CPI dismisses KC(M) as party with no significant power
A working report presented at the conference noted that if KC(M) truly possessed real strength, it would not have suffered a humiliating defeat in the Kottayam parliamentary seat. Even in assembly segments like Pala and Kaduthuruthy, traditionally considered strongholds of the regional party, the candidates fielded by the LDF lagged far behind.
'During the last parliamentary election, the Left could secure a majority only in the Vaikom constituency out of the nine constituencies in Kottayam district and that is a matter of pride for the CPI,' the report stated.
While the report acknowledged some differences between the CPI and the Kerala Congress, it emphasised that the dispute is not about dominance within the LDF. Although some Kerala Congress leaders have joined the LDF, the party's cadres still maintain an affinity for the UDF, the report added.
The CPI appears clearly wary of KC(M)'s persistent push to expand its influence within the LDF in Central Travancore, seemingly with the backing of the CPI(M). The CPI(M), views KC(M)led by Jose K Mani, as its bridge to Catholic votes across the region, which for long had worked in favour of the Congress-led United Democratic Front.
Earlier last month, the CPI district conference in Idukki too dismissed KC(M) as a party with presence in only a few pockets and expressed concerns about a deliberate attempt by the regional party to overrun its position within the ruling coalition.
This is not the first time the CPI has publicly contested KC(M)'s growing ambitions. In its working report presented at the 2022 Kottayam district conference, the CPI had voiced similar criticism of the KC(M), led by Jose K. Mani.
Tensions between the two parties were also apparent after the 2021 Assembly elections when the KC(M) high-power committee criticised the CPI for its election analysis. The CPI report had blamed KC(M) for the LDF's losses in the Pala and Kaduthuruthy constituencies. In response, the KC(M) leadership accused the CPI of harbouring unfounded fears about losing its status within the LDF.
The roots of this skirmish can be traced back to the previous Assembly elections when the CPI was compelled to relinquish the Kanjirappally seat in Kottayam to the KC(M).

Following the row sparked by the arrest of two nuns from Kerala in Chhattisgarh late last month, an episode that is said to have put some strain on the ties between the BJP and the community, the Kerala unit of the party has adopted a multipronged strategy to make amends. Admitting that the issue had 'slowed down' the party's interaction with the Church leadership, a BJP leader said the 'setback was temporary'. 'We are telling the churches that only the BJP made sincere efforts to secure bail for the nuns. Many Bishops in Kerala have acknowledged our party's stand on the issue,' the leader said on the condition of anonymity. In the aftermath of the row triggered by the arrest of the nuns on charges of forced conversion and human trafficking, state BJP leaders have been meeting the Christian clergy to convince them that it was 'positive' interventions from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah that facilitated bail for the nuns, who were in judicial custody for nine days following their arrest on July 25. Despite the controversy, the BJP has a reason to cheer as not all churches are on the same page over the issue. Archbishop Joseph Pamplany, who has emerged as a key voice of the powerful Catholic Church, has attested to the role of the BJP's national leadership in securing relief for the nuns. This was in stark contrast to the stand taken by his fellow Bishop Pauly Kannookkadan who, in a pastoral letter, said the BJP governments at the Centre and Chhattisgarh did not make any move to secure the release of nuns. After the nuns were released, several Bishops and pastors of non-Catholic denominations turned up at the party headquarters to express their gratitude, making the BJP believe that the fiasco had not antagonised the entire Christian leadership in the state where Assembly polls are due in less than a year.. With the local body elections slated for later this year, the BJP is also pushing its 'Viksit Keralam' narrative in a bid to connect with the youth. 'People are worried about issues pertaining to life and livelihood. We can easily connect with Christian youth, who face issues like unemployment and are forced to leave the country in search of jobs. Our approach to the community has been issue-based. We have assured them of remedies,' a leader said. The BJP's Christian outreach in Kerala, where the party is looking to expand its footprint, has been headed by Modi himself. In April 2023, he met eight bishops of various Christian denominations and is learnt to have sought the community's support for the party. Months later in December, the party commenced a statewide drive called the 'Sneh Yatra' to reach out to the community. Its efforts looked to start paying electoral dividends as the party managed to increase its vote share by over 3 percentage points to 16.68% and won its first Lok Sabha seat in Kerala (Thrissur). What has BJP concerned Since then, the BJP doubled down on winning a chunk of the Christian vote. However, the Chattisgarh episode threatened to undo a lot of the work it had done. The party is also wary about Christians and Muslims uniting against it over the issue and is seemingly doing its bit to thwart any such formation. 'The SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami have crept into the Christians' agitation. Christian churches across the country are facing a threat from political Islam. Christians must be vigilant against them,' state BJP vice-president Shone George said. After the nuns' arrest, various Muslim organisations hit the streets, triggering concern in the BJP that the issue would unite the minority communities against it. Over the years, the BJP has managed to gain the support of a section of Christians by seemingly 'thrusting a divide' between the two communities, seen to be the voter base of the Congress. The BJP's 'damage control' was also visible in the reorganisation of its state-level organisation, which incidentally took place after the controversy erupted. In an unprecedented move, Union Minister George Kurian, national secretary Anil K Antony, state general secretary Anoop Antony Joseph and Shone George found a place in the core committee as against the usual practice of having one face from the community. While several Sangh affiliates and leaders criticised state BJP chief Rajeev Chandrashekhar's remark that the party was 'convinced that the allegations of conversion against the nuns were not true', recent developments indicate that the state BJP leadership remains unfazed over such criticism vis-à-vis its approach towards Christians.

