Ludhiana: Consumer panel directs car dealer to pay ₹1 lakh
The district consumer disputes redressal commission has ordered a city-based car dealership to pay ₹1 lakh compensation to a woman for selling her a car that had been billed months before its delivery, terming it an unfair trade practice. The order was passed by commission president Sanjeev Batra and member Monika Bhagat. (HT Photo) The complainant, Kavita Tyagi, proprietor of Everest Sports Academy, had approached Lally Motors in August 2022 to purchase a Volkswagen Taigun Highline in Wild Cherry Red colour. Due to the colour's unavailability, the dealership arranged a vehicle from their Chandigarh outlet and delivered it on August 22, 2022. However, in March 2023, the complainant was surprised to see a 'service due' message on the car's dashboard. Upon inquiry, she was told the car was actually billed in March 2022—five months before delivery. This raised suspicion that she had been sold an older vehicle, despite being assured it was brand new. Repeated calls and emails to the dealership went unanswered. A legal notice sent in May 2023 received a vague reply, in which the company admitted the earlier billing, calling it an 'internal matter' to hold a special colour variant. Tyagi alleged that she suffered mental agony, harassment, and financial loss due to the misleading sale. She also raised concerns over the car's reduced warranty period and resale value. In response, Lally Motors offered to extend the vehicle's warranty by 10 months but did not accept any wrongdoing. The car was serviced three times under warranty after she raised issues, including a malfunctioning airbag light and power window switches. However, the Commission found that while there was no manufacturing defect, the non-disclosure of the car's initial billing date and misleading information about its 'new' status amounted to unfair trade practice. In its order, the Commission dismissed the complaint against the manufacturer, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd., but held Lally Motors responsible for misleading the buyer. The firm has been directed to pay ₹1 lakh as compensation within 30 days, failing which it will attract 8% annual interest until full payment is made. The order was passed by commission president Sanjeev Batra and member Monika Bhagat.

HSC re-exam pass percentage up by 10%, SSC results remain stagnant this year
1 2 Pune: The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) on Tuesday released results of Std X (SSC) and Std XII (HSC) re-examinations that were held in June-July 2025. These results were released at least a month before they are traditionally declared. While HSC re-exam results showed a rise of over 10% in the pass percentage from last time, the SSC performance remained nearly unchanged from the two previous years. This year, 43.65% of Std XII students cleared the re-exam, a significant jump from 32.46% in 2024 and 32.13% in 2023. A total of 74,130 students had registered across science, arts, commerce, and vocational streams, of which 72,554 appeared and 31,676 passed. Of 38,702 students who registered, 37,576 appeared and 13,709 passed. Additionally, 13,389 Std X students, who failed in one or two subjects, are eligible for admission to Std XI under the ATKT concession for the academic year 2025-26. MSBSHSE chairman Sharad Gosavi told TOI, "In most of the previous years, the re-exam result was declared around Aug 31. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo This year, we declared it almost a month beforehand, as exams were also held earlier. This will greatly help students applying in the centralized admission process (CAP) for Std XI, as those rounds are still ongoing. The July-end results will also help students applying for colleges after NEET, JEE, and for other professional courses, as these admission rounds are also still going on. " He added, "The Std XII result may also be higher as more students could have applied under the Class Improvement Scheme. Under this scheme, students who have previously passed in Std X and Std XII apply to improve their marks over the first time's results." Another change this year was accepting the registration of new private students (outside of the conventional school system, such as home schooling) for the June-July exam session. Gosavi explained, "Till now, registrations of private students were accepted only for the main Feb-March exam. However, many students, despite being eligible, were unable to fill the registration application within the time limit given by the board, resulting in their academic year being wasted. So, to avoid this wastage, an opportunity was given for the first time this year for registration as private students for the June-July exam session, too. "

Direct tax disputes soar 198% amid rising vacancies in revenue dept
India's tax dispute burden is rising sharply, despite multiple policy interventions aimed at streamlining compliance and reducing litigation. The Standing Committee on Finance, in its latest report tabled in Parliament on Wednesday, flagged a 198% jump in the amount of disputed direct taxes over two years. As per the report, appeals in direct tax cases rose from 51,567 in 2021–22 to 64,311 in 2023–24, while the disputed amount ballooned from ₹6.64 trillion to ₹14.21 trillion, marking a 198 per cent increase. At the Income Tax Appellate Authority, the contested sum almost tripled in one year — from ₹2.89 trillion in 2022–23 to ₹8.56 trillion in 2023–24. In indirect taxes, the number of cases went up from 1.13 lakh to 1.26 lakh, and the value involved more than doubled to ₹7.4 trillion during the same period. "Considering this data, it seems that the various measures taken by the Government to reduce tax litigation have not yielded the desired results so far..... The Committee feel that it is imperative to further enhance the focus on tax dispute redressal mechanisms and take additional measures in this regard," the report said. It highlighted that no assessment of the best practices by different countries for mitigating tax dispute burdens has been undertaken by CBDT. The Committee also took note of the 'slow pace of disposal of cases related to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA),' pointing out that 'only 45 cases have been disposed of so far' since the law came into force. Alongside rising litigation, the Committee raised concerns over the significant staff shortages in both the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). "For instance, in CBIC, against a total of 36,859 vacancies, only 4,653 officers were recruited in 2024 and 8,912 vacancies have been reported to SSC for future recruitment. This still leaves a substantial gap in sanctioned versus working strength, particularly at the crucial Inspector level which perpetuates a substantial impediment to the efficacy of field enforcement and seamless delivery of taxpayer services," the report stated. The committee noted that there are considerable numbers of vacancies in both CBDT and CBIC. In some posts, there are 100% vacancies. Even for the crucial post of Inspector of Central Excise, there are 7,744 vacancies. Such vacancies may be hampering the smooth functioning of the organizations and providing optimum services to the taxpayers. The Committee flagged persistent challenges in tackling GST evasion and fake invoicing, despite the deployment of advanced analytics and AI-based tools. "There were 12,574 GST evasion cases in 2021-22, which increased to 20,582 in 2023-24. Similarly, fraudulent ITC cases rose from 5,966 in 2021-22 to 9,190 in 2023-24. During the study visit of the Committee to Chennai and Mumbai, in Nov.2024, it emerged that fraudulent ITC cases are a significant challenge in GST, requiring urgent attention to curb it," the report stated.
