The 11 biggest Outlander Easter eggs in Blood of My Blood

Blood of My Blood has nods to parent show Outlander Outlander: Blood of My Blood has finally landed to much adulation from fans with the third episode set to arrive next week. ‌ The show serves as a prequel to the original Starz historical drama series based on the novels of Diana Gabaldon. ‌ Unlike Outlander, Blood of My Blood isn't adapted from any novels, but it does take its cue from Gabaldon's novels. ‌ The first two episodes fully immersed audiences into the world of Blood of My Blood, and as promised by the programme-makers, there were plenty of references to Outlander. Here are the 11 biggest Outlander Easter eggs in Blood of My Blood. ‌ 1. Julia wants to go to university Julia Moriston (played by Hermione Corfield) told one of her colleagues during World War I about her academic ambitions, referencing the real-life Edinburgh Seven, the first group of female undergraduate students admitted to a British university. They studied medicine in 1869, however a court ruled they couldn't graduate and shouldn't have been admitted in the first place. Nonetheless, the Edinburgh Seven paved the way for women to study at university and resulted in legislation that allowed women to practice medicine in 1876. ‌ The nod feels very much a reference to Julia's daughter Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe), who went on to study medicine at university and become a doctor. 2. Beside the seaside Outlander fans have been haunted by this early 20th century dancehall ditty since it resurfaced in season seven, and it plays during a montage sequence where Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) and Julia write to each other. I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside was also the song Claire sang to her stillborn child after her mother Julia used to sing it to her as a child. ‌ This tune is going to be a key link between Outlander and Blood of My Blood as well as a key clue to how Faith Fraser survived. ‌ 3. Henry's throwaway comment about a Highlander During their trip to Inverness, Henry joked about her running off with a 'handsome Highlander', which plays very much into Outlander's love triangle between Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), Claire and Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies). Thankfully, for Henry this is unlikely to be the case as Julia is going to be trying to get back to her husband given she's pregnant with their child. 4. Brian takes Julia's punishment Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) took Julia's flogging after she tried to flee from Castle Leathers. ‌ The emotive moment not only parallels with Jamie taking a punishment for Laoghaire MacKenzie (Nell Hudson), but also his own beatings at the hands of the evil Captain Black Jack Randall (also Menzies), which left him scarred for life. 5. Ellen's chess skills A series of sweet flashbacks showed Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) playing chess with her father Red Jacob (Peter Mullan) before his death, showing his favour towards her and also equipping her with the strategic skills needed to outwit her enemies. ‌ It looks like Jamie learnt his chess skills from his mother and played both in France, but also while he was imprisoned at Ardsmuir with governor Lord John Grey (David Berry). 6. Henry mentions the New World After going through the stones and ending up in the 18th century, Henry found himself at a tavern where he made a reference to North and South Carolina. A tiny moment and line, but it's a nod to Fraser's Ridge in North Carolina in the New World, as well as feeling very much like Claire's constant references to the future and the things that will come to pass. ‌ 7. A mention of Claire Henry and Julia discussed their beloved daughter Claire as her parents worried how she would cope with becoming an older sister. Audiences also got to see a newborn Claire after Julia gave birth to their daughter. ‌ 8. Henry and Julia's Inverness trip & going through the stones Julia and Henry's romantic getaway to Inverness mirrored the first episode of Outlander and Claire and Frank's second honeymoon to the Scottish Highlands after their WWII separation. The shots of the couple driving in the car is also evocative of Frank and Claire's trip, and even the way Henry says 'Mrs Beauchamp' has echoes of his future son-in-law. There was, of course, the moment they both went through the stones which felt exactly like Claire's first journey through time. ‌ 9. Murtagh's boar tusk bracelet Murtagh Fitzgibbons (Rory Alexander) was seen making a set of boar tusk bracelets for Ellen after killing a wild boar in the hopes of impressing her. As Outlander fans will know, these bracelets were previously referenced when it was revealed he gave them to Ellen as her wedding present when she married Brian. Despite being besotted with Ellen, Murtagh also shared a flirty exchange with her younger sister Jocasta Cameron (Sadhbh Malin), with the pair sleeping together years down the line in Outlander. ‌ 10. Angus and Rupert show up In a sweet nod to Outlander, fans got to see a young Rupert (Louis O'Rourke) and Angus (Marlow Walters) after they were spying through a keyhole. The scene was all the more poignant as the two young actors playing the roles are the sons of old Rupert star Grant O'Rourke and old Angus actor Stephen Walters. ‌ Season one of Outlander saw Jamie thick as thieves with Rupert and Angus, with the characters still beloved by the fandom. 11. Julia's medical knowledge and engineering skills Finally, Julia showed off both her medical knowledge and engineering skills, after saying raspberry leaves were good for pain relief during childbirth and she mended her husband Henry's wristwatch. Both of these nod to her physician daughter Claire and her engineer granddaughter Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton). Outlander season 8 will air on Starz and MGM+ via Prime Video in early 2026

Blood of My Blood Ellen Fraser star opens up about bagging role on Outlander spin-off

