RM500mil in e-waste seized in Ops Hazard 2.0
The special operation was conducted on Monday (Jan 16) and involved multiple agencies, led by the police's General Operations Force.
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order director Comm Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said the Inland Revenue Board also estimated possible tax evasion involvement amounting to RM500mil.
"We detained 453 individuals aged between 16 and 70 during the operation.
"41 locals were detained while the rest were foreigners from various countries, including Myanmar, Bangladesh, Cambodia and the Philippines," he told a press conference in Bukit Aman on Thursday (June 19).
He said the items seized were RM240mil worth of e-waste byproducts, RM182mil of e-waste components and others worth RM82mil.
"Among the offences detected were conducting an illegal e-waste processing business, employing undocumented migrants, and not having valid business licenses," he added.
Comm Azmi said the latest operation brings the total value of e-waste materials seized since January to RM13.2bil while 1,061 individuals have been detained," he said.
Comm Azmi said Ops Hazard 2.0 was able to increase the pressure on the illegal e-waste industry.
"It consists of total action in detecting offences committed and busting syndicated crimes.
"We detected that the syndicates used proxies to conduct the illegal activities and exploited loopholes in the laws," he said.
A total of 1,582 officers and personnel were involved in Ops Hazard 2.0.

RM916,000 worth of e-cigarettes seized in Padang Besar raids
PADANG BESAR: The General Operations Force (GOF) foiled an attempt to distribute electronic cigarettes worth more than RM900,000 with the arrest of two men and the seizure of 2,400 cartons in two separate raids on Friday. In the first operation at about noon, a team of officers stopped a van at a roadblock at Kilometre 27, Padang Besar. Northern Brigade GOF commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Shahrum Hashim said checks on the courier van found eight boxes of electronic cigarettes without valid documents, believed to be en route to a house in Taman Kim, Padang Besar. "Based on follow-up intelligence, we raided a house used as a storage facility at 1.30pm and arrested a man who admitted to renting the premises. "Checks inside the house led to the discovery of 28 more boxes of electronic cigarettes, also without valid documentation. "In total, we seized 2,400 cartons, valued at RM916,000," he said in a statement today. Shahrum said the first suspect, a 25-year-old, claimed he was paid to deliver packages he was told contained cosmetics from Kuala Lumpur. "The second suspect, a 55-year-old, admitted to obtaining supplies of electronic cigarettes from a supplier in the capital to sell to local customers over the past three months. Both are being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, which carries a fine or imprisonment upon conviction, he said. Shahrum added that the GOF would intensify efforts to combat smuggling activities along the northern border and urged the public to provide information on any illegal activities to the authorities.

Indonesian man struck, killed while crossing highway
SEREMBAN: An Indonesian man died after being hit by a car while he was believed to be crossing the road from the emergency lane at Km238.4 of the Plus Ayer Keroh-Senawang expressway (northbound) this morning. Rembau deputy police chief DSP Azmi Ali said the victim, a 32-year-old lorry attendant, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8.18am due to severe head and body injuries. He said initial investigations found that the lorry driver had stopped the vehicle in the emergency lane due to a flat tyre when the victim got down and attempted to cross the road, but was hit by a Mercedes-Benz driven by a 56-year-old man. Both the lorry driver and the car driver were not injured, he said in a statement today. Azmi said the body was sent to the Rembau Hospital Forensic Unit for a post-mortem, and the case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
