Acclaimed thriller hailed as a ‘masterpiece' now available to stream

Metro20-07-2025
One of the greatest horror films of all time has been made available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer.
Directed by Nicolas Roeg from a story by Daphne Du Maurier, Don't Look Now is widely regarded as a pivotal work in the genre.
It stars the late, great Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie as John and Laura Baxter, two parents grieving the recent death of their young daughter.
The pair visit Venice, where John is helping to renovate a dilapidated church. While there, they meet a pair of elderly sisters—one of whom claims to be a psychic.
John struggles with the idea that she's seeing the spirit of his recently drowned daughter but seems to be experiencing nightmarish visions of his own, leading to that shocking twist.
After first terrifying audiences in 1973, Don't Look Now is streaming for free, where it can traumatise viewers afresh.
Don't Look Now currently sits with a healthy 93% 'fresh' score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with critics describing it as a 'masterpiece' and a 'classic' of the genre.
Little White Lies has called it 'calculated perfection,' while The Times described it simply as 'genius.'
In 2002, prominent film critic Roger Ebert gave the film a glowing five stars, calling out the film as 'a masterpiece of physical filmmaking.'
Upon its release, the film was overshadowed by controversy surrounding its infamous sex scene.
As Roeg cuts between images of John and Laura getting ready for dinner, the camera also shows the pair in bed together in a raw and intimate sex sequence.
Its visual style led to persistent rumours that these were scenes of real, unsimulated sex between its actors… speculation that continues today.
'My gaze shifted to the actors, and I was riveted. By their shifting positions, it was clear to me they were no longer simply acting: they were f***ing on camera,' wrote Producer Peter Bart in his 2011 memoir, Infamous Players: A Tale of Movies, the Mob (and Sex).
However, the stars have always rejected such allegations, with Sutherland denying that Bart was even in the room at all.
In the production notes for the film's 4K re-release, cinematographer Anthony B. Richmond echoed Sutherland's denial, saying: 'We did a good job; it's very real. People still say they actually made love, but they didn't.'
Meanwhile, Christie's boyfriend at the time, actor Warren Beatty, reportedly tried to prevent the film from being released, so outraged was he by the infamous sex scene.
In April 2015, it was announced that the film would be getting a remake, to the chagrin of Hunger Games star Sutherland.
Speaking in a sweary interview with Metro, the actor described the prospect of a remake as 'shameful.' More Trending
He explained: 'Don't embarrass yourselves by participating in it. It's bulls**t. It was a piece of work indelibly written by Nicholas Roeg.
'Why would they do it? It's just people trying to profit off the back of something that's very beautiful. It's shameful. They should be ashamed of themselves.'
A decade on, and the remake has not yet resurfaced. Might it be dead in the water?

Amazon Prime's most watched film has rare zero rating and 'not a single good thing'

