
Why truck stop cafés trump motorway service stations
For me, it was the full-to-the-brim child's nappy that someone had left on a chair in the revolting 'sit down café' at a services near Preston that made me decide that I would never set foot in a Welcome Break, Moto or Roadchef ever again. I'm lucky; I have a bladder that can tolerate journeys of four or five hours by car. My fiancée, however, is not equipped with such sturdiness. So, over the past few years, we've been seeking out alternative forms of respite from the road.
Truck stops are, I always assumed, not the kind of establishment in which a journalist and an intensive care nurse on their holidays would be welcome. Perhaps like many people not involved in the heavy transportation industry, I assumed these were malodorous, members-only places where entry would strictly be restricted to men of a certain age who were covered in axle grease and wearing grimy hi-vis jackets with trousers that comfortably showed at least two-thirds of their backside at any given time. My pompous snobbery was duly kicked into touch when we stumbled across Skelmersdale truck stop café.
The first thing to tell you about truck stops is that they are not hard to find, presuming you have a smartphone. Nearly always independently owned and typically situated in an industrial estate around ten minutes' drive from the motorway itself, the locations are frequently aesthetically unedifying. So far, so absolutely predictable, you might say.
But what surprised us was the welcome that a couple in a 2014 Ford Focus attracted when pulling into these places. Firstly, there is always parking for cars, as well as articulated lorries. And secondly, there's absolutely no grumpy official telling you that the place is for Eddie Stobart employees only.
Inside the café itself; well, the décor is not going to be to the tastes of Philippe Starck. But, then again, neither would the interior of a Welcome Break. Be in no doubt, truck stop cafés are greasy spoons of the type that you seldom see on high streets any more. There will be Formica. There will be a TV showing (silently) football highlights from Bosnia or Colombia. There will be several red-top newspapers discarded across the tables.
But there will also be an invariably cheerful woman ready to take your order at the counter for a made-from-scratch cooked breakfast of outstanding quality, and at a price that wouldn't get you a Rustlers microwave burger at a petrol station. Last summer, my Skelmersdale trucker breakfast of two bacon rashers, two sausages, fried egg, black pudding, beans, mushrooms and two slices of toast cost £4. I didn't need to eat again for 12 hours.
The typical truck stop café (and there are dozens and dozens of them around the UK) doesn't limit itself to fry-ups, either. Since then I've eaten cottage pies, Cajun wraps, chicken curry, asparagus soup and carrot cake. You'll seldom find a main course that costs more than a fiver and the tea usually comes in mugs that could comfortably hold a tenner's worth of 1p pieces.
It's worth remembering the first table-service restaurant in the world was set up to cater for road users. Boulanger's, located near the present day Rue de Louvre in Paris, opened in 1765 to offer 'restoratives' to travellers, including meat broths and sheep's foot in white sauce. The truck stops of Britain today are doing little more than replicating the ethos of Boulanger's. The food isn't intended for, or marketed toward, the majority of the general public. It's simple, homemade, exceptionally keenly priced, and best enjoyed while engaging in low-level conversation with your partner about the road ahead and the likelihood of getting good reception for Radio 4 on the car radio once north of Peebles.
The only worry I have about truck stops is that they're seldom very busy. No matter how many trucks there are in the vast parking areas, I've never been to a truck stop café that is anything more than 10 per cent full. It's gratifying after myriad experiences waiting in the festival-length queues for the toilets at a Moto. But I suspect that many of these homespun operations would actually welcome a few more diners who aren't behind the wheel of a ten-ton behemoth.
Perhaps the truckers are only here to sleep in their bunk behind the wheel or simply use the shower facilities. But what's become clear to me since I began using truck stops is that it's not necessary to complain about the appalling state of our 'mainstream' service stations when there are so many superior alternatives which we car drivers simply don't use. I no longer gripe about the state of a typical Welcome Break. I just make for the Red Lion truck stop near Northampton (which even sells its own range of sweaters, T-shirts and other merchandise), the Bury St Edmunds lorry park (which is unusually well signposted) or the Lesmahagow truck stop in Lanarkshire, which offers superb views of the rolling hills of the Clyde Valley.
