RBI moots apps for feature phones to deepen financial inclusion
Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India has urged banks and finance companies to launch low-bandwidth apps and flexible products that can reach remote parts of India and underserved populations, as part of its drive towards 100% financial inclusion, said people privy to the development. The RBI has also asked banks and finance companies to ensure that the new apps and digital products have features to prevent cyber fraud.
The central bank is urging banks to design digital products that meet the needs of customers using feature phones with low bandwidth since connectivity is a major roadblock in remote parts of the country.
All retail banking products are currently available through mobile applications on smartphones. However, not all services are made available on feature phones. The RBI is aiming to bridge this gap.
Separately, the RBI said it is planning to review regulations on internet and mobile banking for all banks.
Upon taking charge as the RBI governor, Sanjay Malhotra, had started financial inclusion, which implies making financial services available to all citizens, especially the underserved population. The Reserve Bank's Financial Inclusion Index (FI-Index), which measures the extent of financial inclusion in the country, improved from 60.1 in March 2023 to 64.2 in March 2024, according to latest data published by the central bank. The index covers access, usage and quality of financial services. The RBI plans to review the index in FY26.

The RBI is planning to conduct a survey on the usage of digital payments, it said in its latest annual report. The survey will be done to "understand transaction behaviour and challenges faced by users, thereby facilitating evidence-based decision making towards enhancing financial inclusion and making payment systems more effective".
The RBI is also encouraging banks to design products that meet customer needs such as flexible repayments, variable savings and seasonally adapted services-enhancing access, usage, and service quality, RBI deputy governor M Rajeshwar Rao said early this month.

KYC update pain may ease as RBI rejigs rules
Representative image MUMBAI: RBI has eased KYC norms to simplify compliance and to make it easier for individuals to access long-dormant bank accounts and unclaimed deposits, many of which have remained untouched for over 10 years. The move, announced through a circular on June 12, aims to ensure that anti-money laundering rules do not hinder rightful account holders from accessing their savings particularly in accounts opened to receive government benefits. RBI has asked banks to give three advance intimations prior to the due date of periodic updation of KYC and at least one intimation must be by letter. In the past customers have complained that digital alerts have been missed and they only come to know when they are not able to transact on their account. The central bank has also asked banks to allow KYC updates at any branch, irrespective of where the account was opened. It has also permitted the use of Aadhaar OTP and video-based customer identification for periodic KYC updates. Business correspondents, especially in rural areas, can now assist customers with reactivating inoperative accounts and completing KYC requirements. According to RBI, banks must take an 'empathetic view' when dealing with low-risk customers seeking to update their KYC or reactivate dormant accounts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Customers with no changes in personal information, or only a change of address, can now submit self-declarations through digital or offline channels, without the need for additional documents. Banks have been directed to organise KYC update camps, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, and to launch focused campaigns in branches with a high number of pending updates. These efforts are particularly targeted at accounts linked to direct benefit transfers and Jan Dhan accounts, where KYC compliance has lagged. According to Anand Bajaj, founder MD & CEO of PayNeary, allowing business correspondents to collect self-declarations and assist with biometric-based e-KYC, will allow banks to efficiently reach customers in areas with limited branches. At 2.8%, retail inflation eases to over 6-year low
Representative image (Picture credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: Retail inflation plummeted to a 75-month low in May as food prices eased sharply. It is expected to moderate further in June, which may prompt the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to hit a pause in its rate-cutting cycle after undertaking a "jumbo" cut earlier this month to support growth in the face of easing price pressures. Data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on Thursday showed retail inflation, as measured by the consumer price index (CPI), slumped to 2.8% in May, below the 3.2% in April. It is the lowest year-on-year inflation after February 2019 and is the fourth consecutive month when it has stayed below the RBI's 4% target. Food inflation eased to nearly 1% in May, with a sharp decline of 79 basis points during the month compared to April. Food inflation in May is the lowest since October 2021. Rural inflation was at 2.6% in May, while urban inflation was at 3.1%. The data showed vegetable prices fell 13.7% in May, while pulses and products declined 8.2% during the month, and spices fell 2.8% in May. "While till Q3 FY26, we expect CPI inflation to remain less than 4%, it may only increase in the last quarter of the current fiscal. We expect average CPI inflation for FY26 would be around 3.3%-3.5% (RBI: 3.7%) as against FY25 average of 4.6%," said Soumya Kanti Ghosh, group chief economic adviser at SBI. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Given this benign inflation expectations on the back of a 50 basis points rate cut recently in June policy, the current focus of RBI is to support the momentum in capital formation for more durable growth. We expect a pause in rate action here onwards till the Dec 2025 policy, though a lot will depend upon incoming data," said Ghosh in a note. Bank of Maharashtra cuts retail loan rates by up to 50 bps post RBI move
Bank of Maharashtra on Thursday announced a reduction of up to 50 basis points in interest rates on retail loans, including home, car, education and other loans linked to the Repo Linked Lending Rate (RLLR). According to the bank, the revised rates are effective from 10 June and align with the recent rate reduction by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The bank stated that home loans will now start at 7.35 per cent and car loans at 7.7 per cent. 'This benefit of reduced interest rates reflects the bank's commitment to offer the best financing solutions to all its customers and help them fulfil their dreams,' the bank said. It added, 'In the current interest rate landscape, the bank is making retail loans cheaper to bring in cheer among its customers.' Banking industry Bank of Baroda has also reduced its Marginal Cost of Funds Based Lending Rate (MCLR) by 5 basis points across various tenors ranging from one month to one year. Additionally, three other public sector banks—Canara Bank, Union Bank of India and Indian Overseas Bank—have cut their External Benchmark Lending Rates (EBLR) by 50 basis points. Canara Bank and Union Bank's repo-linked lending rates now stand at 8.25 per cent, while Indian Overseas Bank's RLLR is 8.35 per cent. These rates apply to retail loans, including home, vehicle and personal loans, as well as loans extended to the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector. These rate adjustments follow the Reserve Bank of India's decision on Friday to reduce the benchmark repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5 per cent. The six-member Monetary Policy Committee, chaired by Governor Sanjay Malhotra, voted five to one in favour of the rate cut. The RBI also lowered the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by 100 basis points to 3 per cent in phases, which is expected to inject ₹2.5 lakh crore into the banking system. Inflation data India's retail inflation eased to 2.82 per cent in May from 3.16 per cent in April, primarily due to a slower pace of food price increases, according to government data released on Thursday. In rural areas, headline inflation fell to 2.59 per cent in May from 2.92 per cent in April, while food inflation based on the Consumer Food Price Index declined to 0.95 per cent from 1.85 per cent during the same period.
