Eight devotees killed after wall collapses at Andhra's Simhachalam Temple; CM announces Rs 25 lakh ex gratia
VISAKHAPATNAM:
Eight devotees died and few others were injured after a wall collapsed at Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Simhachalam during the annual Chandanotsavam festival in the early hours of Wednesday.
The incident occurred in the Rs 300 queue line where devotees had gathered for 'Nijaroopa Darshan' of the deity. Officials said the wall gave way after heavy midnight rainfall in the region.
The wall, constructed just 20 days ago, is suspected to have collapsed due to heavy rainfall that occurred between 2:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. However, the exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation. The incident occurred shortly after the temple's hereditary trustee, Ashok Gajapathi Raju, offered silk robes to the deity as part of the traditional ritual.
Of the eight deceased, three were women and five were men. Seven of them died on the spot, while one succumbed to injuries later. 'So far, three victims have been identified through Aadhaar cards. The remaining bodies are yet to be identified and have been kept in the mortuary. Postmortem will begin once their families confirm the identities,' said K. Sivanand, Superintendent of King George Hospital. Three of the deceased are identified as Y. Venkat Rao (55), P. Swamy Naidu (33), and K. Manikanta Eswar (28).
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire services, and police were deployed immediately. Visakhapatnam District Collector M. N. Harendhira Prasad, Police Commissioner Dr. Shanka Brata Bagchi and home minister Vangalapudi Anitha visited the site and supervised the relief efforts.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep grief over the incident and held a teleconference with ministers Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, Dola Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, Vangalapudi Anitha, Anagani Satya Prasad, MP Bharat, and temple trustee Ashok Gajapathi Raju. He directed the officials to ensure proper medical care for the injured and announced the formation of a three-member committee to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident.
The Chief Minister also declared an ex gratia payment of Rs 25 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 3 lakh to each injured person. Additionally, one eligible member from each bereaved family will be offered an outsourced job under the Endowments Department.
He instructed officials to clear the debris immediately and take necessary steps to prevent inconvenience to devotees. With large crowds expected in the coming days, he also emphasised the need for crowd safety and control measures.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), expressed condolences and announced ex gratia relief of Rs 2 lakh for each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan described the incident as deeply unfortunate and extended his condolences. He said he had reviewed the situation with local officials and directed them to ensure the injured receive proper treatment.
Revenue Minister Anagani Satya Prasad, who visited the temple, stated that the government is extending all support to the affected families. Endowments Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy expressed sorrow and said the government has launched a probe into the incident.
Meanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) demanded that Visakhapatnam District Collector and Utsav Committee in-charge Ramachandra Mohan be held accountable. VHP State Math-Mandir representative Pudipeddi Sharma criticised officials for allegedly focusing on VIP arrangements at the cost of general devotees' safety.
A devotee who narrowly escaped the collapse said, 'It was a close call for me — I had passed through the same spot just three to five minutes before the wall collapsed. We heard a loud crashing sound as the wall came down, and it was truly frightening."
Former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed deep sorrow over the tragic deaths of devotees at the Simhachalam Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple during the Chandanotsavam celebrations. He urged the government to provide the best medical care to the injured and extend full support to the families of the deceased.
Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer expressed deep anguish over the loss of seven lives in the wall collapse incident at the Simhachalam temple during Chandanotsavam. Extending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Governor directed the district administration to ensure proper medical care for those injured in the incident.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy also conveyed his condolences and expressed sadness over the incident.
An inquiry into the incident is underway, and officials have assured that safety measures will be strengthened to avoid such tragedies in the future.

Cop at Bopdev Ghat help centre extorts Rs 28,000 from youths
Pune: Kondhwa police on Saturday filed a complaint against a constable and his friend for assaulting a youth from Chennai and his friends, who came to Bopdev Ghat for photography, and extorting Rs 28,000 on the pretext of filing a case against them. The incident occurred between 7 am and 9 am on June 5. The constable posted at Bopdev Ghat help centre was later suspended. Senior inspector Vinayak Patankar said, "We have served notices to constable Vikram Wadtile and his friend Kedar Jadhav, directing them to join the police in the investigation because they were charged with offences punishable up to seven years." Patankar said the 19-year-old Chennai-based youth, who is the complainant in the case, visited Pune to meet his grandparents. On June 5, the youth and his two friends visited Bopdev Ghat to take photographs and took a hookah pot with them. After a recent gang-rape incident involving a 20-year-old event management student at Bopdev Ghat, a police help centre had been set up there. Wadtile was stationed at the help centre. According to Patankar, "Wadtile questioned the youth and his two friends and searched their bag, where he found the hookah pot. Wadtile then took them to the Kondhwa police station." The police officer said, "At the entrance of the police station, Wadtile stopped the vehicle and told the youths that they would be taken to Sassoon General Hospital for a medical examination and their future would be ruined." He initially demanded Rs 25,000 from each of them. When they said they didn't have that much money, they agreed to settle by transferring Rs 28,000 online to Kedar Jadhav's account. After receiving the money, Wadtile let them go. " The complainant grew suspicious and came to the police station to verify whether Wadtile was indeed a policeman. "He informed me about the incident. The youth did not know Wadtile's name but described his physical appearance. I conducted an inquiry, which revealed that Wadtile indeed threatened and extorted money from the youths. After the extortion case was registered, Wadtile and Jadhav returned Rs 28,000 to the youth," the officer said. Deputy commissioner of police (Zone V) Rajkumar Shinde suspended Wadtile pending departmental inquiry. He said that the cop had been held responsible for tarnishing the image of the police department due to his actions.

