. We're taking our city back. We cannot afford any longer for this lawlessness to continue. 'We need to restore this city, ensure the safety of our residents in all seven regions and restore Tshwane as a city of excellence,' Coetzee said. Malema sets record straight on 'links' to Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has labelled reports that his wife, Mantoa Matlala, is related to murder accused businessman Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala as petty gossip. This, after reports surfaced on social media that Malema and his wife use CAT VIP protection services owned by Matlala, and that the outspoken leader has been silent on the issues concerning the businessman because his wife is related to him. The 49-year-old has been a hot topic after he was named by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as an alleged funder of the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, during an explosive media briefing earlier this month that sent shockwaves across the country. Speaking to journalists in Polokwane at the ward 13 by-election on Wednesday, 16 July, Malema said he has nothing to do with Matlala. 'He must go rot in jail. I don't know him, I don't even care about him. I've never had anything to do with him. So, you take petty gossip and you come and ask me about it? There are serious national issues you must ask me about. I've got nothing to do with what is happening,' he said. Meanwhile, Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala and his wife appeared before the Alexandra Magistrate's Court last Friday on charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering. IOL reported that the Matlalas face charges linked to a high-profile attack on actress and socialite Tebogo Thobejane, who survived a dramatic shooting incident in October 2023 on the N1 highway near Sandton, Johannesburg. Thobejane reportedly was shot in the foot, while a female passenger in the car sustained a serious spinal cord injury. At the weekend after his court appearance, the 49-year-old Pretoria businessman was caught with a cellphone during a surprise search which was led by Correctional Services national commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale at the Kgosi Mampuru C-Max section where he is detained.
