Sarawak to build more traffic gardens under 13th Malaysia Plan
"The ministry plans to increase the number of traffic gardens throughout Sarawak under the 13MP so that every part of Sarawak has at least one," revealed Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin on Sunday (Aug 3).
Speaking at the Sarawak Traffic Games Sibu 2025, the Transport Minister said this aligns with the ministry's commitment to expanding road safety education to more students and rural communities, ensuring no one is left behind in shaping prudent road users.
"We are committed to reducing the number of road accidents in Sarawak. We want every road user to go to work and return safely. We want every student to go to school and return safely. We want all users to use the road safely. That is very important," said Lee, who is also the Sarawak Road Safety Council chairman.
Lee said traffic games have had a positive impact, turning children into road safety ambassadors.
"There are parents who told me that after their children participated in the traffic competition, they remind them to put on seat belts before driving and to stop at red lights," he added.
The Shell Traffic Games were introduced in the state in 1963, discontinued in 2015, but rebranded and revived in 2024 as the Sarawak Traffic Games under the ministry's full implementation.
It officially kicked off in November 2024 in Miri and continued in all six existing locations, including Sarikei in April, Kuching in June, and on Sunday in Sibu, with future editions set for Sri Aman and Bintulu this year.
"We believe road safety awareness must be instilled from a young age. Children are not only future drivers but also today's road users—as cyclists, pedestrians, and passengers. Through a fun and meaningful approach, we can instill responsibility, discipline, and civic responsibility from an early age," he said.

(Wikipedia pic) PUTRAJAYA : Electric garbage trucks will be deployed at major tourist destinations in Kuala Lumpur such as Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Alor to modernise public cleansing and cut carbon emissions, says housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming. Nga said the initiative by the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation was part of a broader reform under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), aimed at achieving zero carbon emissions by 2035. The initiative will include midnight cleaning shifts to avoid disrupting traffic, as well as weather-friendly operations and 'deep cleansing' with water jets for dust-free streets. 'We will start with tourist destinations, as next year is Visit Malaysia 2026. The initial focus will be on strategic locations in the capital such as Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Alor, and other key areas,' Nga said after launching the ministry's Semarak Jiwa Merdeka campaign here today. Nga said the midnight cleaning programme, to be piloted in high-traffic tourist areas in preparation for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, had proven successful in several developed cities in China such as Shanghai and Shenzhen. On July 31, he said in Parliament that the 13MP would introduce major changes to the national cleaning system, including the use of electric vehicles for night cleaning and dust-free road initiatives.

Hunan Yuneng chooses Malaysia for lithium battery production hub
SEREMBAN: Chinese battery manufacturer Hunan Yuneng New Energy Battery Material Co Ltd has selected Malaysia for its first Southeast Asian production facility. The plant will be located at SPD Tech Valley in Senawang, focusing on lithium battery cathode materials. This marks Hunan Yuneng's debut project in Malaysia, expected to generate more than 200 jobs. Malaysian Investment Development Authority CEO Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid highlighted the importance of the new facility. He said the memorandum of understanding signed with Invest Negeri Sembilan and SPD Tech Valley aligns with Malaysia's industrial transformation plans. 'This MOU supports our sustainability and advanced technology goals under the 13th Malaysia Plan and New Industrial Master Plan 2030,' he said. MIDA pledged full support for the project through facilitation services and ecosystem development. The agreement was signed by Invest Negeri Sembilan COO Datuk Najmuddin Sharif Sarimon, Hunan Yuneng Deputy CEO Liang Kai, and SPD Tech Valley CEO Ten Wee Seong. The signing was witnessed by Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun. Sikh Shamsul noted that Hunan Yuneng's expertise will strengthen Malaysia's role in the global clean energy supply chain. Liang Kai said Malaysia has attracted a growing number of Chinese firms in the new energy battery sector. He added that the Malaysian facility will serve as a strategic base for expansion across Southeast Asia.