Harriet Slater stars as Ellen Mackenzie Fraser in the new show, which will detail the love story of Claire and Jamie Fraser's parents from the original beloved Outlander franchise. Outlander Blood of My Blood actress Harriet Slater has given fans an insight into what to expect from the first series of the Starz spin-off. She also divulged how she landed the role as Ellen Fraser, as well as her impromptu move to Glasgow. ‌ English-born actress Harriet gushed over her new role in the historical romance series, which comes off the back of Outlander. The original show was based on Diana Gabaldon's best-selling book franchise, and has amassed fans across the globe. ‌ Harriet confirmed she will be moving to Glasgow. Not only did she explain how thrilled she was at the "priviledge" of bagging the role of Ellen Fraser, Jamie Fraser' s mother, but she also gave a clue of what's to come as she leaves London behind. ‌ Sony Pictures shared a spotlight moment with the actress, asking some burning questions many fans will be eager to hear ahead of the series airing tomorrow, Friday August 8. They captioned the Instagram video: "Introducing Harriet Slater. In #BloodOfMyBlood, we know her as Ellen MacKenzie. Don't miss the premiere of #Outlander: Blood Of My Blood this Friday August on @starz!" ‌ Harriet explained: "When I found out I was booked for the series I was about to leave this flat in London and I had no idea where I was going to move to and this settles that problem immediately, I was like 'great I guess I'm moving to Glasgow'." "It feels such a priviledge actually to be going into something that has such a dedicated exisiting fanbase, so I really hope they all enjoy the new show," she added. Discussing how it felt to be on set, the actress detailed: "The very first day that we were on location it really made me feel like I was immersed in that world, and that was a really exciting feeling." ‌ "Greatest love story of all time? I'm going to say Romeo and Juliet, because I think there are many similarities between those guys and Ellen and Brian," she quipped, when asked about what love tale strikes a chord with her the most. Describing her character in three words, Harriet said: "I would say she is determined, smart and passionate." She also teased what lies ahead in the season, noting: "There's more love, more action, death and birth and all the messy, exciting and relatable parts of life." ‌ The series will follow two new love stories, one which starts on the battlefields of the Western Front during World War I and the other in the meadows of Scotland in the early 18th century. It will unravel the tale of both Jamie and Claire Fraser's parents. Since its debut more than a decade ago, Outlander itself has amassed a global fanbase. The historical romance series, centring round Claire Randall/Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), saw their love affair quickly capture hearts. However with the show nearing its end with the eighth and final season set for 2026, the phenomenon is expanding in the form of a spin-off to Diana Gabaldon's treasured franchise.

What happens to Malcolm Grant in Outlander after Blood of My Blood appearance?

Blood of My Blood fans are curious about the character WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Outlander: Blood of My Blood and the Outlander novels by Diana Gabaldon ‌ Outlander: Blood of My Blood has now premiered its first two episodes on both sides of the Atlantic with a positive response from the fandom. ‌ The show serves as a prequel to the phenomenally successful historical romance drama Outlander, with episode three hitting screens next week. ‌ The first two episodes saw Dougal MacKenzie (played by Sam Retford) getting into a bloody fight with Malcolm Grant (Jhon Lumsden) and his men after he wrongly thought they'd abducted and compromised his sister Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater). Ellen was last seen wandering the grounds of Castle Leoch with Grant, before the two parted ways and she went off for a clandestine meeting with Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy). It was clear Malcolm was romantically interested in Ellen and planned to propose to her, before realising she'd lied to him and had other plans. ‌ Dougal's rash actions led to animosity between the Mackenzies and Grants, with Colum MacKenzie (Seamus McLean Ross) trying to appease the rival clan by proposing a union between Ellen and Malcolm. Even though the Grants' advisor Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) seemed uncertain about the match, his MacKenzie counterpart Ned Gowan (Conor MacNeill) advised him it would be better than spilling blood. ‌ Colum's decision flew in the face of his late father Red Jacob's (Peter Mullan) promise to Ellen that she would never be forced to marry. Many fans are already curious to know about Malcolm's fate in the Outlander books as they try and look ahead for spoilers - here's what we know so far. ‌ What happens to Malcolm Grant in Outlander? In the Outlander books by Diana Gabaldon, Malcolm is the chieftain of Clan Grant and a rejected suitor of Ellen. He wanted an arranged marriage with Ellen but after she turned him down, he was no longer an ally to Clan MacKenzie. ‌ Like TV series Blood of My Blood, Dougal and Colum wanted to marry off Ellen to Malcolm, against the wishes of the deceased Red Jacob. The Grants and Mackenzies knew each other prior to idea of the arranged marriage, but Ellen had other plans. ‌ According to the Outlander fandom page, during the 1716 Gathering at Castle Leoch, Ellen said something so offensive to Malcolm that he dramatically left the event without saying a word to the hosts. Ellen, too, left Castle Leoch and eloped with Brian and hid from her brothers. In order to secure their union, Ellen and Brian only came out of hiding when she was visibly pregnant with their baby and they would have to marry or face social stigma. ‌ Although this is the trajectory of the story as outlined in the Outlander novels, Blood of My Blood might only use this as a rough guide. The trailer for Blood of My Blood also features a shot of Malcolm and Ellen participating in some sort of ceremony, which may or may not be their wedding. If this is the case, then it means the show is taking a different route to the source material. ‌ Given Blood of My Blood isn't an adaptation of any novels, the writers may choose to take a different direction and keep this storyline running for a while. Blood of My Blood has already been renewed for season two and work is taking place on the forthcoming out, suggesting the plot will have been stretched to maintain the thread of narrative tension. Outlander season 8 will air on Starz and MGM+ via Prime Video in early 2026
