MANNINGTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — A Marion County man caught the largest tiger trout ever recorded in West Virginia last month.
Grant Town resident Robert Riggs made the catch on March 28 at Mannington Lake, formerly called Little Dents Run Lake, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) announced Tuesday. The tiger trout, which weighed 12.55 and measured 27.6 inches, broke the previous West Virginia state record for weight. However, a 28.7-inch trout caught in Krodel Lake in 2011 maintains the record for length.
Riggs made the catch using a casting spoon and 6-pound test line, according to the WVDNR.
Here's when sites in the Mon National Forest open this spring
'This incredible catch highlights the outstanding fishing opportunities that West Virginia has to offer,' WVDNR Director Brett McMillion said in the press release. 'We encourage anglers to get outside, cast a line and experience the thrill of fishing in our state's waters this spring. You never know when you might reel in a record-breaker.'
Right now, West Virginia is in Gold Rush season, a two-week period when lakes and streams across the state are stocked with golden trout, 100 of which are tagged for a chance to win a prize.

2025 USA Diving American Cup held at Mylan Park

MORGANTOWN, (WBOY) — Thirty-nine competitors across six countries came to Morgantown on Thursday to kick off the 2025 USA Diving American Cup at Mylan Park, where the best divers compete for spots in other international meets later in the year. Among the competitors are 16 Americans, eight female and eight male, who represent some of the best divers in the United States. The 2025 American Cup will have four days of competitions, and officially kicked off Thursday. The events on Thursday and Friday are preliminary competitions, where the athletes aim to make the finals, which will be held on Saturday and Sunday. During the finals, the top 12 competitors will face off for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place positions, and from there, they'll look to move on to some other international competitions or national competitions for their respective home countries. According to National Events Manager Michael Retcher, the Morgantown Aquatic Center has been home to many USA Diving national meets over the past few years, adding that the hospitality they've experienced there has been incredible. 'This is a world-class facility, truly, that is well-known amongst our athletes and the diving community,' he said. Power Up 2025 Conference looks to help small businesses in Morgantown Retcher also said that Visit Mountaineer Country and Peak Health Aquatic Center have been great partners with USA Diving, which is why the organization keeps coming back to hold competitions in Morgantown. 'The people, the experience here that we've had at our national-level events is awesome,' he said. 'Now we're showing the world on the international stage how awesome Morgantown, West Virginia, is and what a great job they do.' According to Retcher, international meets like this one can provide the first opportunity, and at other times additional opportunities, to get experience on the international stage. He also said that although there are U.S. athletes competing at this event, competitors in this international cup are trying to get experience to compete in the World Aquatics Championships and hopefully secure a spot in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. USA Diving wants to pack the stands throughout the duration of the 2025 USA Diving American Cup, and they encourage people in the Greater Morgantown Area to stop by. 'You don't have to know a thing about diving, you don't have to have ever seen diving before,' Retcher added. 'But it is so much fun to be here—to be up close and personal watching these divers, and it's just really an electric event.' Tickets for the event can be purchased online via Mylan Park's website. There, you can find a full event schedule for the coming days and also find information about volunteer opportunities. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Fairmont cuts the ribbon on new pickleball courts

FAIRMONT, (WBOY) — Marion County residents now have a new way to have fun after the City of Fairmont cut the ribbon Friday for its new pickleball court at Windmill Park. The courts were previously used as basketball courts, which the city converted for $120,000. City officials said they're trying to provide opportunities to keep the community active and get in on the latest sports trends, all while keeping people in Fairmont. Look out for 'Skittles of the bird world' in West Virginia this summer According to 2024 was the fourth year in a row that pickleball was the fastest-growing sport in America. After the ribbon-cutting for the Pickleball Courts, Fairmont Mayor Anne Bolyard tried them out. If you want to get a game in yourself, the gate will be open. The Pickleball Courts are a part of a broader city effort to invest in parks and recreation. City officials said that by the end of the fiscal year, the city will have made $3 million worth of upgrades to its municipal park facilities. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 2nd Annual Appalachian Fly Fishing Festival returns to Thomas

THOMAS, (WBOY) — The second annual Appalachian Fly Fishing Festival was held in Thomas over the weekend, where fly fishing enthusiasts could come and talk to other fishermen, check out gear, look at some crafts, and of course fly fish. Event organizer Tyler Waldo said that the major reason they have the festival is to pass on fly fishing to the next generation and 'bringing out the community that is fly fishing from fly shops, fly casters, to the conservation agencies that make West Virginia special as it is for the resources that we have.' How your fishing license helps conservation efforts Waldo explained that people can get a lot out of fly fishing, such as learning patience and a hobby that you can enjoy throughout your life. 12 News talked to one expert fly fisher, Christa Clasgens, who was at the festival to promote her guide business, about what she gets out of fly fishing. 'It's very therapeutic in that you get down to the motion of things and your focus on the fish,' Clasgens said. 'I almost feel like I have a lot going on and my head constantly and when I go flying fishing it calms everything down. Everything goes quiet and I can just focus on the water and the fish.' Waldo said that they plan on having the event again next year, and that it'll be May 30 and May 31. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
