2031 Ryder Cup to be hosted in Girona, Spain, says Catalan golf federation

Yahoo18-07-2025
Barcelona, Spain (AP) — The 2031 Ryder Cup will be held in northeastern Spain, the president of the Catalan golf federation has told The Associated Press.
Ramon Nogué, president of the Catalan golf federation, told the AP by phone Friday that 'next week it will be official' that Girona will be announced as the host of the golfing event between the best male players of Europe and the United States.
The choice of Girona's Camiral Golf course was first reported by Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.
'Any announcement in relation to future editions of the Ryder Cup will be made in due course,' Ryder Cup Europe said.
The Camiral resort, which was previously called PGA Catalunya, has hosted European Tour events and the Spanish Open.
It has been owned by Irish businessman Denis O'Brien since 2008. Irish media have reported that O'Brien has invested tens of millions of euros in upgrades to the courses and the hotel, as well as accommodation on the property.
This will be the second time for Spain to host the Cup after Valderrama in 1997, and just the fourth time it will be played in continental Europe after Le Golf National outside Paris in 2018 and Marco Simone outside Rome in 2023.
The Ryder Cup is closely tied to Spain because of European team stalwarts Seve Ballesteros, José María Olazábal and Sergio García.
This year's Ryder Cup will be held at Bethpage Black in New York in September. The next one staged in Europe is in 2027 at Adare Manor in Ireland.

Real Madrid identify Manchester City forward as potential Vinicius Junior replacement

Manchester City may once again find one of their primary superstar names thrust into a transfer saga concerning Real Madrid, amid new reports from Spain. While Kylian Mbappé's long-anticipated move to the Santiago Bernabéu finally materialised, the next Galáctico reshuffle could already be brewing as reports in Spain suggest Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez is weighing up the long-term future of his attacking line. Once again, Manchester City's Erling Haaland is being viewed as the ideal figure to spearhead that vision with fresh speculation arriving just six months after the Norwegian committed his long-term future to Manchester City by signing a bumper new contract. The Norway international striker extended his stay at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2034, a deal that erased a previously existing release clause and would see him remain with the club until his 34th birthday. At the time of signing, Haaland expressed clear satisfaction with life under Pep Guardiola and spoke glowingly about the culture and support at the club. 'I am really happy to have signed my new contract and to be able to look forward to spending even more time at this great club,' Haaland said back in January. 'Manchester City is a special club, full of fantastic people with amazing supporters and it's the type of environment that helps bring the best out of everybody.' The club's now-former sporting director Txiki Begiristain echoed that sentiment, stating that the length of the new deal was a testament to both the club's belief in the player and Erling Haaland's dedication to City. However now, according to the information of Spanish outlet SER – as relayed by Mundo Deportivo – Erling Haaland would be Florentino Perez's 'dream' to pair with Kylian Mbappe in attack for Real Madrid in the even of a transfer for Vinicius Junior. Saudi Arabia are said to be the main suitor for Vinicius and have sounded out the Brazilian's entourage for months, with talk of a €1 billion per season salary for the player and a €350 million transfer fee for Real Madrid. However, while Real Madrid are said to be aware of the interest from the Middle-East, there has been no firm offer from Saudi Arabia to sign Vinicius so far. While a sensational offer from Saudi Arabia for Vinicius has yet to materialise in formal terms, the scale of figures reportedly being floated will likely draw the attention of Real Madrid's leadership. The departure of Vinicius, were it to occur, would require a statement-level response from Pérez and co., and Erling Haaland is considered the ultimate prize. But any pursuit of the Norwegian hitman would face immediate and firm resistance from Manchester City, where he is central to their long-term vision, both on and off the pitch. His status as a global commercial icon, his age, and his extraordinary scoring record make him one of the few truly untouchable figures in the squad. Furthermore, with Pep Guardiola under contract until 2027 and City continuing to refresh their squad around a young core, the idea of losing Haaland any time soon seems almost incompatible with the club's broader ambitions. Internally, there is belief that the January contract renewal significantly reduced the vulnerability around Haaland's future, particularly by removing the release clause that would have allowed Spanish clubs to trigger negotiations. Looking ahead, Manchester City are unlikely to entertain any offer, regardless of size, unless Haaland himself were to initiate discussions over a departure – something he has shown no intention of doing. However, Real Madrid's admiration will likely persist, especially if the Saudi interest in Vinicius becomes more concrete in the months ahead.

