Mary McAleese has admitted that she had 'dark days' within RTÉ in her early career as she revealed the words of wisdom she shared to Ryan Tubridy during his departure from the state broadcaster.
The former Late Late Show presenter and radio broadcaster departed the public service channel in 2023 amid a huge payments scandal.
Since then, the Dubliner has relocated to the UK where he broadcasts his own mid-morning show with Virgin Radio UK; launched his own book-inspired podcast, and most recently got engaged to his partner, Clare. Speaking on the season finale of the third season of The Bookshelf with Ryan Tubridy, the presenter was praised for picking himself up following the RTÉ scandal, with former President Mary McAleese relating that she 'had tough days there too.'
Kicking off the show, Mary said: 'It's good to see you — but it's particularly good to see you at this wonderful stage of your life. We hear great news about an engagement and I wish you so much happiness because God knows you deserve it!
'I remember back to the dark days, and I remember writing to you in those dark days giving you one piece of advice. It was, 'There is life after RTÉ. I should know.'' Ryan responded that the 73-year-old 'should know' having spent some time as an RTÉ employee back in the day.
'I had tough days there too,' Mary confirmed, 'Well, different but dark enough days. Days that made me decide, 'I just can't stay there anymore.' So, I know how the dark days are as you move into a new chapter, the shape of which you haven't shaped yourself, and you just don't know.
'Well, with your talent, we always knew that the shape ahead would be good and it is.'
The former President added that she was 'so pleased' for Ryan in the next chapter of his life.
Mary joined RTÉ as a journalist and presenter in 1979, departing the broadcaster in 1985.

Furious Amber Davies slams ‘selfish' audience member for ‘ruining' her West End performance

AMBER Davies has let rip at a "selfish" audience member who "ruined" her recent theatre performance. The Love Island alum, 26, has carved out a hugely successful career on the stage following her time on the ITV2 matchmaking series. Yet after the first act of the action-packed show, which is based on the F Scott Fitzgerald tome, Amber took to her social media page in a furious rant. Still in-character and donning a auburn-coloured wig, she issued a warning on Instagram. It came after she spotted an audience member filming from her seat and she added the text: "Stop filming shows, stop being selfish," on her slide. Advertisement Amber then spoke direct to camera and said: "This is a PSA. The closer you are to the stage when you're watching a show the more obvious it is when you're filming. "This is the entire stalls. If you're filming in the stalls we can see you! "From someone who's on stage, I just wanna tell you a little bit about what we see. "So we see like a dark canvas and outlines of people's heads. Advertisement "If you're filming, the reflection from the lights bounce straight back off your … the back of your iPhone onto us on stage. So it is the one thing we can see." Talking about one song in particular, she continued: "So to the woman filming New Money tonight - you distracted absolutely everybody on that stage. Dancing On Ice star Amber Davies rushed to medic as she shows off horrific bloody injury after accident at home "And not only that, it takes us out of the Gatsby world because you're filming and you've basically ruined that moment for everybody else who was watching the show tonight." Amber, who won Love Island, added in an emotional plea: "Please don't be selfish. Stop filming shows. Advertisement "If someone is filming during a show know that this is the consequences that it has to the people on stage and tell them to stop because honestly it's annoying. "Also, I single-handedly will count how many seats back you are and tell our stage manager where you're sitting and what colour hair you've got, and trust me, in the interval they will come and ask you to delete the footage so you've basically done it for nothing. "Okay, I'm gonna enjoy act two now." Previously, Amber - who was crowned winners of Love Island with ex Kem Cetinay - played the role of Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman: The Musical UK. Advertisement She has also starred in 9 to 5 alongside Dolly Parton, Bring It On, and Back to the Future. During the latter West End show, she met now-partner Ben Joyce. Prior to her stint on Love Island, Amber identified herself as a dancer. She had experience working as an entertainer in London's circus-themed club night, Cirque Le Soir—the same venue where Love Island's 2016 winner, Cara de la Hoyde, performed before her time on the show. Cracks between Kielty and Deeley appeared when they were asked on to Lucy Kennedy show

