ANC Sedibeng goes to conference
VEREENIGING.- The Regional Conference of the ANC in Sedibeng is planned for the weekend of August 15 – 17. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster by the current ANC Sedibeng Regional Secretary, Jason Mkhwane. The ANC, together with minority parties, is currently leading the most municipalities in Sedibeng. These are the Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM), where Lerato Maloka is the mayor, the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM), where Sipho Radebe is the mayor, and the Lesedi Local Municipality (LLM), where Mluleki Nkosi is currently at the helm. The exception is the Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM), where, under the leadership of Peter Teixeira, the DA has governed for years. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Mkhwane said that following a special Regional Task Team (RTT) meeting held yesterday, July 31, which was held to specifically assess progress on Branch Biennial General Meetings (BBGMs) and conference readiness, the following key points were resolved: • Sedibeng Region has 71 potential ANC branches across 73 wards. For the regional Conference to proceed, at least 50 compliant branches (70%) must have successfully held their BGMs and BBGMs. • 33 branches have successfully concluded both processes pending final verification of the National Office. 'It is therefore necessary to extend the BBGM deadline to allow the region to meet the required threshold and ensure that all branches are given adequate support or intervention where needed,' he said. Mkhwane added that the RTT has resolved on the following revised timeline: • Regional Conference: Now scheduled for August 15 – 17 • Dispute Resolution Period: May 18 to August 13 • Deadline for BBGMs: August 10 'This extension is intended to ensure that the process is inclusive, credible, and reflective of the democratic traditions of the ANC. The region remains committed to building strong, functional branches as the foundation of a united and renewed ANC.'

Major shake-up awaits ANC Western Cape, says Mbalula
ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula. Image: X/@FikileMbalula ORGANISATIONAL discipline and strategic capacity are among the pressing issues the ANC hopes its National Subcommittees will reinforce as part of reconfiguring the party in the Western Cape. "The Western Cape demands a reconfiguration of its structures, which will be executed in strict adherence to the ANC Constitution. National Subcommittees will descend to the province to reinforce with political education, organisational discipline, and strategic capacity. The National Working Committee was mandated to process this decision of reconfiguring the Western Cape Province,' said ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula. He said while the Western Cape needed urgent attention, the Provincial Task Teams (PTTs) in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng recorded significant progress in rebuilding structures and restoring organisational coherence. 'The NEC noted that ANC membership stands at 1 479 257, with 809 361 in good standing, reflecting a 19.5% increase since June 2025. This is a clear testament to the people's enduring faith in their movement. All branches must ensure compliance with functionality criteria and the completion of the Foundation Course by November 2025.' Mbalula said the NEC directed that Branch General Meetings be quality-assured and attendance verified. 'Regional Conferences remain on track, and this year we expect 45 out of our 52 regions to hold conferences by December 2025 which is a cut-off date as we focus on the Local Government Elections. It is mandatory that all comrades attending Regional Conferences must have attended and completed the Foundation Course. No conference will proceed without thorough verification and the mandatory three day cooling-off period must be observed,' he said. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ In a major development, Mbalula also announced the banning of the struggle chant 'Kill the Boer', saying no member of the ANC would be allowed to use the chant despite the Constitutional Court protecting its use. Mbalula said the party had done enough to defend its legacy and should not continue engaging in distractions aimed at distorting its historical role. 'No member of the ANC today will be allowed to sing Kill the Boer. Simple as that. Even if the Constitutional Court said you can sing, why should we sing Kill the Boer in a democratic dispensation?' Mbalula said. Cape Times

Struggle veterans in Endumeni call on municipalities to respect constitutional rights
ANC struggle veterans and members of the ANC Women's League gathered in Dundee last week to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela and reflect on the sacrifices made during South Africa's liberation struggle. The joint engagement also served as a platform for raising urgent concerns around governance, service delivery and constitutional rights. Addressing the gathering, local struggle veteran Mzwakhe Sithebe said: 'The exorbitant billing by Umzinyathi, along with misleading estimates, continues to frustrate residents. There is a serious lack of public participation within both Umzinyathi and Endumeni municipalities. This is unacceptable.' Sithebe expressed full support for the community's pending legal action against the municipality for its failure to provide water. 'An increasing number of areas in Endumeni are experiencing dry taps. This is a clear violation of Sections 24 and 27 of the Constitution. The constitutional mandate is not being honoured.' He added that the 'renewed ANC is not inward-looking but responsive to people's needs', stressing that members are committed to building a party that remains a servant of the people. Other key concerns raised during the meeting included: The slow progress on land restitution, which members said must be prioritised to build a responsive state; Allegations of nepotism in municipal appointments, with preference reportedly given to relatives of officials; Councillors failing to hold regular constituency meetings; The absence of genuine public participation in local government despite it being a cornerstone of democracy outlined in the Freedom Charter and Section 152 of the Constitution. Sithebe concluded: 'The call that 'the people shall govern' must be more than just words. Our municipalities must reflect the will and needs of our communities.'
