In this edition of Mind Over Money , we spotlight Praveen Kutty , Managing Director and CEO of DCB Bank , whose leadership philosophy draws deeply from the soccer field.A passionate footballer off the clock, Kutty brings the same energy , strategic thinking, and team-first mindset into the boardroom. From understanding individual strengths to making quick decisions under pressure, he shares how the beautiful game continues to influence his approach to building agile teams, fostering ownership, and staying mentally sharp in a high-stakes corporate environment. Edited Excerpts –Absolutely. Soccer has shaped the way I think about teamwork, handling pressure, and strategic execution.Whether it's playing at gymkhanas, local clubs, or simply catching my favourite matches, the game keeps my passion alive and helps me stay mentally sharp.Much like in soccer, where every pass and movement is both calculated and fluid, leadership demands quick thinking and adaptability.Staying active through sport has taught me to maintain focus, manage stress, and make decisions on the go. It's one way I ensure I stay mentally fit for the game, both on the field and in the boardroom.Definitely. A soccer team consists of 11 players, including a goalkeeper, all aligned to one goal: winning. Similarly, in a bank, various departments and individuals must work with a shared purpose.Everyone has different strengths—some are defenders, some are forwards. Identifying these roles and placing people in the right positions is the responsibility of a good leader.A well-planned strategy, open group discussions, and clearly defined roles ensure the team moves in sync. And just like in soccer, where it's not only about the star striker but also the silent midfielder setting up the goal, success in business is driven by collective effort, not just individual brilliance.I also believe in rotating responsibilities occasionally, much like a coach might tweak formations or switch player roles to suit the strategy. It keeps the team agile, helps individuals grow, and gives them a deeper understanding of how the whole system works.Ownership doesn't come from micromanaging; it grows from trust, clarity, and empowerment. At DCB Bank, we focus on giving individuals the freedom to operate within well-defined goals. Much like in a soccer match, you don't tell a player every move—they train, prepare, and then make judgment calls during the game.Structurally, we ensure teams have accountability frameworks in place, but culturally, we encourage risk-taking, learning from mistakes, and celebrating initiative. When employees feel their contribution matters to the larger goal, they step up and own it.Soccer is a team sport—you may have a hat-trick hero, but it's the entire squad that made it happen. At DCB Bank, we make it a point to acknowledge team wins. From project launches to quarterly milestones, we focus on appreciating every contributor, visible or behind the scenes.A strong team culture is about synergy. It's about passing the ball, creating space for others, and defending when needed. We drive this mindset by encouraging cross-functional collaboration and removing silos. Recognition is always shared, because no goal is scored alone.A great team player is alert, agile, and always has an eye on the bigger picture. They anticipate what's coming next and act accordingly, just like a midfielder reading the game before making a pass.Resilience is another key quality. In both soccer and business, you'll face injuries, bad calls, or off days. But the will to keep playing—to keep showing up—is what separates good from great.Consistency beats talent when talent doesn't show up. Someone born with skills may lose their edge without practice, while a consistent player with the right mindset can go farther. It's the same in business—you may not start with all the advantages, but discipline and perseverance take you ahead.Absolutely. Sports are a great outlet—they help you reset, recharge, and refocus.Soccer, in particular, teaches you to stay calm under pressure.Whether it's the last five minutes of a tight match or the final push to close a business deal, that muscle memory kicks in. You learn to read the field, pace your energy, and strike at the right moment. Also, staying physically active helps me make healthier choices. When the mind and body are aligned, you are better equipped to handle setbacks.Every match has its highs and lows, and so does business. What matters is staying in the game and playing until the last whistle.

