Champaign Co. Crime Stoppers announces 6 arrests, $11k in rewards through tips in May
CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Champaign County Crime Stoppers is highlighting the work of anonymous tipsters during the month of May in helping law enforcement make Champaign County a safer place.
Officials said that during the month, anonymous tips from the public resulted in the following: six arrests, the seizure of four illegally possessed guns and ammunition and the seizure of illegal narcotics and drug packaging materials.
The organization's Board of Directors approved $11,100 in cash rewards, including four $2,500 rewards through the Illegal Gun Bounty Reward Program.

'Once again, the public came through to provide anonymous information that took dangerous felons and illegal weapons and drugs off the streets of Champaign County,' said John Hecker, President of Champaign County Crime Stoppers. 'Crime Stoppers works thanks to the trust and support of our community members, the local media, and law enforcement. Thank you to all those who submitted tips or otherwise help support our nonprofit organization.'

Any tip submitted through these methods is anonymous to law enforcement and eligible for a reward if the tip results in an arrest.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — After a weekend tragedy, many are still coming to terms with the death of three Effingham County teenagers and one 21-year-old. Among the victims was 18-year-old Cruz Watts. Watts died this past weekend in Sigel after their car was hit by a train. Now, one of his friends is opening up about the situation and who Watts was. They shared the same love for the sport and the same gym in Champaign. The Effingham native was just a couple weeks away from his 19th birthday when his life was cut short on Sunday. Ramirez said the loss is as unimaginable as it is tragic. 'It hurts a lot. It hurts. And it's something that will probably hurt for a while,' Ramirez said. A peaceful Sunday morning turned tragic in Effingham. 18-year old Cruz Watts of Effingham — along with three others — died after a car collided with a train in Siegel. 'You develop sort of a relationship with people that you see every single day, and Cruz was someone who is in the gym every single day,' Ramirez added. She was his friend and boxing teammate for three years at Luyando Boxing in Champaign. 'He brought back a sort of spark to the gym — a sort of fight to the gym that we had been missing for a little bit,' Ramirez said. Watts would get to the gym by any means necessary, even if it meant early mornings on the rails. Potomac gives Make-A-Wish teen a taste of the islands 'When he first came to us, he would take the train from Effingham at 4 a.m. to come to our classes that start at 6 a.m., and he would stay until the end of the day 5 p.m. working out, talking to coaches, just just trying to learn,' Ramirez said. She said his legacy to others is forever one of a fighter.. '[He was the] Golden Gloves champion back a couple of years ago, had won multiple bouts since that championship. He was on the road to greatness; we all saw it,' Ramirez said. 'I think his legacy of working hard, always showing up, never letting excuses or anything get in the way. Always training, always trying to be better.' says Ramirez And to those who knew him at Luyando's gym, Watts made a standard to live up to. 'His memory will live in every round that we fight, every punch that we throw. We will be thinking of him,' Ramirez added. Ramirez says there's a service happening for Watts on Thursday in Effingham. Urbana, St. Joe appeared on DHS list of ‘sanctuary jurisdictions'
ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Last week, a list of 'sanctuary jurisdictions' was issued by the Department of Homeland Security. Since then, the list no longer appears on the DHS's website, but jurisdictions that appeared on the list have different opinions about what it could mean for their community. The list, which named cities, counties, and states all throughout the United States, identified areas that are interfering with government deportations, according to the Trump Administration. This came after Executive Order 14287 was signed April 28, calling for a list of states and local jurisdictions that 'obstruct the enforcement of Federal immigration laws.' Illinois bill on governor's desk would require law enforcement to work with federal gun tracing database Per the EO, each jurisdiction would be notified of their 'defiance of Federal immigration law enforcement and any potential violations of Federal criminal law.' The list was also meant to be used by the Office of Management and Budget to identify federal funds in the sanctuary jurisdictions that may be suspended or terminated. The list was published May 29, but as of May 31, a 'Page Not Found' message appeared instead. While the list was only publicly up on the DHS' website for a short time, Illinois cities and counties that were named took notice. Seven cities in Illinois appeared on the list, including Urbana and St. Joseph. WCIA reached out to both Urbana's Mayor, DeShawn Williams, and St. Joseph's Mayor, Jim Page. Williams said Urbana has been a Sanctuary City for nearly 40 years –and they don't plan on changing that. We have been a Sanctuary City since 1986, and we reaffirmed that commitment in 2016 because we believe in human dignity, community safety, and equal protection for everyone who calls Urbana home,' Williams said in a statement sent to WCIA. 'When cities like ours face federal threats or funding pressure for standing by these values, it's not just a matter of policy —it's a matter of principle and moral responsibility.' Effingham County was among the 102 counties named. Joshua Douthit, Board Chairman of Effingham County, shared a statement in response to the DHS placing Effingham County on the list of 'Sanctuary Jurisdictions.' Pritzker says he will veto any budget with 'broad tax increases' 'Effingham County remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and security of our residents. While recent DHS reports have categorized our county as a 'sanctuary jurisdiction,' we want to unequivocally affirm that Effingham County supports legal immigration and fully endorses the federal enforcement efforts of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency,' Douthit said. Douthit added that the county made it clear that they are not a sanctuary county by adopting resolution 24-13, and said they will not spend tax dollars on the 'immigration crisis.' 'Effingham County welcomes those who seek to enter and remain in the United States through legal means and values the contributions of immigrants who comply with the laws governing our nation. We will continue to follow all legal guidelines regarding our ability to cooperate with federal authorities on immigration issues in the interest of public safety, legal integrity, and the well-being of our residents,' Douthit said.
