Love Actually and Eastenders actor Jo Bacon dies aged 72

Daily Record16-07-2025
Jo Bacon played Natalie's mum in the 2003 film Love Actually and has died at the age of 72.
Heartfelt tributes have poured in following the passing of a 'brilliant' actress who featured in one of Love Actually's most memorable scenes.

Jo Bacon portrayed Natalie's mum in the beloved 2003 romantic comedy, appearing in the unforgettable moment when Hugh Grant's Prime Minister arrives at their south London home searching for Martine McCutcheon's character.

The 72 year old performer, who was cherished throughout the television, theatre, film and ballet communities, also graced screens in EastEnders, Casualty, The Bill, Pie in the Sky, Little Britain, A Touch of Frost and New Tricks.

She earned critical acclaim for her role as Jackie in Breeders, playing the mother of Martin Freeman's character Paul.
Freeman joined numerous fellow actors in paying final respects to Bacon at her funeral service yesterday, reports the Mirror.
Celebrant Jo Moore reflected: "Jo's talent as an actor was a gift that she shared with the world. On stage and on screen, she brought us joy, laughter, and inspiration, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of everyone she reached.
"She was a woman of many talents and facets, and I would like to share with you a description of Jo, given by Gill, one of her lifelong friends: 'Jo's life was a wonderful, elaborate, kaleidoscope with different sections for each of her passions and only Jo was at the centre and could see and enjoy the whole kaleidoscope. In many ways Jo was a contradiction - a flamboyant extrovert, a superb wit, a natural communicator and yet, at the same time, an introspective loner.
"We all thought we knew her so well but, in reality, we each only knew and loved one aspect of her.'"

Following her cancer diagnosis in January, Jo herself reflected: "I have had a brilliant life. I have been so lucky to do the things I have done and to have met the wonderful people I have met. I have no regrets."
Patrick Roberts, a close friend of Bacon's, spoke with fervour as he remembered her zest for life, her passion for travel, and her love for animals. The congregation experienced a rollercoaster of emotions, from applause to laughter and tears, as they listened to various heartfelt stories about her life and career.

Barry Bowen, another friend, fondly recalled: "The thing I remember and love most about her I suspected in those early local days and it proved true in spades as the years went by.... her unfailing loyalty to her friends. If Jo had wanted to be anything other than the humble person we all knew, she was so well equipped to be a name dropper. Sharing stages and studios with the likes of Redgrave, O'Toole, Mirren, Bates, Rickman, Grant, Firth and Freeman were a silent compliment to her."
The attendees were reminded of how Bacon began her acting journey in the 1960s and 1970s with amateur dramatic societies in Hatfield Heath and Harlow, Essex. Despite her growing success, Bacon remained a dedicated supporter of local arts, frequently attending performances by the Heath Players, Harlow Ballet, and at the Harlow Playhouse, close to her home in Hatfield Heath.
Her coffin was carried out of the GreenAcres Epping venue to the tune of the Rolling Stones' Honky Tonk Women. A passionate animal enthusiast, especially dogs, she requested that donations be made to a local charity named Mutts in Distress.

Kerry Katona and Katie Price 'desperate' for daughters to do I'm A Celebrity

Kerry Katona and Katie Price appear to be following in Kris Jenner's footsteps and have already mapped out their daughters' rise to fame with a huge reality show Katie Price and Kerry Katona could soon find themselves replacing original momager, Kris Jenner. Former singer Kerry and her glamour model icon Katie have appeared on dozens of reality shows over the course of their careers and now, they've set their sights on their daughters following in their showbiz footsteps. ‌ It comes as no surprise that the daughters of two of the most recognisable women in the nation have allegedly been flooded with offers in the past to appear on various shows and now, Kerry admits it's something she's keen for her daughter Heidi to do, alongside Katie's daughter, Princess Andre. ‌ While Princess has bagged her own reality show, which Katie has spoken openly about, Kerry admits that she would love to see Heidi and Princess appear alongside one another on a completely different show. It comes after Katie Price worries fans with appearance in family photo after explaining weight loss. ‌ The two stars met on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in 2004, of which Kerry won, she hopes that the pair will one day find themselves in the jungle together. "I'm desperate for Princess and Heidi to do the Jungle together, imagine," Kerry said. In a joint interview with The Sun, Katie added: "I always say Love Island. Heidi and Princess need to do it together." ‌ Kerry commented: "The way I see it is, forget management, forget fame, what an amazing memory, what an amazing adventure. So I think if Heidi goes to Love Island for three months and has the best time then that's amazing." Meanwhile, she added that while people may be quick to criticise their children for being "nepo-babies", she admits that everybody has a contact, somewhere. She commented: "I can open a door for you. Whether you get through that door and you stay through it, that's on your own f****ing merit. You don't see Brooklyn Beckham playing f****ing football, because he's sh*t." But Heidi isn't the only one of Kerry's daughters that she's encouraging to appear on Love Island. ‌ Speaking to the Mirror, she previously said: "Do Love Island make a sh*t load of money, Lilly!" Meanwhile, Katie has opened up about Princess's upcoming show. Speaking to her sister, Sophie, on their podcast, she said: "Princess is now officially an adult so mummy and Princess can now go out together. If certain people would let her be seen with me. "Everyone knows she's doing this documentary - and I'm not in it. Certain people don't think it's good for Princess to be seen with me. Certain people that used to look after me." ‌ "You aren't on brand, Katie. You are too risky, Katie, that's why," her sister retorted. "It's pathetic. I'm her mother," Katie snapped. "It's so sad," she lamented. "When certain people who used to look after me are now looking after..." Katie was then cut off by her sister Sophie, who encouraged her to "save it for another day." The MailOnline reported that dad Peter Andre and his wife Emily will be featured but Katie will be taking a back seat. A source said: "Katie will not be in Princess's show, the decision has been made and it's final. Princess loves her mum, and they have a great relationship, but the show is all about her work and home life. "Television bosses were adamant that nothing was to be 'staged' to include Katie as it would not be a real and truthful insight into her life." The show will follow Princess up to her turning 18 in June.
