Moody's warns US tariffs may hurt India's manufacturing push, slow growth
Aug 8 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump's steep 50% tariffs on Indian imports could severely undermine India's manufacturing ambitions and slow economic growth, Moody's Ratings said on Friday. Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods on Wednesday, citing New Delhi's continued purchases of Russian oil, taking the total tariff to 50% — far higher than those levied on other Asia-Pacific countries. Moody's said India's real GDP growth may slow by around 0.3 percentage points from its current forecast of 6.3% for the fiscal year ending March 2026. "Beyond 2025, the much wider tariff gap compared with other Asia-Pacific countries would severely curtail India's ambitions to develop its manufacturing sector, particularly in higher value-added sectors such as electronics, and may even reverse some of the gains made in recent years in attracting related investments," the ratings agency said. Reducing Russian oil imports to avoid penalty tariffs could also make it harder for India to secure alternative crude supplies in sufficient quantities, Moody's said. A larger import bill would widen the current account deficit, especially amid weaker tariff competitiveness that could deter investment inflows. "We expect there will likely be a negotiated solution that falls between the two scenarios described above," Moody's said. "The magnitude of the drag on growth from tariff obstacles will influence the government's decision to pursue a fiscal policy response, although we anticipate the government will adhere to its focus on gradual fiscal and debt consolidation." The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept its key rates unchanged as expected on Wednesday and retained its "neutral" policy stance following a surprise 50-basis-point rate cut in June. Global trade uncertainties, fueled by the U.S. tariffs, have also unsettled foreign investors. Foreign portfolio investors have sold $900 million worth of Indian equities so far in August, after $2 billion in outflows in July. India's benchmark equity indices — the Nifty 50 (.NSEI), opens new tab and the Sensex (.BSESN), opens new tab — fell 2.9% in July and are down 0.7% so far in August, as investor anxiety rises amid escalating trade tensions.

Airbnb expects slower growth in second half of 2025; shares fall
Aug 6 (Reuters) - Airbnb (ABNB.O), opens new tab on Wednesday forecast weaker growth for the rest of the year, with the company blaming the trend on tough comparisons with the year-ago period when strong bookings in Asia and Latin America had boosted earnings. Shares of the vacation rentals company fell more than 6% after the bell. The vacation rental company saw recovery in U.S. travel demand during the second quarter after an initial slowdown in April similar to several travel firms such as United Airlines (UAL.O), opens new tab and Wyndham Hotels (WH.N), opens new tab. The industry remains cautiously optimistic, hoping consumer confidence continues to improve despite President Donald Trump's shifting trade policy and inflation. Growth of nights booked accelerated each month during the quarter ended in June, most notably due to a rise in U.S. domestic travel, the company said. "While the quarter started with some global economic uncertainty, travel demand picked up," CEO Brian Chesky on a post-earnings call. However, the company expects night bookings growth to moderate year-over-year going into the fourth-quarter. It expects the implied take rate, or the ratio of revenue to gross bookings, to remain flat in the third quarter. In the fourth-quarter of 2024, bookings in Latin America and Asia Pacific increased a "low" 20% year-over-year after the regions also boosted results in the third-quarter. The company expects third-quarter revenue between $4.02 billion to $4.10 billion. Analysts, on average, estimated Airbnb's quarterly revenue at $4.05 billion. Nights and seats booked, an updated metric which includes the number of services booked on Airbnb's platform, rose 7% in the second quarter, while gross booking value increased 11% to $23.5 billion helped by the timing of Easter and fees for cross-currency bookings. The company reported quarterly revenue of $3.10 billion, compared with analysts' estimates of $3.04 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Airbnb posted a per-share profit of $1.03, compared with Wall Street estimates of 93 cents. The home-rental company also announced a new share repurchase program worth $6 billion.
