Wall Street hangs near its record as PepsiCo and United Airlines offset drops for health care stocks
The S&P 500 was virtually unchanged in early trading and just a bit below its all-time high set a week before. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 105 points, or 0.2%, as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was adding 0.1% to its record set the day before.
Trading was calmer than Wednesday's, when President Donald Trump jolted financial markets by saying he had discussed the 'concept' of firing the chair of the Federal Reserve but was unlikely to do so. Such a move could help Wall Street get the lower interest rates it loves but would also risk a weakened Fed unable to make the unpopular moves needed to keep inflation under control.
PepsiCo jumped 6.6% after delivering revenue and profit that topped Wall Street's expectations. The drink and snack giant stood by its financial forecasts given in April, which projected lower full-year profit than previous forecasts due to increased costs from tariffs and a pullback in consumer spending.
United Airlines flew 6.4% higher after reporting a stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. It also said it's seen an acceleration in demand from customers that began in early July, and it's expecting less uncertainty about the economy to hurt its business in the second half of this year.
Lucid Group's stock surged 25.3% after it said Uber is aiming to use 20,000 or more of its vehicles over six years in a robotaxi program. Using an autonomy system by Nuro, it expects to launch 'later next year in a major US city.'
Uber, which plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Lucid and Nuro, saw its stock edge down by 0.1%.
A strong profit report from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. helped tech stocks, and its net income soared nearly 61% in the last quarter from a year earlier. The chip maker said it's seeing strong demand from artificial-intelligence and other customers, and its stock that trades in the United States rose 2.2%.
On the losing side of Wall Street was Abbott, which fell 6.1% despite delivering results for the latest quarter that edged past analysts' expectations. The health care company cut the top end of its forecasted range for revenue growth over 2025.
Elevance Health dropped 9.2% after reporting a weaker profit than analysts expected. It cut its forecast for profit in 2025 because of rising medical cost trends in its Affordable Care Act business, along with other factors.
In the bond market, Treasury yields were mixed following several better-than-expected reports on the economy.
One said that shoppers upped their spending at U.S. retailers by more last month than economists expected. Such spending, along with a relatively solid jobs market, has helped keep the U.S. economy out of a recession.
A separate report said that fewer U.S. workers applied for unemployment benefits last week, which could be a signal of limited layoffs. A third suggested unexpectedly strong growth in manufacturing in the mid-Atlantic region.
Such solid data could keep the Federal Reserve on pause when it comes to interest rates. The Fed has been keeping rates steady this year, after cutting them at the end of last year. The Fed's chair, Jerome Powell, has been insisting that he wants to wait for more data about how Trump's tariffs will affect the economy and inflation before the Fed makes its next move.
That's because while lower interest rates could goose the economy and prices for investments, they would also give inflation more fuel when prices may already be starting to feel the upward effects of tariffs.
Thursday's strong economic helped push the two-year Treasury yield, which closely tracks expectations for the Fed, up to 3.89% from 3.88% late Wednesday.
Longer-term Treasury yields, though, eased a bit, and the 10-year yield edged down to 4.44% from 4.46%. The Fed has less influence over these yields, where investors in the bond market carry more sway.
Bond investors had briefly driven longer-term yields higher on Wednesday, when fears were high that Trump may fire Powell. The president has been angrily calling for Powell to cut interest rates, and a less independent Fed may end up keeping short-term rates low in the near term and allowing inflation to run higher in future years. Longer-term yields then relaxed after Trump said he was unlikely to fire Powell.
In stock markets abroad, indexes rose across much of Europe and Asia.

Should You Buy, Hold, or Sell AMD Stock Ahead of Q2 Earnings?
