Reds rally for two in ninth to slay Rockies

Reuters2 days ago
July 12 - Will Benson laced a game-tying RBI triple in the ninth inning and scored the winning run on an error two batters later for the host Cincinnati Reds, who edged the Colorado Rockies 4-3 in the middle game of a three-game series.
Austin Hays lofted a first-inning sacrifice fly before Noelvi Marte homered in the seventh to begin a comeback from a 3-1 deficit for the Reds (49-47), whose win ensured they'd reach the All-Star Break with a winning record while remaining the only team in the majors to not be swept in a series this season.
Cincinnati's 31 straight series without being swept is one shy of the team record to start a season, set by the 1970 team.
Ryan Ritter hit a two-run homer while Yanquiel Fernandez had an RBI double for the Rockies, who were three outs away from clinching just their third series win of the season.
The Rockies have dropped eight of 11 this month to fall to 22-73, which has them on pace to finish with 124 losses, the most in the modern era and three more than last season's Chicago White Sox.
Emilio Pagan (2-2) wriggled out of a first-and-third, none-out jam in the ninth before the Reds needed just 10 pitches to complete their comeback against Victor Vodnik (3-3).
Spencer Steer singled on Vodnik's first pitch before Benson tripled on the right-hander's next offering. Vodnik walked pinch-hitter Jake Fraley, after which Marte hit a hard one-hopper to second baseman Orlando Arcia, who was drawn in for a potential play at the plate.
But Arcia bobbled the ball and didn't throw home as Benson slid in for the winning run.
Elly De La Cruz had two hits and a stolen base for the Reds while Matt McLain, Austin Hays and Gavin Lux all finished with two hits apiece.
Fernandez was 3-for-4.
The Reds' rally saved Brady Singer from suffering a hard-luck loss while costing Bradley Blalock a chance at his first big league win.
Singer gave up the three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out nine over 6 1/3 innings. Blalock allowed one run on six hits and no walks while striking out one over 5 2/3 innings.

Tempers flared during and after the match, culminating in a post-final scuffle involving Chelsea's Joao Pedro and PSG coach Luis Enrique. João Pedro, one of Chelsea's goal scorers, stated that PSG "lost their heads" due to frustration following their unexpected defeat. Luis Enrique claimed he intervened to separate players and prevent the heated situation from escalating further. The match also saw PSG's João Neves sent off for pulling the hair of Chelsea's Marc Cucurella, highlighting the rising tensions.

Deadline nears for Chiefs to sign star right guard Trey Smith to new contract or pay him $23m for next season

The Kansas City Chiefs have until 4pm Tuesday to reach a long-term deal with Pro Bowl right guard Trey Smith or pay him or pay him more than any NFL player at his position for the 2025 season. The Chiefs used their franchise tag on the two-time Super Bowl champion, thereby giving themselves of another year of control over Smith. But by doing so, they agreed to pay him more than other guard in football at $23.4 million. Despite Smith's reputation as one of the best guards in football, and the team's decision to trade All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears, a long-term deal may not be in the cards. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has a base salary of just $1.2 million and a cap hit of $28 million in 2025, but those figures balloon to $45.3 million and $78.2 million, respectively, in 2026. And with so much cap space dedicated to one player, it might be tough for the Chiefs to make a long-term agreement with Smith work, even after Mahomes agreed to renegotiate his contract heading into the 2025 season. The good news for the Chiefs is that Smith did attend minicamp rather than go through a holdout, which has been a strategy adopted by other prominent NFL players. So while he may be eager to get a long-term deal in the books, he doesn't appear willing to jeopardize the team's 2025 season as part of that effort. Smith and the Chiefs are coming off a Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles – something he thinks will make himself and the team stronger. Daily Mail has reached out to Smith's agents for comment. 'I think you need losses in life to learn from it,' Smith told Kay Adams' Up and Adams podcast. 'You need adversity to create endurance. It helps build character from that as well. If you go and win, win, win, you don't have any negativity that comes your way, and you get used to it. You become complacent. 'I think that's the beautiful thing about a loss. It taught us how much it hurts to lose compared to how great it feels to win.' Chiefs training camp opens on July 22, when coach Andy Reid expects wide receiver Rashee Rice (ACL) and first-round draft pick Josh Simmons (torn-patellar tendon) to be fully available. 'I think they're both ready to go,' Reid told reporters in June. The Chiefs struggled at left tackle last season as second-round pick Kingsley Suamataia was benched and second-year pro Wanya Morris struggled. Thuney was forced to move from left guard to left tackle in the postseason with disastrous results. Mike Caliendo and Suamataia are now expected to compete to see who will replace Thuney at left guard this season.

NFL star demands a new contract or trade in shock twist weeks before training camp

San Francisco 49ers star Jauan Jennings has demanded either a new deal or a trade, according to reports. Jennings - who is entering the final year of his current deal with the NFL side - enjoyed a breakout season last year, as he set career-highs in catches, yards and touchdowns. With that in mind, the 28-year-old is keen to sign a new contract with the 49ers and, if that is not a possibility, will seek out a trade instead. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Jennings will still attend their training camp in the coming weeks - even if he is not offered a new deal. Jennings has remained a reliable option since joining the 49ers back in 2020, but took his game to the next level last season. The wider receiver recorded 77 passes for 975 yards and scored six touchdowns - which are all career-highs for the 49ers star. The franchise appear to have put their faith in Jennings after trading Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders in the offseason. Meanwhile, Brandon Aiyuk's return date from a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee remain unclear - which opens up a potential starting place for Jennings. Earlier this month, Samuel was brutally described as being 'two chicken nuggets from tipping the scale' by an NFL legend, during a recent livestream. Samuel, 29, has come under criticism during the offseason after appearing 'bigger' and 'slower' in training, following his move from the San Francisco 49ers . Former Eagles stars Terrell Owens and Brandon Graham discussed Samuel while on a Twitch livestream during a celebrity softball game in Allentown, Pennsylvania . The streamer, known as JankyRondo, mentioned the Commanders' trade for Samuel, to which Graham replied: 'I wouldn't worry about him. He's got to get in shape first. He doesn't look like he's in shape right now.' The 37-year-old grinned as he made the remark before declaring: 'I have to have my fun right now while I can because when you are playing, you can't say anything like that!' Later in the stream, former wide receiver Owens also mentioned that Samuel looks larger than he did last season. 'He is fat,' Owens said. 'He's about two chicken nuggets from tipping the scale. But Deebo is my guy, though. I love Deebo. 'We had a conversation, and he knows what the deal is. I guarantee that by the time the season starts, he'll be in tip-top shape.' Samuel enters the final season of a three-year deal signed with the 49ers, which has been absorbed by the Commanders and re-worked to guarantee him $17 million this year with $3 million in additional incentives.