Of course, you could just pack your own sandwiches, 'hold it in' and not stop at all on a long drive. But there's something about a cooked breakfast on the road that brings out the Jack Kerouac spirit in me. OK, I'm not jumping off goods trains in Colorado in the dead of night while wired on Benzedrine. But I am hungry. And a litre of tea and some fried bread in a truck stop café beautifully evokes the original itinerant elan of longer haul road trips.
Truck stops are the places where the loners, the drifters, the riders of the night congregate for warmth and sustenance. And, as I'm now certain, they're eating better than anyone joining the queue at a motorway Costa.

Blair Drummond Safari Park bosses brand route near attraction 'not fit for purpose' after crashes
Campaigners are calling for action to be taken to make the A84 at Blair Drummond Safari Park safer following three road crashes there in a week. Renewed calls have been made for safety measures to be introduced on a section of the A84 near Blair Drummond Safari Park after three accidents in just a week. Two collisions happened at the entrance to the safari park – at the A84's junction with Sommer's Lane – with a third incident at the Blair Drummond Smiddy Farm Shop junction, where the A84 meets the A873. This has led to fresh calls for more traffic calming measures from campaigners, with safari park management backing this call saying the road is 'no longer fit for purpose'. The local community council fears it will 'take a death on the road before anything changes'. The first crash saw the A84 closed at around 1.30pm on Tuesday, July 29. Police received reports of a two-vehicle crash and four people were treated at the scene. Just four days later, another incident occurred at the same location. A driver was arrested and charged following a three-vehicle collision near the entrance of the safari park at around 3.50pm on Saturday, August 2. The crash involved a Mercedes Vito Tourer, a black Seat Leon and Ford Focus Zetec. A 40-year-old woman, who was a passenger within the Mercedes vehicle, was taken to hospital for treatment and a 38-year-old woman and a 46-year-old male, both passengers within the Seat Leon, were also taken to hospital. The occupants of the Ford Focus were uninjured. A 37-year-old man was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with road traffic offences. The third incident occurred on the A84 at the Blair Drummond Smiddy Farm Shop junction on Wednesday after noon. Blair Drummond Safari Park says that it has 'repeatedly raised concerns' with Transport Scotland about the safety of the A84 outside its entrance, but their requests for action have 'consistently been denied'. Park manager Gavin Hughes told the Stirling Observer his staff have stepped in to help when there are crashes outside the visitor attraction. He said: 'Over the years, we have asked for a range of safety measures to be considered – including a reduced speed limit, a slip road, a roundabout, and a pedestrian crossing to help people safely cross from the other side. 'Unfortunately, none of these proposals have been taken forward. 'This is a fast-moving road with poor visibility at our junction. It's used by significant numbers of visitors travelling to both Blair Drummond Safari Park and Briarlands Farm, and it has become busier year-on-year. The A84 is also one of the key routes taken by tourists heading to the north of Scotland, and interest in visiting the Highlands has increased dramatically in recent years. 'On top of that, the local area has seen the arrival of several new businesses, further increasing traffic and pressure. Quite simply, the road is no longer fit for purpose in its current form, and we believe it urgently needs to be re-evaluated. 'Accidents on this stretch occur far too frequently. Just last week, members of our team were first on the scene at a collision, stepping in to make sure everyone was safe, move vehicles off the road, and direct traffic until emergency services arrived. 'We do not have any jurisdiction over the road, which is frustrating both for us and for our customers, many of whom have raised concerns. We believe more must be done to improve safety in this area, and we will continue to push for action on this increasingly busy stretch of road.' Transport Scotland published a safety study on the stretch in March 2019 which said a 'preferred option' to calm traffic would have been the creation of a roundabout there, but said at the time that it was 'not a priority'. A new roundabout to include the A84 and A873 – at the junction of the Blair Drummond Smiddy Farm Shop - was estimated to cost approximately £3.5 million at the time. A Transport Scotland spokesperson this week said the junction outside the safari park main entrance 'has not been identified for safety focused investment based on the collision history over the last three