Advanced Micro Devices AMD is set to release its second-quarter 2025 results on Aug. 5. AMD expects second-quarter 2025 revenues of $7.4 billion (+/-$300 million). At the mid-point of the revenue range, this represents year-over-year growth of approximately 27%. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for AMD's second-quarter revenues is pegged at $7.41 billion, suggesting year-over-year growth of 26.96%. The consensus mark for second-quarter earnings is pegged at 47 cents per share, unchanged over the past 30 days. The earnings estimate indicates a decline of 31.88% on a year-over-year basis. AMD beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate for earnings in all the trailing four quarters, the average surprise being 2.30%. Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Price and EPS Surprise Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. price-eps-surprise | Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Quote Let's see how things have shaped up for the upcoming earnings announcement. AMD's Data Center & Client Segment Revenues to Grow Y/Y AMD's second-quarter performance is expected to have benefited from growth in both its data center and client segments, driven by continued demand for its EPYC processors and Ryzen chips. The data center segment, in particular, has been a major contributor to AMD's success, and the company expects this trend to have continued in the to-be-reported quarter. AMD expects the Data Center segment's revenues to significantly increase, driven by the strong sales of its data center chips that support hyperscalers and power AI and Generative AI applications. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for second-quarter Data Center revenues is pegged at $3.31 billion, indicating an impressive year-over-year increase of 16.7%. AMD expects a double-digit percentage increase in revenues for the client and gaming segment in the to-be-reported quarter. This growth is driven by strong desktop performance, continued demand for gaming products, and the beginning of the commercial ramp, particularly in the notebook and commercial PC markets. The company is likely to see continued growth in its client business, driven by higher demand for Ryzen processors across desktop and mobile platforms. AMD's collaborations, such as the one with Dell Technologies DELL for Ryzen Pro processors in commercial PCs, are expected to have bolstered growth in this segment in the to-be-reported quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the second-quarter Client segment revenues is pegged at $2.52 billion, indicating year-over-year growth of 69.3%. Weak Embedded Segment to Hurt AMD's Q2 Results AMD's near-term prospects suffer from weakness in the Embedded segment. On a year-over-year basis, this segment's revenues are expected to remain flat in the to-be-reported quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for second-quarter Embedded revenues is pegged at $818 million, indicating a 4.9% year-over-year decline. AMD Outperforms Sector & Industry Advanced Micro Devices shares have surged 45.9% in the year-to-date period, outperforming the Zacks Computer and Technology sector's growth of 11.4% and the Zacks Computer–Integrated Systems industry's rise of 31.4%. The company's shares have also outperformed its peer, Intel Corporation INTC, which is also expanding its footprint in the data center and client segments. Intel's shares have lost 1.3% in the year-to-date period. AMD Stock Performance The AMD stock is not so cheap, as its Value Score of F suggests a stretched valuation at this moment. In terms of the forward 12-month price/sales, Advanced Micro Devices is currently trading at 8.16X, higher than the Computer–Integrated Systems industry's 3.88X and Intel's 1.64X. AMD Valuation AMD Benefits From Rich Partner Base AMD benefits from a rich partner base, which includes Nokia NOK, Microsoft, Oracle, Dell Technologies, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Meta Platforms, and IBM, having Instinct platforms in production. In June 2025, AMD announced that Nokia had adopted its fifth-gen EPYC 9005 Series processors for the Nokia Cloud Platform. These processors will enhance performance per watt for containerized workloads, important to 5G Core, edge, and enterprise applications. The integration supports telecom networks in meeting rising data demands while improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact. The demand for AI accelerators like the Instinct MI300 series, especially from hyperscalers, is expected to continue growing, further boosting data center revenues in the second quarter of 2025. In the Data Center AI business, MI300X deployment increased with cloud partners, including Meta Platforms, Microsoft, IBM, Digital Ocean, and Dell Technologies, among others. Conclusion AMD's expanding portfolio and strategic acquisitions are expected to have improved its top-line growth in the to-be-reported quarter amid weakness in the Embedded segment, and fierce competition from NVIDIA. The most significant headwind is the new export controls on MI308 shipments to China, which are expected to reduce revenues by $700 million in the second quarter of 2025. Stretched valuation is another concern. AMD currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), suggesting that it may be wise to wait for a more favorable entry point to accumulate the stock. Canada should refrain from any retaliatory measures: Sask. Premier Moe on U.S. tariffs hike
Premier of Saskatchewan Scott Moe speaks to media following the First Minister's Meeting in Saskatoon, Sask., Monday, June 2, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Liam Richards Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says U.S. President Donald Trump's new 35 per cent tariffs are disappointing and that Canada should refrain from any retaliatory measures that would cause harm to Canada's economy. However, he says that efforts remain in effect to ensure the Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade agreement (CUSMA) remains in effect. 'While Saskatchewan is disappointed in the Trump administration's decision to increase tariffs on non-CUSMA compliant Canadian goods to 35 per cent, Canada's efforts to ensure CUSMA remains in effect means that 95 per cent of Saskatchewan exports to the U.S. will remain tariff-free,' he said in a statement. Moe says CUSMA remaining in effect is very significant given the U.S. has imposed across-the-board tariffs on many countries. Trump signed an executive order activating tariffs against 68 countries and the European Union Thursday evening. New tariffs of 35 per cent on Canadian exports, effective Friday, exclude products under CUSMA, the White House has said. Moe says Canadian exports that remain tariff-free now have a competitive advantage relative to other countries facing tariffs on the same products. 'Our government will continue to engage with U.S. businesses and lawmakers to improve our trade relationship while continuing to expand our export markets to over 160 countries around the world that buy Saskatchewan products,' he said. He says Saskatchewan will also continue to press the federal government to adopt the 'Strong Saskatchewan, Strong Canada Plan' to approve economic infrastructure projects and eliminate regulations hindering economic development. Moe is expected to speak to reporters on Friday at 12 p.m., which can be livestreamed at the top of this article. -More to come…