Ice Cube-starrer War of the Worlds, which is directed by Rich Lee and based on HG Wells's 1898 novel The War of the Worlds, has one of the rarest ratings on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes The 2025 science fiction thriller War of the Worlds is causing a stir, but not for the reasons you might expect. ‌ Despite having an unheard-of 0 per cent critics approval rating and a mere 16 per cent audience approval rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes, it's been universally slated. ‌ Interestingly, despite the film's overwhelmingly negative reviews, it's currently the most-watched movie globally on Amazon Prime Video, according to FlixPatrol. ‌ Directed by Rich Lee and based on HG Wells's 1898 novel The War of the Worlds, the 2025 film has a story by Kenneth A. Golde, with the screenplay co-written by Golde and Marc Hyman. War of the Worlds features Ice Cube in the lead role, alongside Eva Longoria, Clark Gregg, Henry Hunter Hall, Andrea Savage, Michael O'Neill, Iman Benson, and Devon Bostick, reports the Express. ‌ Released on July 30 on Amazon Prime Video, the film follows the story of Will Radford, a cybersecurity analyst working for the Department of Homeland Security. Set in a world dominated by mass surveillance, Will's job is to monitor global threats. But when meteors release insect-like machines and alien tripods heading towards Earth, chaos ensues. One critic summed up the film's poor reception, saying: "Poorly written and awkwardly paced, War of the Worlds is in contention for one of the worst movies of the decade so far." ‌ Another reviewer added: "Even with a Prime subscription, you have to sit through two minutes of ads to watch 90 more of what amounts to a feature-length commercial for all things Amazon." A third critic labelled the film as: "Hilariously bad, until it becomes visibly ridiculous. ... A 90-minute infomercial for Amazon." Yet another reviewer said: "Other than what could have been an interesting enough angle... the surrounding movie just sucks." ‌ One viewer expressed their disappointment by writing: "This falls under 'Movie Viewer Abuse' and should be registered as such. The worst movie in the history of film making." While another said: "Please, I beg you, do not waste your time watching this! Why did anyone think it would be a good idea to let the audience watch Ice Cube sitting at a screen watching other people! The effects are lame, the script is awful, I wanted the invaders to take me away so I wouldn't have to listen to the inane drivel any longer." ‌ One viewer delivered a passionate rant about their disdain for the film, saying: "War Of The Worlds is one of the most abysmal movies I've ever seen. Seriously, what are we doing? Is there no love left for cinema? How are we supposed to inspire upcoming film makers and keep the movie going experience alive when this is the best we can come up with?". They added: "The flaws of this movie stand out much more than any film I've ever seen before, god awful directing, the cinematography looks as fake as ever, and the cgi needs no introduction. "This might go down as one of the worst movies ever made in history, somehow not a single good thing was able to make it out of this film. This movie has upset me, there is no reason anyone should be watching this." War of the Worlds is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

'Heart-wrenching' drama music fans 'must see' now streaming for free

Fans have been warned to "grab your tissues" A "heart-wrenching" drama that is perfect for music fans is now available to stream, as film fans warn "grab your tissues". ‌ Dear Evan Hansen is a musical about a student - the titular Evan Hansen - who struggles with social anxiety and depression. Evan, played by Ben Platt, finds himself on an emotional journey after being caught up in a web of lies following the suicide of his classmate. ‌ Based on the Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical of the same name, the film adaptation was released in 2021 and became somewhat controversial with fans, with some saying it worked better on stage, and others complaining about changes to songs.. ‌ However, with its portrayal of mental health struggles, fans have said the film is "super emotional". And it is now available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer. A synopsis reads: "High school misfit Evan lies to comfort a grieving mother, telling her of a friendship with her late son that never existed. The falsehoods soon escalate, bringing Evan benefits - but emotional highs only give him further to fall." ‌ Fans may recognise Ben Platt (Pitch Perfect) who stars as Evan Hansen, as well as Kaitlyn Dever (The Last of Us) who stars as Zoe Murphy. Colton Ryan (The Girl from Plainville) also stars as Connor Murphy. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, opinions appear to be divided as one person wrote: "Grab your tissues (and your Connor-signed cast) - cause Dear Evan Hansen is one heck of an emotional ride." Another said: "Super emotional movie and music is incredible. I think the film adds something special that's hard to convey in Broadway. The cast is perfect and really sell the story." ‌ A third added: "The music is brilliant, the meaning of the movie inspires me, it is a funny and lovable movie." A fourth wrote: "This was honestly one of the best movies I have ever seen. After watching this, I wholeheartedly believe every teenager, parent, and teacher should watch this. Every song conveys an amazing message and the story itself shines light on mental health with teens. It is extremely sad and I did cry my entire way through this movie, but I will never regret watching it." ‌ However, another viewer wrote: "The film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen, originally a Broadway show, received mixed reviews and sparked controversy. While the music in the movie was praised for its quality, the overall execution fell short of expectations." Over on Google reviews, the praise continued as one person said: "OMG, this movie is a tearjerker and it pulled at my heartstrings multiple times throughout the whole thing." Another added: "....It's a beautiful story about social anxiety and the consequences of desperate poor choices, with heart wrenchingly beautiful songs which were delivered with raw heart."
