How playing a 'Ben 10' put Generations: The Legacy actor Sicelo Mabaso in the spotlight

News2402-05-2025
When young actor Sicelo debuted on one of South Africa's leading shows, "Generations: The Legacy," playing the character Samkelo, viewers were immediately captivated by his undeniable charisma and passionate performance.
His character quickly became the center of a steamy storyline featuring a romance between his younger character and the older Lucy Diale, portrayed by veteran actress Manaka Ranaka.
The relationship plot reached its climax when the pair locked lips in a passionate scene that set social media ablaze.
Sicelo Mabaso believes that portraying a "Ben 10" (a younger man dating an older woman) has helped highlight society's double standards regarding age in relationships. While men dating younger women is often accepted without question, the reverse frequently faces scrutiny and judgment.
Drum magazine recently caught up with the talented young actor to learn more about his journey into acting and the significant break that "Generations: The Legacy" represents in his career.
The controversial storyline has not only showcased his acting abilities but also sparked important conversations about relationship dynamics in South African society.
His charisma extends far beyond the small screen, this we find out when we catch up with him.
He's on set, but he decides to squeeze us in, and just like his captivating character, he's determined to let us in on the magic that is his character.
Sicelo tells Drum that his role has exposed the societal double standards that exist, where one gender is more welcome to date an older partner while the other partner is prohibited.

'Playing a Ben 10 has really exposed the double standards within society where a young male dating an older woman is frowned upon, but a male dating a younger woman is acceptable. It goes back to the expectation that a male is bigger than a female in a relationship, that males are the head in a relationship, instead of equals,' he says.
'The reality is that a female has as much to contribute in a relationship as the male does.'

His current role is entertainment breakthrough, although he's not new to the acting scene, as he has acted in The Ferguson Films' Unmarried season three, and in a Netflix series.
Growing up, he recalls how much he enjoyed circus performances.
'As a kid, I remember that whenever circus tents came to my town I would always attend performances whenever I could. I then started enjoying watching movies on TV, that small box made me feel some type of emotion. I enjoyed the laughter the actors' brought to my household. The character of Samkelo is my biggest break,' he explains.

In his pursuit of a career in showbiz, Sicelo obtained an undergraduate degree from Rhodes University and he subsequently went on to obtain a post graduate degree honours in theater and performance.
He maintains that he shares some character traits with Samkelo.
'We are both very charismatic, and I'm also very resilient, in what I want to pursue. Playing the character has been awesome and so has the response from the viewers, who enjoy the character's personality and drive. Just like Sam, I also believe that I can achieve anything I set my mind to,' he concludes.

KPop Demon Hunters Get Golden News As Special UK Screenings Are Announced

Time to warm up those vocal cords, because KPop Demon Hunters is about to hit cinemas as part of a very special release. If you've had the soundtrack on repeat since watching the animated K-pop fantasy film on Netflix, HUNTR/X and Saja Boys fans will now have the chance to not only see the movie on the big screen, but belt out all the songs to your heart's content at a singalong screening. Netflix has announced it will be hosting a series of these screenings across the UK over the Bank Holiday weekend on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August, which follows the announcement of similar events in the US and Canada (more information can be found here). The animated musical adventure follows K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey who use their secret identities as demon hunters to protect fans from a supernatural threat, which shows up in a rival boy band of demons in disguise. Since its release in mid-June, KPop Demon Hunters has not only remained hovering around the top of Netflix UK's most-watched films (it's in the number one spot at the time of writing), but it has also been crowned the most popular Netflix animated movie of all time, along with becoming the first original animated movie to enter the Most Popular Movies List (English). The soundtrack, meanwhile, has dominated the charts, with breakout track Golden by Ejae, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami hitting the number one spot on both the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the UK Official Singles Chart. Golden's rise to the top of the UK charts made it the first K-pop number one in 13 years, following PSY's Gangnam Style in 2012. It's also the first time a song from an animated movie has hit number one since We Don't Talk About Bruno from the Encanto soundtrack three years ago. And Golden isn't the only song fans can't stop streaming, as Soda Pop and Your Idol are still in the UK top 10. News About The ‘Sullivan's Crossing' Season 4 Release Date, As Season 3 Hits Netflix

It took me a second to understand why Sullivan's Crossing, the licensed Netflix series, was surging back up the Top 10 list, behind only Wednesday. But what's happened is that season 3 of the show has arrived on Netflix, as previously there were only two seasons of the show there, despite season 3 already airing elsewhere. In the US, that elsewhere was on The CW, and some people may not have realized that you already could watch Sullivan's Crossing season 3 on that app, albeit it's pretty janky and has forced commercials in it. If you waited a bit, now it's on Netflix, ad-free. Er, unless you have the Netflix ad plan, that is. Sullivan's Crossing has found immense, surprising success on Netflix, another licensed series to do so, but this doesn't happen all that often. If you're thinking that getting big on Netflix meant a greenlight for season 4, you'd be half right. There is a season 4 coming, but the original station it aired on, Canada's CTV, confirmed that months ago, before it even showed up on Netflix and performed this well. When's the Sullivan's Crossing Season 4 release date? Right now, we just have a year estimate as to when Sullivan's Crossing season 3 is out, 2026. But we can look at the past seasons of the show, they are almost exactly just a year apart, like the good old days of TV. So if we're going by that metric, it should be around March or April of 2026 that season 4 is out. The show airs weekly, and should end in June, and then a few months after that, it will likely be added to Netflix. Season 3 ended in June 2025, now it's August 2025. So, August 2026 is the best bet for the Netflix release date. As for how season 3 of Sullivan's Crossing ends (spoilers follow) we can see where things are likely heading in season 4 as various storylines progress and cliffhangers are resolved: 'While everyone prepares for the grand opening of Rob's (Reid Price) new restaurant, Frank watches over Edna (Andrea Menard) as she recovers at home; Cal (Murray) finally makes the decision to confront Maggie (Kohan) with his concerns as Rafe (Dakota Taylor) tries to get Sydney (Lindura) to listen to how he feels; Jacob (Joel Oulette) rushes things with Lola (Amalia Williamson) making her uncomfortable; Sully (Patterson) gets a surprise visitor who helps him realize he needs to take a new direction; and Maggie finally reconciles her head with her heart, just as someone from her past arrives with a shocking revelation.' So, it's going to be a year, but in the current landscape of streaming TV, that's really not so bad. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram.
