Rise of Global South shaping new world order, says PM Modi in Ghana

, addressing Ghana's Parliament on Thursday, said the world order created after WWII is changing rapidly, driven by the rise of the
Global South
and shifting demographics.
"In this changing context, we put emphasis on Africa's rightful place at the global high table," Modi said, noting that during India's G20 presidency, "we worked with the vision-One Earth, One Family, One Future," which helped secure permanent G20 membership for the African Union.
Calling India the "mother of democracy," Modi said: "Democracy is not merely a system; it is a part of our fundamental values... India has over 2,500 political parties, 20 different parties governing different states, 22 official languages, thousands of dialects. This is also the reason that people who came to India have always been welcomed with open hearts."
He said the shared histories of colonialism bind India and Ghana: "Our spirits have always remained free and fearless... Our friendship is sweeter than your famous Sugar Loaf Pineapple."
On global challenges, Modi noted: "The challenges, such as colonial rule, that humanity has faced in earlier centuries still persist in different forms... climate change, pandemics, terrorism, and cybersecurity. Institutions created in the last century are struggling to respond. We need more than slogans. We need action."
Thanking President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana for conferring on him the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, Modi called it a symbol of "enduring friendship."
Quoting Ghana's founding father Kwame Nkrumah-"The forces that unite us are intrinsic and greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart"-Modi underscored the long-term value of building democratic institutions.

during Modi's visit, agreeing to enhance cooperation in defence, food security, pharmaceuticals, and vaccine production. Four MoUs were signed, including on traditional medicine and cultural exchanges.

‘Why is socialist and secular in BJP's constitution': Amid Preamble row, Kharge's retort
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge asked the Bharatiya Janata Party Friday why it had included the words 'socialist and secular' in the party constitution when leaders of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh were calling for their removal from India's Preamble. At a public meeting attended by Congress workers from across Telangana, Kharge read out Article II of the BJP constitution which read: 'The Party shall bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established and to the principles of socialism, secularism and democracy and would uphold the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India'. Commemorating 50 years of the imposition of the Emergency at an event last month, RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale called for a discussion on whether the words 'socialist' and 'secular' should remain in the Preamble of the Constitution because 'they were added later'. Without naming Hosabale, Kharge, who was speaking at an event called 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan', said: 'Now an RSSwala wants to change the preamble of the constitution by removing the words secular and socialist. I challenge you, BJP, (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi, (Home Minister Amit) Shah and everyone. No one can change or remove this (from the constitution). It is my challenge. You won't be able to do so'. Criticising the current BJP rule in the Centre, Kharge said: 'Modiji has visited 42 countries, but he has not visited our own Manipur. Manipur where rape, violence is happening. Why is Modi silent about Manipur? Rahul Gandhi and I went there. Modi has not even peeped into Manipur to see what's happening there'. About the Pahalgam terror attack, Kharge said: 'We had stood behind the country and the soldiers of the country when the terror attack happened. But why did Modi leave the war in the middle? He did not make use of the chance he got to square with Pakistan,' he said. Coming down heavily on US President Donald Trump's announcement that he 'brought peace' between India and Pakistan, Kharge said, 'Why is Modi silent about Trump's announcement'. He added that India's foreign policy has made enemies out of countries everywhere. Kharge added, 'We will teach BJP a lesson. The Congress party will come to power in the Centre…Modi and Shah will leave Delhi when this happens'. In Telangana, Kharge said that 42 percent reservation for Backward Classes will be implemented in educational and employment and local body elections. 'We will not stop till the BC reservation is implemented in the state,' Kharge said, congratulating the state government for conducting the caste survey. In the meeting which was held to boost the morale of Congress workers at the booth and local body levels, Kharge said that every development programme implemented by the state should reach 'each household'. He exhorted workers to relay the welfare measures of the Congress including those for farmers, women and youth to the grassroots.

India proposes retaliatory duties against US's auto tariffs at WTO
India on Friday proposed retaliatory duties at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) against the tariffs imposed by the United States (US) on automobiles and certain auto parts, even as both nations are close to finalising an interim trade agreement. 'The proposed suspension of concessions or other obligations would take the form of an increase in tariffs on selected products originating in the United States. Without prejudice to the effective exercise of its right to suspend substantially equivalent obligations referred to in Article 8.2, AoS, India reserves its right to suspend concessions or other obligations after the expiration of thirty days from the date of this notification,' according to a WTO notification. India further stated that the safeguard measures will impact $2.895 billion worth of Indian-origin auto product exports annually, with duties totalling $723.75 million. Therefore, India plans to suspend trade concessions of equivalent value in response. Last month, India submitted a formal notification to the WTO under the Agreement on Safeguards, informing the multilateral trade body of its intention to suspend concessions under the agreement in response to tariffs imposed by the US on steel, aluminium, and their derivative products. India's position is that the US tariffs—imposed under Section 232 of the US Trade Expansion Act of 1962—amount to safeguard measures under WTO rules, entitling India to withdraw equivalent concessions. Currently, all eyes are on the announcement of the interim trade deal between both nations, as the 90-day pause on the US's plan to impose country-specific reciprocal tariffs ends on 9 July. Both sides are aiming to finalise an 'early tranche' or the first part of a broader bilateral trade agreement (BTA), which was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in February.
