Former Columbus police officer Adam Coy to be sentenced for murder in death of Andre Hill

Yahoo12 hours ago
Nearly nine months after becoming the first Columbus police officer convicted of murder in an on-duty shooting, a judge will sentence Adam Coy.
Franklin County Common Pleas Court Judge Stephen McIntosh, on July 28, will sentence Coy, 48, to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 15 years, the only sentence allowed under Ohio law for the murder charge.
A jury convicted Coy in November of murder, felonious assault and reckless homicide in the Dec. 22, 2020, shooting of 47-year-old Andre Hill.

Members of Hill's family will have the opportunity to speak to the judge before McIntosh hands down the sentence.
Coy shot Hill several times around 1:50 a.m. after responding to a nonemergency call about a vehicle turning on and off repeatedly on Oberlin Drive, on the city's Northwest Side. An investigation determined Hill was not armed.
Coy's attorneys, Mark Collins and Kaitlyn Stephens, argued to the jury that Coy believed a silver key ring in Hill's right hand was a revolver and that Coy was in fear for his life.
McIntosh had initially scheduled Coy for sentencing in November. His attorneys had filed a request to have the jury's verdict set aside because the prosecution team failed to disclose a conversation with a potential expert witness.
McIntosh held several hearings about the request but ultimately ruled in favor of the prosecution, allowing Coy's sentencing to move forward.
Coy has been held in the Franklin County jail since the jury's verdict was announced. His attorneys have said Coy plans to appeal his conviction. He is continuing to undergo cancer treatment, which has delayed his trial several times between 2022 and 2023.
The city of Columbus settled a lawsuit with Hill's family for $10 million, the largest settlement in the city's history.

Delta pilot faces child sex assault charges after post-flight arrest

A Delta Air Lines pilot that was taken into custody after landing at San Francisco International Airport was arrested on child sexual assault charges, authorities said. Rustom Bhagwagar, 34, was booked on five counts of oral copulation with a child under 10 years of age, according to a statement provided to USA TODAY by the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office on July 28. The statement said the arrest stemmed from an ongoing investigation that began with a report of "sex crimes against a child" made in April. County records show that Bhagwagar was arrested on July 26 and is being held in lieu of $5 million bail. It was unclear if Bhagwagar had legal representation, as of Monday afternoon, July 28, and an initial court date was not listed in the county record. Videos shared online and published by travel outlet View from the Wing showed officers walking down the aisle of flight 2809 after its arrival at San Francisco International Airport. The plane landed at approximately 9:35 p.m. the day of the arrest after a delay for heavy fog, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Delta said in a statement that Bhagwagar had been suspended, pending investigation, and that the company is cooperating with law enforcement. "We are appalled by reports of the charges related to the arrest," the airline said. Charges bring clarity to scrutinized arrest The incident drew scrutiny as the nature of the arrest was not immediately clear prior to the statement from the sheriff's office. Hira Zhahir, a Homeland Security Investigations public affairs officer, told USA TODAY July 28 that the department was not the lead agency on the arrest, saying, "HSI was assisting Contra Costa Sherriff's office with an arrest warrant." Footage taken on the plane and published by View from the Wing shows some of the officers wearing plainclothes and badges. It is unclear from the footage if the officers were masked. Shootout in Newark as U.S. marshals try to arrest fugitive in attempted murder case

A fugitive opened fire on U.S. marshals who tried to arrest him at a home in New Jersey on Monday, officials said. The suspect, a man wanted in an attempted murder case, was shot by Newark police during an hours-long standoff after he barricaded himself inside a home and began shooting at officers. Police said officers responded to Irvine Turner Boulevard at around 11 a.m. to assist U.S. marshals in arresting a man wanted for an attempted murder in Hillside. Neighbors said they saw the suspect barricade himself inside the home with a woman and child before the shootout started. "It was a wild shootout. They were shooting crazy," one woman said. "All of this started pulling up immediately, quick, fast," Tommy Easterling said. "The next thing you hear is pow, pow, pow, pow, while they're firing at the house, so, all the officers running up and down the street." U.S. marshals said the suspect fired first at police and officers returned fire. The suspect was shot by police and taken into custody sometime after 3 p.m. "He's no longer a threat to the public at this time," Mayor Ras Baraka said. "By God's grace, nobody was injured, nobody was hurt, nobody was hit." The suspect was hospitalized in unknown condition, U.S. marshals said. The woman and her newborn were taken to the hospital, but were not injured, the woman's stepfather told CBS News New York. "Scary, because we don't know if anything happened to her or the baby," Kenneth Brown said. "They said they didn't get hurt." "He passed the baby out and they put him in the back of a cop car and they got the baby and the mother out the house," another witness said. New Jersey State Police will take over the investigation, Newark police said.

Chicago man charged with spray-painting anti-immigrant, antisemitic graffiti in Little Village

Chicago police charged a man who they said spray-painted anti-immigrant, antisemitic graffiti in Little Village earlier this month. Officers arrested Philip Dominguez, 38, of Chicago, on Saturday afternoon in the 2400 block of South Springfield Avenue. He was charged with five felony counts of hate crime/property, one felony count of criminal damage to property between $500 and $10,000, and five misdemeanor counts of criminal damage less than $500. Police said Dominguez was identified as the suspect who allegedly defaced multiple properties within the Little Village on July 19 and 20, in the 2700 block of West Cermak and the 2500 block of South Central Park. One of the vandalized properties included the Latinos Progresando Community Center, which provides services including immigration legal services and wellness programs. Dominguez is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. The video above is from an earlier report.