INEOS miss out on instant £25-30m boost as Man United star rejects two transfer proposals, he's biding his time

Antony has rebuffed two offers to return to his native Brazil as he awaits his desired move to Real Betis. Indeed, the Manchester United outcast has been longing to repay Manuel Pellegrini's faith by signing for Betis on a long-term basis, following his stellar half-season loan spell from January to May this year. Unfortunately for both him and the Spanish outfit, a deal looks highly unlikely to be agreed given United only want to sanction his exit on a permanent basis, with Betis eyeing another temporary agreement for the duration of 2025/2026. Why Antony is uninterested in a move to Brazil this summer (Photo by) Antony is so set on a return to the Villamarin Stadium that he reportedly rejected a lucrative proposal from Como a few weeks back, before now turning down the chance to ply his trade in the Brazilian top-flight; Antenados claims he was contacted by both Botafogo and Sao Paulo to gauge the feasibility of him leaving Europe for a surprise homecoming this summer, to which he declined the opportunity. The 25-year-old spent 10 years working his way through the ranks with Sao Paulo before departing for Ajax in 2020. He plyed his trade in Amsterdam for only two years before United forked out a whopping £86 million to add him to Erik ten Hag's ranks in September 2022. How Antony fared for Betis last season It goes without saying that his Red Devils tenure has left a lot to be desired, but Antony did enjoy a new lease of life in Spain last term, recording nine goals and five assists in 26 appearances across all competitions for Los Verdiblancos. He played an integral role in Betis reaching the UEFA Conference League final and securing Europa League qualification via a sixth-placed La Liga finish, making it no surprise that United are standing firm in their demands. Stats – Breaking down Barcelona debutant's performance against Vissel Kobe

Barcelona's summer signing, Roony Bardghji, announced himself in style during his debut against Vissel Kobe, scoring a well-taken goal in a 3-1 victory. The 19-year-old winger, brought in with plenty of expectation, played just 45 minutes but was one of the standout performers in what was a convincing display by the Catalans. Bardghji had 30 touches during his time on the pitch and completed 16 out of 19 passes, recording an impressive 84% accuracy. He managed three shots on goal, created one clear chance, and completed both of his dribble attempts, making him the most successful dribbler of the match. He also played two passes into the final third, made one clearance, recovered the ball once, and won two of his three ground duels. Influential against Vissel Kobe From the moment he stepped onto the field, the youngster looked confident and involved. Roony Bardghji made quite an impact. (Photo by) He had two early chances to get on the scoresheet, first with a powerful strike from outside the area that was blocked by a defender, and then with a close-range attempt following a smart pass from Marcus Rashford, but the finish narrowly missed. Still, Bardghji showed hunger and maturity by not letting the missed opportunities affect his rhythm. His goal, when it finally came, was the result of an intelligent and composed move. Rashford played a perfectly weighted ball behind the defence for Robert Lewandowski, who used his experience to square the ball to Bardghji at the edge of the box. With remarkable composure for someone his age, the Swedish winger calmly slotted the ball into the bottom-right corner. Beyond the goal, Bardghji's energy, vision, and confidence on the ball gave Barcelona fans a glimpse of what he could offer this season. For a 19-year-old making his first appearance, it was a performance full of promise, and if this is just the beginning, Bardghji may prove to be one of the club's smartest acquisitions in recent years.
