London cancer survivor celebrates birthday by covering patients' parking
The lymphoma cancer survivor knows just how quickly those bills add up after a 20-year journey of hospital visits to London Health Sciences Centre.
That's why she's raised more than $3,700 to pay for 250 parking passes today.
She says the $12 maximum daily fee may not sound like a lot, but it can be a significant expense for those going to the hospital for 30 days of radiation.
A Canadian Cancer Society report in December estimated cancer patients face on average almost $33,000 in out-of-pocket cancer-related costs in their lifetime, including parking fees.
Some provinces are taking this matter into their own hands.
Nova Scotia started covering the cost of hospital parking in May by implementing a ticket validation system for patients, health-care workers and visitors.
In Ontario, an NDP motion to eliminate hospital parking fees for patients, families, and healthcare workers, and cover revenue shortfalls for hospitals, was voted down in June.
Almonte General Hospital southwest of Ottawa is capping parking costs at a daily fee of $5 beginning this month.

Toronto surgeon dies while competing in triathlon in Barrie

In a statement released by the University of Toronto, Carol Swallow, the chair of the department of surgery at the post-secondary institution, confirmed that Dr. Sean Cleary, the Langer chair of the division of general surgery, died while taking part in a triathlon north of Toronto on Sunday. 'Sean has touched the lives of many of us – as a clinical colleague, a teacher, a mentor, a supervisor, a confidential advisor, and a friend,' Swallow's statement read. She described the late doctor as a 'reliable, wise, honest, insightful, and compassionate' leader who had a 'perpetually wry sense of humour.' 'I am struggling to accept what has happened,' the statement continued. 'I suspect many of you are feeling a similar sense of shock and denial at this point, and that the profound dimensions of this loss will gradually become apparent over the coming days and weeks.' Barrie police told CP24 Thursday that a 52-year-old man who was taking part in the event was removed from the waters of Kempenfelt Bay shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Sunday after 'going into medical distress.' 'Although lifesaving efforts were initiated, he was pronounced deceased at a local hospital,' police said in an email. A 'shared sense of loss' Swallow said Cleary dedicated much of his professional career to the division of general surgery and the department of surgery at U of T. 'He trained here as a general surgery resident, and then as an HPB (hepatopancreatobiliary) surgical fellow. He graduated from the University of Toronto Surgical Scientist Training Program with an MSc degree in cancer genetics,' Swallow's statement read. 'Straight out of fellowship, Sean was recruited to the University of Toronto Department of Surgery as an Assistant Professor and joined the surgical staff at University Health Network with an appointment as an HPB surgical oncologist at Princess Margaret.' She noted that he developed his own research program in cancer epidemiology and was quickly promoted to associate professor at the university. After leaving for a position at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, New York in 2016, Cleary returned to Toronto in 2023 to serve as the Bernard and Ryna Langer Chair of the Division of General Surgery at the University of Toronto. 'I wish Sean had had more time to fully deliver on this vision but recognize that much has already been achieved,' Swallow's statement read. She noted that resources are being offered to faculty and learners who are grieving the loss. 'As a surgical family, we express our shared sense of loss and our sincere condolences to Sean's own family,' the statement continued. 'We have all lost a fine human being whose like we will not see again.'

CVS Advances Digital Efforts to Simplify Healthcare Experience
This year, CVS Health CVS has committed to investing $20 billion in technology over the next decade to address the widely discussed interoperability challenge in the U.S. healthcare system. The concept hinges on the idea that all different parts of the system interact with each other, ideally through a single patient record, regardless of company brand. CVS plans to build an open platform that gives seamless access to payers, providers, pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), pharmacies and digital health tools. The company has now joined more than 60 healthcare and technology companies — including Amazon, Anthropic, Apple, Google and OpenAI — supporting the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ('CMS') Health Tech Ecosystem initiative, which was announced at a White House event on July 30. Tony Ambrozie, CVS Health's senior vice president, called it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform health care. He stated that the way the private sector and government collaborate on this will be vital to creating a healthcare system that truly serves patients. Last month, Aetna introduced its new digital offering called Aetna Care Paths, available to members through the Aetna Health app. This technology makes it easier for members by giving clear information about procedures and benefits that may be encountered and tailored care recommendations — all in one place. Aetna Care Paths marks a shift from the typical transactional approach to health care most insurance companies take to a more journey-based and holistic style of care. Other new Aetna technology upgrades include personalized cost tracking tools that let members see their in-network and out-of-network spending, monitor deductibles and easily access the related claims to better manage expenses. There is also a solution that more accurately identifies providers accepting new patients, rather than only relying on provider updates. Another AI solution matches digitally submitted claims with existing ones, helping members understand what they may owe.