The Barbell Advantage: Positioning for stability and opportunity in Indian fixed income

Markets place the odds of a 25 basis point cut at nearly certain levels, with the target fed funds range expected to move from 4.25–4.50% down to 4.00–4.25%.With signs of slowing labour markets, muted inflation pressures, and the potential for up to three cuts before the end of the year, this marks a clear pivot from the Fed's long pause since December US yields have moved materially, Indian bond yields have tended to react, largely via sentiment and capital easing cycles in the US have often led to benign moves in Indian yields, though the scale and speed vary depending on domestic now, the global shift towards easing, if sustained, can encourage flows into emerging market debt such as India's — a factor that can help anchor local yields, especially in the absence of major fiscal Indian bonds have held up in the face of global volatility. The RBI has already front-loaded policy easing since February, cutting the repo rate by a cumulative 100 basis points to 5.50%.This was complemented by large liquidity support, with a further 100 basis point CRR cut to be phased in from September to November, adding approximately INR2.5 lakh crore of liquidity into the banking has been running below the 4% target, with CPI in July printing at just 1.55%, though the RBI's projections point towards a gradual climb, crossing 4% in early forecasts remain steady at 6.5% for FY26, supported by rural consumption recovery and government-led capital expenditure As many market participants have also observed, the local yield curve has steepened in recent months, especially between the 10-year and 15-year maturities, as limited 10-year supply and cautious sentiment have pushed intermediate yields bonds have been relatively more stable. This steepening has occurred even though the underlying global and domestic macro backdrop arguably favours a constructive duration fixed income investors, the next 12–18 months seem to offer opportunities at both ends of the maturity spectrum. In the near term, credit spreads in high quality corporate bonds remain stable and 1–5 year AAA-rated corporate bonds with short-duration accrual strategies can deliver steady income while benefiting from the downward drift in short-term rates as CRR cuts inject part of the portfolio plays defence while locking in yields that may compress other leg of positioning is to maintain core exposure to long-duration government bonds , particularly in the 14–15-year segment and selectively at the very long steepening at the longer end seems to be overdone relative to fundamentals, and a normalisation of sentiment or moderation in supply could see spreads Fed easing and global growth softness push US and Indian yields lower, this part of the book stands to benefit from capital this barbell approach — accrual-oriented short duration plus strategic long duration — aligns with an outlook where local rates are near the end of their easing cycle but global conditions remain supportive for RBI may hold through October and consider one final 25 basis point cut in December, but even without it, abundant liquidity and anchored inflation expectations should keep yields remain — from renewed inflation pressures, higher long-bond supply, or global shocks — but the balance of probabilities favours a stable to stronger bond market therefore, can use the current steepness in parts of the curve to add duration selectively while earning carry from shorter corporate a patient strategy for a cycle that appears closer to its bottom in India yet is still in its early stages globally.(The author is Managing Director and Head of Investment Strategy & Solutions, Waterfield Advisors.)(Disclaimer: Recommendations, suggestions, views, and opinions given by experts are their own. The crown jewel of the Tata Group has shed nearly ₹5.66 lakh crore in market value, tumbling 34% from its peak of ₹4,585.90, making 2025 its worst year since that fateful 55% crash 17 years ago. The stock is down 26% in 2025 alone, slashing its market capitalization to ₹10.93 lakh crore from a peak of ₹16.59 lakh rout comes amid a weak demand outlook, the disruptive impact of generative AI and a mixed Q1 scorecard, all of which have triggered a foreign investor exodus. FIIs, who once considered Indian IT their favorite trade, have slashed holdings in TCS from 12.35% in June 2024 to 11.48% in June 2025. Their broader selling has inflicted even deeper pain across the sector with the Nifty IT index plunging 25% so far this year, making it the worst-performing pocket of the market. Out of ₹95,600 crore pulled by FIIs from India in 2025 through July, more than half came from IT stocks funds, however, have played contrarian. Domestic institutions raised their TCS stake from 4.25% to 5.13% in one year and July data showed ₹400 crore of fresh MF meanwhile, have been reset sharply. TCS's trailing PE has halved from 41x to 20x with five-year profit CAGR at 8.5% and stock CAGR at 6%. Long-term data show IT has compounded 12.5% annually over two decades yet underperformed the Nifty in the past three to five funds see opportunity in the rubble. 'With IT's weight in the Nifty near decade lows and leading firms still generating ROICs above 40%, the sector may offer relative outperformance if valuations fall further,' DSP Mutual Fund said, calling IT, banks and other large caps a defensive bucket to ride out Read | FII selling crosses Rs 50,000 crore in IT stocks in 2025. Is tech dead money or just misunderstood? BNP Paribas pointed to dividends as an anchor. TCS's yield is now 3.7% versus its five-year average of 2.9% with the last five-year peak at 3.6%, the brokerage firm said, adding that margin expansion should resume post-FY26 once the BSNL deal ramps down. BNP has an Outperform rating with a ₹4,400 target price arguing that 'resilient fundamentals and attractive valuation make TCS our top pick in the current uncertain macroeconomic environment.'Still, the headlines are not all comforting. TCS's decision to cut 2% of its workforce has drawn scrutiny. 'TCS's move to cut staff may lead to execution slippages in the near term and higher attrition in the longer run. It reflects a weak demand environment,' Jefferies warned, adding that firms unable to capture AI-led productivity gains may have to resort to layoffs. The brokerage remains selective on IT, preferring Infosys and HCL Tech, which it sees as a stronger alternative to TCS.
