Social media users in China have backed Elon Musk, celebrating him for challenging US President Donald Trump amid rising tensions between the two. The tech billionaire has stirred up online excitement in China after he criticised Trump's sweeping tax and spending legislation and threatened to launch his own political platform. As Musk vowed to challenge lawmakers backing the bill – which has now passed the Senate and is projected to increase US national debt by $3.3 trillion – Chinese netizens were quick to rally behind him. Their reaction has turned the public fallout between Trump and Musk, once close allies, into a hot topic online.
On Wednesday, following the bill's passage, the hashtag #MuskWantsToBuildAnAmericaParty surged on Weibo – China's equivalent of Musk's platform X – garnering over 37 million views.
One user commented, 'If Elon Musk were to found a political party, his tech-driven mindset could inject fresh energy into politics. The potential for change is significant – and worth watching.' Another added, 'When you've had enough, there's no need to keep putting up with it.'
Capturing the tone across the platform, a popular post declared: 'Brother Musk, you've got over a billion people on our side backing you.'
Musk celebrated as 'tech hero' in China
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, enjoys immense admiration in China for his 'technological vision and entrepreneurial success'.
Tesla stands out as the only Western electric vehicle brand that competes strongly with local Chinese companies, and its largest production facility by output is based in Shanghai.
Musk also maintains strong ties with Chinese leadership, notably with Premier Li Qiang. His mother, Maye Musk, has also become a social media sensation in China, attracting her own following.
Musk's popularity is part of a broader Chinese fascination with American tech pioneers.
Walter Isaacson's biographies of Steve Jobs and Elon Musk both became bestsellers in China, reflecting the widespread interest in such innovation-driven figures, according to The Guardian report.
Donald Trump 'looking into' deporting Tesla CEO Elon Musk?
Trump has issued a sharp warning to Elon Musk, threatening deportation after the billionaire intensified his opposition to Trump's sweeping tax cuts and multi-trillion-dollar spending bill.
In addition, Trump proposed that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) examine the federal subsidies awarded to Musk's companies – Tesla and SpaceX – as a potential cost-saving measure.
The president's latest comments followed Musk's renewed criticism of what Trump has called his 'One Big Beautiful Bill,' which the administration aims to push into law by July 4. Trump hinted that targeting Musk through DOGE could pose challenges for his business interests.
"We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. He gets a lot of subsidies. But Elon is very upset that the EV mandate is going to be terminated. Not everybody wants an electric car," Trump told reporters at the White House.
In response to Trump's threat, Musk posted on social media: "So tempting to escalate this. So, so tempting. But I will refrain for now."
Once a close political ally of Trump, Musk had endorsed his re-election bid and contributed financially to his campaign. However, their relationship has fractured in recent months, particularly over the proposed $4 trillion tax-and-spending bill. Musk, a vocal critic of the legislation's impact on U.S. national debt, has even vowed to back candidates running against lawmakers who support the bill.

Indian businesses hoping for US trade deal ahead of tariff deadline, says CII's Memani

New Delhi: Indian businesses are hoping for a breakthrough in trade negotiations with the US as the deadline for higher reciprocal tariffs approaches, said Rajiv Memani, chairman and chief executive of EY India, who has recently taken over as president of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for 2025–26. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Memani underscored the urgency of boosting Indian competitiveness through regulatory and business reforms. 'India's economy is expected to grow at 6.4–6.7% this fiscal,' he said, in line with projections in the Economic Survey. Highlighting India's ongoing trade diplomacy, Memani said the country has been actively signing free trade agreements and that 'very good progress' has been made in negotiations with the European Union. 'I think India is dealing more with non-tariff barriers in the EU rather than tariff barriers—and how those non-tariff barriers can be simplified,' he said. On the US front, Memani pointed to the 9 July deadline for concluding a bilateral trade deal, which would avert a sharp increase in tariffs on Indian exports. 'In the case of the US, we have a date,' he said, referring to the pending imposition of a 26% reciprocal tariff that would replace the current 10% baseline if no agreement is reached. US President Donald Trump's 'reciprocal tariffs' policy—announced in April—seeks to impose higher import duties on countries that levy steeper tariffs on American goods, triggering a wave of trade renegotiations. A broad 10% baseline tariff was introduced, with higher rates applied to countries such as China and Vietnam. A temporary 90-day pause was allowed for bilateral negotiations ahead of the 9 July deadline. 'Most businesses, most CII members are very keen that an agreement or an FTA—or some tranche of an FTA—gets signed, because people are wary of a tariff being imposed. And I think there is a reasonable sense of confidence that something may happen in the not-too-distant future. Those FTA engagements are going on very well,' Memani added. Trump told reporters on Wednesday that he was expecting a deal with India, 'in which case, there will be much less tariffs.' Memani cautioned, however, that even as India expands its trade ties, competition from the Western world is intensifying. 'Tariffs will go down for a large part of the Western world, and Indian industry will be facing more intense competition,' he said. 'Therefore, the urgency to do reforms, the urgency to do business reforms, and the urgency to enhance competitiveness is very high. We are seeing much greater receptivity and openness in the government to look at ease of doing business,' Memani noted. He added that India must focus on both labour-intensive and advanced manufacturing, while also preparing for the challenges posed by artificial intelligence. 'One issue that needs attention is how AI will impact the efficiency of Indian industry—and how related challenges such as employment are dealt with,' he said. CII expects India's real GDP to grow by 6.4-6.7% in FY26. 'This projection, generated through CII's GDP growth model, reinforces India's position as the fastest-growing major economy in the world,' Memani said. To ensure India doesn't fall behind in the AI race, CII has proposed setting up a National AI Authority to coordinate policy, infrastructure, and adoption. The body would also support investments in semiconductor fabrication facilities, cloud infrastructure, and AI skilling programs, he said. Given the rise in global protectionism and trade uncertainty, Memani emphasized that domestic consumption remains India's primary growth driver. 'India is becoming increasingly reliant on it to sustain momentum,' he said.

Iran Committed To Non-Proliferation Treaty, Foreign Minister Says

Dubai: Iran remains committed to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and its safeguards agreement, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Thursday, a day after Tehran enacted a law suspending cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog. "Our cooperation with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) will be channeled through Iran's Supreme National Security Council for obvious safety and security reasons," Araqchi wrote in a post on X. President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday enacted the legislation passed by parliament last week to suspend cooperation with the IAEA, a move the U.S. called "unacceptable." Araqchi's comment on X was in response to a call from Germany's Foreign Ministry urging Tehran to reverse its decision to shelve cooperation with the IAEA. Araqchi accused Germany of "explicit support for Israel's unlawful attack on Iran, including safeguarded nuclear sites". Iran has accused the IAEA of siding with Western countries and providing a justification for Israel's June 13-24 airstrikes on Iranian nuclear installations, which began a day after the U.N. agency's board of governors voted to declare Tehran in violation of its obligations under the NPT. Western powers have long suspected that Iran has sought to develop the means to build atomic bombs through its declared civilian atomic energy programme. Iran has repeatedly said it is enriching uranium only for peaceful nuclear ends. IAEA inspectors are mandated to ensure compliance with the NPT by seeking to verify that nuclear programmes in treaty countries are not diverted for military purposes. The law that went into effect on Wednesday mandates that any future inspection of Iranian nuclear sites by the IAEA needs approval by Tehran's Supreme National Security Council. "We are aware of these reports. The IAEA is awaiting further official information from Iran," the Vienna-based global nuclear watchdog said in a statement. U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce told a regular briefing on Wednesday that Iran needed to cooperate fully with the IAEA without further delay.
