Government will refine SST to avoid burdening Malaysians
According to Altimet, the voices, views and concerns of the public have never been ignored by the government.
SHAH ALAM – The government appears ready to review and improve the recently announced Sales and Services Tax (SST) if any shortcomings or public discomfort arise during its execution.

According to him, the voices, views and concerns of the public have never been ignored by the government.
'The Madani Government today is a government that listens.
"In its efforts to generate national revenue for a stronger and more competitive future, the government continuously strives to find the most balanced approach to increase income without burdening the people.
'I must clarify that the SST is fundamentally a progressive tax and does not target the low-income group.
"It is selectively applied and I am confident the government is open to reviewing and improving it from time to time.
"For example, there has been confusion regarding the tax on imported fruits such as apples and oranges, which we consume daily. On this matter, I believe the wisdom of the Prime Minister will ease the public's concern," he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Altimet believes the government continues to prioritise local fruits as the people's primary choice.
He said local fruit traders have the potential to benefit indirectly as reliance on imports begins to decrease.
'I believe, as has often been the case, there will be a fair and reasonable solution. Like other policies, SST is not static...it can be refined for the common good.
'In conclusion, let us continue to share our views respectfully and openly. The Madani Government may not be perfect, but it is a government that is sincere in its efforts and always ready to improve for a more stable, prosperous, and harmonious Malaysia,' he added.

Meanwhile, Anwar said the state of Malaysia's naval assets, revealing that the country is still displaying ships from as far back as 1976. "I went to Langkawi to see the ships. It's true. "Even a ship from 1976 was brought in because we have no other ships. Imagine how I felt, spending billions of ringgit, yet we have no ships. "In 1976, I was still resting in Kamunting, and that same ship is still being used," he said. Anwar said defence procurement must be conducted transparently, free from excessive reliance on agents and political considerations. "Negotiate properly, check the costs, and do not add political considerations or personal interests. "That is why I say procurement must be transparent, we must stop excessive dependence on agents, and we must make the best use of government-to-government (G2G) arrangements," he said. He was responding to Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau), who had asked about the number of ships in service that are more than 30 years old.

G2G Approach Proves More Effective, Cost-efficient In Defence Procurement
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The government-to-government (G2G) approach in the procurement of military assets has proven to be more effective, transparent and cost-saving, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the method allows for direct negotiations between the Malaysian government and the producing country without the involvement of third parties, thereby avoiding delays and cost wastage due to high commission payments to agents. 'When we negotiate directly with governments, costs are immediately reduced because we have eliminated the excessively high agent fees. That is why the (procurement) process is now completed; in the past, orders would always get stuck,' he said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today. Anwar said this in reply to a question from Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas), who asked about the level of the country's defence preparedness in facing global and regional geopolitical uncertainties. The Prime Minister said the G2G approach is now the government's main policy in strategic procurements, including with Korea, Turkiye and Italy, which has seen several major military projects proceed smoothly and according to schedule. Responding to Ahmad Fadhli's supplementary question on the proposed purchase of Black Hawk helicopters or F/A-18 fighter jets, Anwar said any decision on the procurement of air defence assets would be made by the Royal Malaysian Air Force Technical Committee. 'They (the technical committee) will be fully responsible for determining its readiness; if it cannot be justified, we will not sign. That is clearly our policy,' he said. At the same time, Anwar said the government is also focusing on enhancing preparedness, particularly in Pulau Banggi, Sabah, following geopolitical developments involving the presence of Philippine and United States military forces in the southern Philippines, near Malaysia's border. Aid for Indian community channelled through many agencies, not just Mitra
KUALA LUMPUR - The allocations and assistance for the Indian community are channelled comprehensively through various ministries and not solely concentrated under the Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit (MITRA), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said there are other programmes with substantial allocations under various ministries that benefit the community in areas such as education, housing and business, in addition to the specific annual allocation of RM100 million for MITRA. For example, the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) cash aid for the Indian community amounted to half a billion ringgit in 2022, while for 2025 it has reached RM1 billion, he said. Additionally, the Housing Credit Guarantee Scheme worth RM1.2 billion has been provided for the community. "In 2024, out of the RM100 million allocation for MITRA, RM98.9 million has been spent, benefiting 122,082 members of the Indian community. "Other forms of assistance include RM93 million in early education subsidies, RM17.63 million in higher education aid for the Indian B40 community, and RM2.99 million in laptop assistance for SJKT (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil), involving 6,000 laptops distributed in stages. "Therefore, claims that the government appears to neglect (the Indian community) or that allocations for MITRA are not approved promptly are not true," he said during the Minister's Question Time session in the Dewan Rakyat today. The Prime Minister was responding to a question from S. Kesavan (PH-Sungai Siput) regarding the MADANI Government's focus through MITRA or other agencies in efforts to comprehensively develop the socio-economic status of the Indian community. Elaborating, Anwar said that for 2025, the government is taking a different approach in channelling assistance to the community, with better coordination involving each ministry and MITRA. For example, in the case of housing projects for the Indian community under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), he said additional funds from MITRA would be coordinated to cover shortfalls. "So, if KPKT spends RM20 million, an additional RM5 million (from MITRA funds) will be coordinated. ICT (information and communication technology) laboratory equipment assistance in 50 SJKT receives RM5 million from the Ministry of Education and partly from MITRA. "A total of 200 Hindu places of worship or Hindu temples registered as Local Community Centres nationwide have been allocated RM20 million, in addition to a one-off RM10 million allocation from the Implementation Coordination Unit, Prime Minister's Department (ICU JPM) for minor repairs and maintenance of residences of Indian estate workers," he said. On the issue of hardcore poverty among the Indian community, Anwar stressed that efforts to centralise programmes aimed at eradicating hardcore poverty must be strengthened and carried out comprehensively, including involving the community. He said the MADANI Economic framework focuses on comprehensively eradicating hardcore poverty in every state and district without racial distinction. "The number of poor among the Malays is very high because the majority of the country's population is Malays; therefore, (aid) programmes are naturally much higher for the Malay community. "As for the Indian community, although the population is smaller and the number of poor is smaller compared with the Malays, there are groups within the Indian community who are relatively poorer and among the poorest, and that is what we need to address. That is why the centralisation of programmes to eradicate hardcore poverty needs to be strengthened - our policy is clear,' he said. Anwar was responding to a supplementary question from V. Ganabatirau (PH-Klang) regarding clear guidelines in the 13th Malaysia Plan to eradicate poverty within the Indian community. - BERNAMA
