Gold subdued as trade optimism weighs, but soft dollar cap losses
Spot gold was down 0.1% at $3,363.91 per ounce, as of 0243 GMT. However, bullion has gained 0.4% so far this week. U.S. gold futures fell 0.2% to $3,365.50.
"Basically we are seeing some profit-taking from short-term bullish speculators due to the fact that we now start to see this trade-deal optimism in the market," OANDA senior market analyst Kelvin Wong said.
"However, the dollar is in a weakening bias and on top of that, we still have the Fed rate cuts pretty much alive at this juncture, which are supporting gold near $3,360 level."
The European Union and the United States now appear to be heading towards a possible trade deal, according to EU diplomats, which would result in a broad 15% tariff on EU goods imported into the U.S., mirroring a framework agreement Washington struck with Japan.

Offering respite to gold, the U.S. dollar index was headed for its worst week in a month, making greenback-priced gold less expensive for other currency holders. [USD/]
Data showed U.S. jobless claims unexpectedly fell last week, signalling a steady labour market despite sluggish hiring making it harder for the unemployed to find work.
The Federal Reserve is also widely expected to leave rates unchanged at its July 29–30 meeting, but markets continue to price in a potential rate cut in September.
Spot silver rose 0.2% at $39.14 per ounce and was on track for a weekly gain, up 2.5% for the week. Platinum eased 0.2% to $1,407.10 and palladium climbed 0.9% to $1,238.73.

‘MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli earn INR 100 crore per year through ads. Sachin Tendulkar in prime…': Ravi Shastri's revelation
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri stunned listeners on the 'Stick to Cricket' podcast—hosted by former England cricketers Michael Vaughan, Alastair Cook, Phil Tufnell, and David Lloyd—when asked about the earnings of top Indian cricketers. Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni are among the highest earning Indian cricketers(REUTERS) According to Shastri, icons such as MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Sachin Tendulkar in their prime easily earned over ₹100 crore per year (~£10 million), primarily through brand endorsements. When Vaughan asked for a conversion, Shastri clarified: "They earn a lot. They earn a lot through endorsements, for sure. You know, and upwards of a hundred crores, I would say ten million. You just calculate," Shastri said. Shastri elaborated that these stars could manage anywhere between 15–20 advertisements in a single day during their peak, though packed cricket schedules often limited such opportunities . The former England captains' reaction was immediate and visceral—multiple exclamations of 'Wow!' reverberated in the studio, capturing the enormity of his disclosure. "Someone like an MS Dhoni or a Virat Kohli or a Sachin Tendulkar in his pomp, they would do over 15-20 ads. And it's per day. There's no time. They could easily do more because of the amount of cricket being played. So, you know, they'll do an ad for a year and give it to us and give a day," Shastri added. Shastri placed his revelations within the larger transformation of cricket's commercial landscape in India, which accelerated in two phases -- first after the 1983 World Cup victory and then the rise of the IPL, leading to booming revenues from TV rights, sponsorships, and advertising deals. He also remarked on the immense pressure that comes with such financial and public scrutiny—a life of 'no privacy' and short public memory for failures. The figures highlight how Indian cricket transcends sport to become a commercial juggernaut, rivalling global athletes like Messi or Ronaldo in earnings potential. While central contracts and match fees offer financial stability, the bulk of top players' wealth comes from endorsements. Despite high demand, players could engage in only a few ad shoots a year—due to packed international and domestic calendars.

India ensures safeguards for sensitive sectors in UK FTA
India and the UK signed a Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) on July 24 after years of meetings and consultations. New Delhi: Only about a fourth of the UK's exports by value will enjoy immediate duty-free access to the Indian market, while most of the sensitive sectors have been protected, the government said on Friday. Briefing the media on Friday, commerce secretary Sunil Barthwal said product-specific rules of origin have been put in place. These stipulate value-addition norms that don't allow transshipment or third-country benefits. India has safeguarded its sensitive sectors - from dairy, cereals and millets, pulses and vegetables, to high-value items like gold, jewellery, lab-grown diamonds and certain essential energy fuels, marine vessels, worn clothing, and critical polymers and their monofilaments, smartphones, and optical fibres are also excluded. For strategically important products, particularly those where domestic capacity is being built under Make in India and production-linked incentive schemes, concessions are being provided over periods of five, seven and 10 years. India and the UK signed a Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) on July 24 after years of meetings and accord with the UK differs from other free trade agreements as it reflects India's transition to a more mature economy, said Barthwal. India will enter areas that hadn't been touched upon in other trade deals as it transitions to developed country status, he said. The accord balances 'sensitivities and strengths,' the official said.'We wanted to remove the tag of tariff king and FTA is a way to do that,' Barthwal said. 'FTAs bring a lot of certainty and predictability to businesses which this UK FTA will ensure. FTAs are give and take and when we build a narrative, we are sensitive that it's not one-sided.' US President Donald Trump had referred to India as a tariff king. Barthwal also referred to negotiations with the US and the European Union.'Detailed talks are happening in the EU FTA. Talks with the US are going on — it will fructify,' he India-UK friendship is based on fair play, equity and mutual benefit, the commerce secretary said. 'We protected our sensitivities and they protected theirs. This FTA has been a balance of sensitivities and strengths. It's a complex and comprehensive deal… Our defensive interests have been taken care of,' he UK may take less than a year to ratify the CETA and India will use that time for building the capacity of its exporters and educating them on how to benefit from the accord. The government is conducting an exercise with states and export promotion councils on how they will be impacted.'We are doing granular studies,' he said. India and the UK have agreed to negotiate mutual recognition agreements (MRAs) to facilitate the movement of professionals such as nurses, accountants and architects to Britain. 'Non-tariff barriers will be eased, and regulatory systems and MRAs would be improved,' Barthwal said. Scotch, cars Barthwal said that Scotch is a GI (geographical indication) product, and there is always a production limit. The duty on Scotch whisky will be reduced to 40% over 10 duty cuts, up to 75% over 10 years, have been offered on other alcoholic beverages, with concessions applicable only above a set minimum import price — $6 for bottled and $5 for bulk whisky. The FTA will help in exports of Indian blended whisky, he added.'Indian malt whisky is blended with imported Scotch. So, when bulk whisky comes, it's like an intermediate product,' the official terms of market access to automobiles, India has committed to a calibrated, phased, and development-oriented quota-based liberalisation strategy. Under this, a total annual quota of up to 37,000 cars has been provided at a reduced tariff, with a graded structure for both quota and concessions have been given to electric vehicles, hybrids and hydrogen-powered cars in the first five years.

Talk about the former president of Harvard. Talk about all of his friends. Talk about the hedge fund guys that were with him all the time. Don't talk about Trump," he said.
