MOGADISHU : An African Union helicopter crashed today at the airport in the Somali capital Mogadishu killing at least three people, police and witnesses told AFP.
The aircraft was part of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (Aussom), tasked with fighting the Al-Shabaab insurgent group.
The helicopter, operated by the Ugandan contingent, 'crash landed' at around 7.30am local time at Mogadishu's Aden Abdulle International Airport after departing from Baledogle military airbase, Aussom said.
'Three of the eight passengers on board were immediately rescued,' and were rushed to the Aussom hospital, it said in a statement, without giving any details on their injuries.
It added search and rescue operations were underway to retrieve the remaining passengers and crew.
'There were several people recovered from the scene of the crash, three of them were already dead, and they were carried in stretchers,' police officer Abdi Ali told AFP.
Witness Mohamed Yare, who was in the airport at the time of the crash, told AFP that some of those onboard had died 'but I could not say how many'.
'There were ambulances and firefighting trucks rushing to the scene, and there was smoke and fire,' he said.
Somalia's civil aviation authorities told reporters that investigations were ongoing into the cause of the crash.
Ahmed Moalim Hassan, director-general of the Somali civil aviation authority, said that, while some of the debris had scattered across the runway, the airport remained operational.
Unverified clips and images shared online showed a plume of black smoke over the city.
The Aussom mission faces funding difficulties, even as fears of an Al-Shabaab resurgence are stoked by attacks in the Horn of Africa nation.

Nigeria arraigns five accused in 2022 Catholic church massacre in Abuja court

FILE PHOTO: People attend a mass memorial service for victims killed in an attack by gunmen during a Sunday mass service, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo, Nigeria June 17, 2022. REUTERS/Temilade Adelaja/File Photo LAGOS (Reuters) -Nigerian prosecutors on Monday arraigned five men accused of carrying out a deadly Islamist militant attack on a Catholic church in Owo, in the southwestern Ondo state, that killed at least 50 worshippers in 2022 and wounded over 100 others. The suspects - Idris Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris and Momoh Otuho Abubakar - appeared before a federal high court in Abuja, where they were charged under Nigeria's terrorism law. The suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges and were remanded in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). Judge Emeka Nwite adjourned the start of the trial to August 19. The trial is expected to test the government's ability to prosecute cases tied to terrorism, a challenge as Nigeria grapples with insurgencies and widespread insecurity. According to court filings, the men allegedly joined the East African terrorist group Al Shabaab in 2021 and plotted the assault at a public school in central Nigeria and near a mosque 30 kilometres (18.6 miles) from Owo's St Francis Catholic Church. Al Shabaab did not claim responsibility for the June 2022 attack, and its operational presence in Nigeria remains unverified. Authorities initially blamed Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which, alongside Boko Haram has waged a prolonged insurgency in Nigeria's northeast, though the group also did not claim responsibility for the attack. Peacekeepers clash with Al-Shabaab over strategic Somali town

MOGADISHU: International peacekeepers are engaged in fierce clashes with Al-Shabaab militants in a bid to reclaim the strategic town of Bariire, the African Union mission in Somalia confirmed on Sunday. The Al-Qaeda-linked group has seized multiple towns since early 2024, reversing gains made by Somali forces in previous years. The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) launched a major offensive on Friday to retake Bariire, located approximately 100 kilometres west of Mogadishu. The town, home to a critical military base, fell to Al-Shabaab in March after Somali troops withdrew, allowing militants to destroy a vital supply route bridge. AUSSOM refuted Al-Shabaab's claims of heavy army casualties, stating instead that '50 Al Shabaab militants were killed and many others sustained serious injuries' in recent fighting. Despite deploying over 10,000 troops, the peacekeeping mission has struggled against Al-Shabaab's resurgence, which has included deadly attacks on Ugandan soldiers and an attempted strike on Somalia's president in March. – AFP