86,000 engineers, 4,800 doctors and 18,800 MBAs among over 25.68 lakh job seekers in Madhya Pradesh
BHOPAL: More than 25.68 lakh registered job seekers, including over 86,000 engineers, 4,800-plus MBBS doctors and 18,800 MBAs, are eyeing government sector jobs in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, according to official data. The figures were revealed in the Vidhan Sabha during the recent monsoon session, in the state government's reply to a question by senior Congress MLA and former home minister Bala Bachchan. Bachchan had sought from the government details about job-seeking youth across qualifications, ranging from Class X pass-outs to post graduates and professionals. Minister of State for Skill Development and Employment Gautam Tetwal told the House that, as on June 30, 2025, graduates formed the largest group among registered job seekers on the MP Rojgar Portal (8.3 lakh), followed by Class XII pass-outs (6.22 lakh) and post-graduates (2.38 lakh). Government data shows 10.46 lakh aspirants belong to the OBC category, 6.34 lakh to the general category, 4.69 lakh to the SC category and 4.18 lakh to the ST category. OBCs form over half of the state's population, while tribals account for around 22% and SCs about 16%. The minister said the highest number of registrations was in 2023 (33.13 lakh), followed by 31.54 lakh in 2019 and 30.64 lakh in 2022. The number stood at 26.18 lakh in 2024 and 25.68 lakh so far in 2025. Placement figures peaked in 2018-19 with 1.76 lakh offer letters issued, followed by 1.21 lakh in 2021-22 and 78,800 in 2024-25. The lowest was in 2019-20 with just 4,219. Tetwal told reporters that many registered youths are already employed and are seeking better opportunities, which is why the government has shifted from calling them 'unemployed' to 'aspirational, ' the aspirants include highly qualified professionals, including doctors, engineers, and MBAs, are lining up for posts. They included as many as 4811 MBBS doctors, 86,000 engineers and 18,800 MBAs. According to figures shared by the state government during the Vidhan Sabha's recent monsoon session, as many as 80 private engineering colleges and 46 private polytechnics have shut down in Madhya Pradesh over the past decade, possibly due to waning interest among youths in engineering courses. He also questioned why registered applicants fell from 33.13 lakh in 2023 to 25.68 lakh in 2025 despite over 62.75 lakh registrations between 2018 and 2025. Robert Vadra received Rs 58 crore in proceeds of crime in land deal case: ED
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in its chargesheet said that Robert Vadra, husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, received Rs 58 crore as Proceeds of Crime (PoC) from a corrupt land deal in Gurugram. According to the ED, Rs 5 crore was routed through Blue Breeze Trading Private Limited (BBTPL) and Rs 53 crore through Sky Light Hospitality Private Limited (SLHPL).advertisementThe chargesheet also revealed that these funds were allegedly used by Vadra to purchase immovable properties, make investments, provide loans and advances and clear liabilities of group companies linked to case involving Robert Vadra dates back to September 2018, when an FIR was filed against him, along with former Haryana Chief Ministers Manohar Lal Khattar and Bhupinder Singh Hooda, real estate firm DLF and a property dealer.
