BEST Bus Catches Fire at Kannamwar Nagar in Vikhroli, Nobody Injured; Third Fire Incident in Five Months

Time of India4 hours ago
Mumbai: A wet lease BEST bus caught fire in Vikhroli West on Friday afternoon, causing panic among passengers. However, nobody was injured as the commuters were safely rescued by BEST staff before the arrival of the fire brigade.
A senior official said that the fire was due to a short circuit. "The wet lease bus caught fire due to a wiring issue," he said. The bus was ferrying passengers on route number 397. "While the bus was going from Vikhroli station towards Kannamwar Nagar, at around 3.25 pm near Pragati Vidyalaya, the wiring in the bus cabin caught fire, causing the cabin to be completely filled with smoke. The bus driver and conductor showed presence of mind and controlled the fire using the fire extinguisher equipment in the bus and also informed the fire brigade about the incident.
They also alerted the passengers on time and they got down," an official said. No one was injured in this incident.
The incident came a month after another BEST bus—a double-decker—caught fire. In that incident, nobody was injured, and prima facie, it was found that there was friction between the loose manhole cover (on the road) and the battery area underneath the bus.

Thousands of devotees bring Narve to life on Janmashtami

Bicholim: Come Janmashtami, thousands of devotees throng the hamlet of Narve in the Bicholim taluka to pray at the Masan Devi temple and at the tirthsthan (Panchganga). While several travel to the place to perform rituals, palanquins of gods and goddesses are also an attraction. The confluence of five rivers — Bicholim, Valvonti, Zuari, Khandepar and Mhadei — known as 'Panchganga', is where devotees perform rituals and offer flowers to their ancestors on the occasion of Janmashtami. Besides, the 'yajnopavit' (sacred thread worn by men) is also released into the water on this day. 'Devotees come to the banks of the Panchganga to release the yajnopavit along with bel and tulsi leaves. They then visit Kaloba (the folk deity), whose shrine is in the vicinity,' said Rama Mayekar, a local devotee. On Janmashtami, palanquins of different gods and goddesses from Bicholim and Mayem are brought to this place at Narve. Ravlu Gaonkar of Shri Shantadurga Devasthan, Bicholim, said, 'We have been bringing the palanquin of goddess Shantadurga here for the past many years.' Ashtami is one of the few days in a year that the temple of Masan Devi is thrown open to the members of the public. Couples visit this temple to pray for the gift of a child. The area also has a fair set up for Janmashtami. The stalls sell traditional items, like the 'paat' (wooden seat used for performing religious rituals) and 'matoli', used for Ganesh Chaturthi celebration. Roasted grams are considered to be a speciality. The Janmashtami celebrations here end before sunset, with the palanquins returning to their respective temples and the fair stalls shutting shops by 6pm. Devotees visiting Narve for Janmashtami have urged govt authorities concerned to construct steps to reach the palanquin spot. Last year, state govt had constructed a permanent shed to station the palanquins, but the access road to the spot where the palanquins are is unpaved and tends to get slippery during the rains. 'The route is difficult, specially for the elderly. Many return without taking 'darshan' of palanquins,' said Bhagarathi Vaigankar, a devotee. Illegal shops, ramps & sheds razed as Gurgaon intensifies crackdown on squatters

Gurgaon: Anti-encroachment action has surged fourfold in the city following a review meeting of district town planning committee (DTCP) on Aug 7. Five joint MCG–GMDA teams conducted simultaneous three-day drives at key locations, including Church Gate, Subhash Chowk, Candor 47 and Nirwana Country. Illegal extensions, roadside stalls, and structures were dismantled, clearing key stretches for public use. Another major cleanup on Dhanwapur–Surya Vihar Road cleared illegal sheds, extended ramps from 100 shops, and dozens of handcarts, some allegedly linked to liquor and drug peddling, earning public praise for improving women's safety. Similar crackdowns happened at Chowk–Krishna Chowk in Sector 5, Mayfield Garden, and the old Bus Stand area. Announcements were made in Sector 23 market, Dhanwapur Road, Sector 4 market, Jyoti Park Road, and along Bhondsi–Sohna Road, asking shopkeepers and vendors to voluntarily vacate encroached public spaces or face demolition. Officials said the focus will be on consistent and visible action to prevent repeat violations. Residents have welcomed the move. "This road had been taken over by makeshift stalls for years. Now, I can walk freely, without weaving through traffic," said Ramesh Kumar, a shopkeeper in Dhanwapur. With footpaths being cleared and traffic bottlenecks easing, authorities hope to maintain the momentum beyond Sept, making Gurgaon's public spaces more accessible." HC quashes 2 maintenance cases under sr citizens act

Panaji: The high court of Bombay at Goa quashed and set aside two cases under the Maintenance and Welfare of Senior Citizens Act. The cases were subsequently remanded back to maintenance tribunals at the deputy collector level, with a direction that they appoint a conciliation officer to mediate a settlement between the parents and their children. Until the cases are resolved, the HC directed the sons in both cases to continue paying monthly maintenance of Rs 10,000 to their parents. In the first case, a 49-year-old son from Panaji went to the HC challenging the order of the maintenance tribunal that directed him to vacate his parents' home within six months and pay them Rs 10,000 per month as maintenance. In the second case, an only son approached the HC challenging the order delivered by the maintenance tribunal that directed him to pay his father Rs 10,000 per month, and restricting him and his wife from interfering with the cultivation of his father's agricultural fields in Bicholim. Justice Valmiki Menezes held that no inquiry was conducted by the maintenance tribunals in both cases and that the orders were passed without referring the parties to a conciliation officer to attempt to mediate a solution to the disputes. The HC directed that conciliation officers under the act be appointed in both cases to attempt to mediate between the parties. If conciliation fails, the maintenance tribunal shall proceed to conduct an inquiry into the matter, if necessary, record evidence, and pass its order, the court held.