Their agents refused to deal with each other when Lucy Kennedy asked them to appear on her TV show Former golden couple Patrick Kielty and Cat Deeley's relationship deteriorated so much this year that their agents refused to deal with each other when Lucy Kennedy asked them to appear on her TV show, insiders have revealed. Sources told the Sunday World that producers of 'Living With Lucy' came up against a brick wall when enquiries were made for the duo to appear on the hit reality programme. 'The team put out feelers earlier this year to offer to film at their London home and not only did they come up against a block against the very idea, but they knew something must have been up in the relationship when they discovered in their communication with their separate agents that they refused to liaise with each other about it,' reveals our mole. Kielty will be back as Late Late host Late Late Show presenter Kielty and This Morning host Deeley issued a joint statement on Wednesday declaring their 12-year marriage was over. While the break-up may have come as a surprise to many, for other observers the writing was clearly on the wall in March when Cat did not attend the funeral of her mother-in-law Mary in Co. Down. She appeared on her TV show as normal that morning, with a spokesperson later issuing a statement about why she didn't attend. 'Cat remained at home to be there for her two young children before and after school on this very sad day,' the spokesperson said. Kielty has confirmed he will be returning to the Late Late Show in September, which is the final year of his three-year contract. 'We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved,' the couple announced on Wednesday. 'We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected. There will be no further comment.' The last prominent public pictures of the pair together was when they were on a family holiday to St Tropez in France last year. Cat (48) and Paddy (54) first met on the set of Fame Academy in 2002, but both were in relationships at the time. Kielty was previously engaged to Irish TV presenter Amanda Byram. Cat once told Ryan Tubridy on the Late Late Show how he popped the question years later, having kept in touch with her. CRACKS: Paddy at his mum's funeral while wife Cat stayed in London to host This Morning with Ben Shepherd (below) . 'There was a night where it was the day before my birthday — I can't even remember what birthday it was now! It was thirtysomething — he called me and he spoke to me on the phone,' Cat told Ryan. 'He said, 'Oh, what are you doing for your birthday? I'm just ringing to say happy birthday.' I said, 'Oh, we're going to the Beverly Hills Hotel. We're just going to have a late brunch; it's going to be very civilised. It's a shame you're not here; otherwise, you could come'.' Back then Paddy was in a pub in his hometown of Dundrum, Co. Down, and bolted home to book a 7am flight to LA for the next day. The English beauty was taken aback at his gesture and, at her birthday brunch, confessed she 'slightly fell in love with him'. They tied the knot in a private ceremony in Rome in September 2012 after nine months of dating. If Cat and Paddy had agreed to do Lucy Kennedy's show it would have been a huge feather in her cap. Host Lucy Kennedy Lucy recently let the cat out of the bag that Keeping Up With The Kardashians' star Caitlyn Jenner will be on her new series. Not only did Lucy confide in friends about the mystery celeb she spent time with in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago, but she also hinted at the location by posting a picture of a swimming pool on her Instagram stories. A reverse image search of the pool shows it's in Caitlyn's Malibu mansion. The pair first met when they both attended the Benefit Awards in Dublin in 2018, where Caitlyn received the Beauty Icon Award and Lucy was named Best Female TV Star. The first of Lucy's series were screened on RTÉ and featured Jade Goody, Samantha Mumba, Brian McFadden, David Norris, Calum Best and Dáithí Ó Sé. Six of Lucy's guests have since sadly died — Jade Goody, Sarah Harding, Brendan Grace, David Gest, Christy Dignam and Dickie Rock. Lucy (49) previously told the Sunday World that the deaths of Jade and Sarah in particular struck a chord with her. 'Both so young,' she reflected. 'I lived with Jade Goody six months before she was diagnosed. I remember I was talking to her about going into the Big Brother house in India and she asked my advice and I said 'Actually, I wouldn't'. 'She went into the house and that's where she found out she had the cancer.'
