Eddington: conspiracy and dread in small-town USA
A shocking and provocative tale of conspiracies and small-town politics gone wild as director Ari Aster continues to tackle subjects that send a shiver down the viewer's spine. This time, it's the year 2020. It's May 2020 in the New Mexico town of Eddington, we meet Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix). A hot-headed reactionary, he lives with his wife, Louise (Emma Stone), who barely acknowledges her husband's struggles, and his deluded mother-in-law, Dawn (Deirdre O'Connell), who has fallen far down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole thanks to Facebook. While not a COVID denier, and despite being asthmatic, Joe is frustrated with the mask mandates that have just reached his sleepy apparently COVID free town. Joe pushes back, creating further friction with the progressive but smug mayor, Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal), Louise's slick and self-satisfied ex. Tensions escalate when Joe decides to run against the unopposed Ted for mayor. To do so, he embraces being the anti-Ted, anti-lockdown, anti-government, and pro-conspiracy. The film's targets shift often. Both sides of the American cultural divide are skewered. Dawn is shown clutching her printed-out sheets of unsubstantiated theories, while Austin Butler's creepy YouTube guru a man who has all the answers, is clearly predatory. But the other side doesn't escape either. We meet cops who take offense at Joe not wearing a mask while sitting alone in his car in the middle of the desert, or the virtue-signalling young white activists who tie themselves in knots apologizing for speaking truth to power, all while barely noticing the rapidly advancing plans for a resource guzzling data centre just outside town, something the supposedly eco-conscious mayor is quietly supporting. The mayoral race quickly turns dirty, ideologies clash, and the political and cultural divide widens in a town that might be better off cut off from the rest of America and its problems. Eddington is a town on the brink, and its sheriff and mayoral candidate's mental health is hanging by a thread. If someone wanted to understand how America got to where it is today, pointing them towards this film would be an excellent start. Bound to be just as divisive as his previous Beau is Afraid, Ari Aster's Eddington runs a little too long and isn't as slick or focused as his previous projects, but it's still well worth your time (as was Beau is Afraid). It's a razor-sharp satire with genuinely shocking moments and pitch-perfect performances, especially from Phoenix, whose volatile sheriff is a joy to watch.

She was asked about Disney+, who bankrolled the last two series, and whether the Beeb would be willing to keep the show going if they didn't renew their arrangement. Katie replied: 'Absolutely. Any Whovians out there, rest assured, Doctor Who is going nowhere. 'Disney has been a great partnership, but going forward with or without Disney Doctor Who will still be on the BBC.' Advertisement But when pressed on when they'd confirm any decision she replied: 'Soon, don't worry. "The Tardis is going nowhere. Lindsay Salt will be on soon so she can talk a bit more about that.' Then when Lindsay, the BBC's director of drama, arrived on the same stage, she was equally vague about the long-running show. A massive question mark now hangs over the future of the show and whether the Beeb's 'commitment' and determination to keep it 'with the BBC' actually means they'll order a new series any time soon. It all comes after Ncuti's departure amid plunging viewing figures, which some fans have blamed on the increasingly woke storylines under the tenure of Russell T Davies. PLOPPER FUNNY, DANNY ATTENDEES at the Edinburgh TV Festival like to think they are a sophisticated bunch, but the biggest laugh heard at the event proved otherwise. Sky unveiled a clip of its upcoming show, The Dyers' Caravan Park, which sees Danny Dyer and daughter Dani try their hand at running a holiday park they have invested in. The first thing they are seen doing is organising a meeting with the residents. During the chat, complaints are raised that the park's swimming pool had people doing number twos in there. "Me and my brother used to have a bath and I s**t in it and I pushed it up his end of the bath, because I didn't want to get in trouble.' You had to be there. Bizbit QUOTE of the day came, predictably, from hilarious ITV boss Kevin Lygo, who was asked at the TV festival how he felt about making shows for young people. He was trying to say it could be a venture that could backfire, but instead said: 'You can get in terrible trouble chasing teenagers.' NO LAUGHING MATTER JUST like the contestants have to stifle a giggle, try to contain your excitement as Prime Video gives us a first look at the new line-up for Last One Laughing. Advertisement The breakout hit show has brought together a top-class collection of comedians for the second series, which arguably tops the first run. 3 The cast of Last One Laughing series two Bob Mortimer, who triumphed last time round, is back along with hosts Jimmy Carr and Roisin Conaty. All Bob had to do to win was spend time with ten of the funniest men and women in Britain and not even smile, let alone laugh. Which is no mean feat. Advertisement Prime Video promises that the new season, which airs next year, will once again be 'packed with comedy cameos, format twists and surprises designed to elicit laughs from both players and viewers alike'.

It's a man-made commuter city at the end of the day. Lisa Vanderpump 'pushed out' of Vanderpump Rules as producers attempt to 'minimize' her involvement with filming Lisa then shot to fame as part of the original cast of Beverly Hills housewives, and enjoyed success as the show's breakout star from 2010 to 2019, but left the show after a series of on-camera spats with the other wives.