NEET fraud: Police investigate role of Ayurveda practitioner
1 2 Jaipur: Police here are investigating the role of Subhash Saini, an Ayurveda practitioner who was posted as a community health officer in Kuchaman city of Nagaur district, for his suspected involvement in a NEET exam impersonation racket. According to police, Saini is believed to be a key link in a network that arranged dummy candidates for the national-level medical entrance exam. Saini, previously arrested in a 2013 case involving NEET fraud worth Rs 65 lakh, is no stranger to such allegations. In that instance, he was accused of charging large sums of money to guarantee NEET clearance, although the exam was eventually cancelled. Six people were arrested at the time following a complaint lodged at Chomu police station. He was also booked in 2021 by Arain Police in Ajmer along with his brother Dr Ashok for cheating. The case came to light after police arrested three individuals Friday, including Saini, a final-year MBBS student from AIIMS Jodhpur, and a medical intern from Bharatpur. The two others were identified as Sachin Gaura, 22, and Ajit Gaura, 30. All three are residents of Chomu. Jaipur DCP (West) Amit Kumar said Sachin allegedly paid Rs 60 lakh to Saini to facilitate the impersonation. The scheme allowed Sachin to use Ajit's photograph on his NEET-UG 2020 admit card, enabling someone else—possibly Ajit—to take the exam in his place. Sachin secured 667 marks and a rank of 1,443, enough to gain admission to AIIMS Jodhpur. Ajit cleared NEET in 2019 after eight years of preparation. While Ajit and Sachin were remanded by court to police custody until June 13, Santosh Saini was sent to custody till June 10. Police say they are also investigating other individuals from Chomu who may be part of the gang and have requested records from the National Testing Agency, AIIMS Jodhpur, and Shri Jagannath Pahadia Medical College in Bharatpur.

Delhi police recover counterfeit currency racket operating from bangladesh through bihar
New Delhi: In the first seizure of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) this year, Delhi Police Special Cell recovered counterfeit notes with a face value of Rs 4 lakh. The high-quality fake notes, all in Rs 500 denomination, were smuggled into Delhi via Bangladesh. The courier was traced to Datia in Bihar. The accused was identified as Naushad Alam (22), a resident of Bettiah, Bihar. Additional CP (Special Cell) Pramod Kushwaha said that the unit worked on FICN-related intelligence for the past four months. "We had credible information that an interstate syndicate was involved in the circulation of fake currency across various states, including Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR)," he said. During surveillance, it was discovered that counterfeit currency was smuggled into India through the porous Indo-Bangladesh border. Alam was finally apprehended near the Vijay Ghat Bus Stand while attempting to deliver a large consignment of fake currency to a contact of one of his associates. A cursory search led to the recovery of high-quality counterfeit notes amounting to Rs 4 lakh from his possession at the spot. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Deputy commissioner of police (Special Cell) Amit Kaushik said Alam was part of a larger interstate FICN racket. "He revealed that he used to procure fake currency at the rate of Rs 200 per Rs 500 note from his sources and sold it to his contacts for Rs 300 per note. He already delivered 4–5 consignments of FICN to various contacts in Bihar, Delhi, and NCR," Kaushik added. During the investigation, it was revealed that several Bangladesh-based operatives were involved in pumping counterfeit currency into India through border routes. Police suspect that a significant portion of the profits from this racket is used to purchase sophisticated weapons. Police said Alam, driven by financial hardship, was lured into the racket by a man who convinced him to work as a courier. On this handler's directions, Alam procured and delivered fake currency to various parts of the country. Further investigation is underway to identify other members of the syndicate and trace the network's roots.