years'. They added: 'But we will discuss the details of the most recent collisions with Police Scotland to understand the circumstances behind them.' Thornhill and Blairdrummond Community Council says that the issue has been a hot topic on their agenda for many years. A spokesperson said: 'The community council have long advocated for a traffic management solution for both the Safari Park and Smiddy junctions. It will take a death on the road before anything changes at this rate.' Trossachs and Teith ward councillor, Martin Earl, said: 'There's a very good reason why councillors, residents and MSPs have been raising this location with Transport Scotland for so long – it's dangerous and will remain so until money is spent and changes are made. 'This must surely now be accepted by them.' Stirling's SNP MSP Evelyn Tweed has written to Transport Scotland and the Transport Secretary, Fiona Hyslop, over the matter, calling for action to improve road safety. She said: 'I have reiterated the desire for a roundabout to be put in place at the junction into the safari park and improvements to be made at the Smiddy and Gargunnock junctions. I'm awaiting a response. I hope that all those who have been involved in these incidents make a full recovery.' Mid-Scotland & Fife Conservative MSP and shadow Minister for Local Government and Public Finance, Alexander Stewart said: 'For a great many year years, local residents have been extremely concerned at the sheer level of accidents, many of them serious, and near-misses at this junction of Sommer's Lane at the entrance to Blair Drummond Safari Park.' He added: 'Many years ago, my Scottish Conservative colleagues were heavily involved in this issue and convinced Transport Scotland to carry out a safety survey of the junction, however whilst the Scottish Government's transport agency conceded that a roundabout at the junction was its 'preferred option', bafflingly they ruled that it wasn't priority 'at this time' and it did not, in their opinion, represent value for money. 'It's easy to speculate that were a roundabout now in place here, maybe these awful accidents may never have happened, however what is absolutely crystal clear now, is that something decisive must be done.' Mr Stewart 'strenuously urged' Transport Scotland to undertake 'urgent action to address this problem' and vowed to write to Transport Scotland to request they implement the report's recommendations. Stirling and Strathallan Labour MP Chris Kane echoed the calls for urgent action, saying: 'This has been a long-standing issue that has been continuously ignored. 'This area has seen far too many accidents, and recent events only confirm that the situation is getting worse. It is clear the current layout is no longer fit for purpose.' Mr Kane has asked Transport Scotland to confirm what steps are being taken to improve safety at these junctions and has requested updated accident statistics to better understand the scale of the problem. 'I will continue pressing this issue until meaningful action is taken. These are preventable risks, and it's time we put public safety first', he added.

A recent early viewing of an updated model provoked an interesting chat about the future of different bodystyles. We all know that SUVs have come to dominate the car market recently, with drivers loving their higher driving positions, butch looks – which hint at an active lifestyle that may, or may not, exist – and the perceived safety they offer. The move to crossovers and SUVs has hammered sales of traditional mid-sized five-door cars, to the point where the curtain is coming down later this year on the once-dominant Ford Focus. The product boss I was chatting to mused that, far from hatchback cars being in terminal decline, their lower-slung profile and more compact footprint could be key to their resurgence in the coming years. 'Younger people like them because they see SUVs as the cars of their parents, so it could come full circle,' she told me. In effect, the humble hatch could become cool again, because young drivers want something different to what their uncool parents have! Which is ironic when SUVs killed off family MPVs such as the Ford C-MAX, Citroen C4 Picasso et al by offering a trendier and less boxy alternative that still provided space and practicality. Hatchbacks are more efficient too, and their smaller bodies use less material to produce, which could also be important considerations for the future's potentially more eco-conscious buyer. Maybe they could morph into a new type of car that's slightly taller than before – as we move to electric cars, the batteries have to be housed somewhere – but still lower and less of a family wagon than an SUV. So maybe the hatchback sector is set for a major turnaround, and in a tale as old as time, a revival will be built on the next generation making sure they don't turn into their parents!
