The government Monday said 20% ethanol blended petrol does not have any negative impact on older vehicles Refuting media reports on the potential negative impact of e20 blended petrol on legacy vehicles, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas in a post on micro-blogging site 'X' said, 'These concerns, however, are largely unfounded and not supported by scientific evidence or expert analysis.' The government had mandated all vehicles manufactured in India to be E20 material compliant April 2023 onwards, and to be fully E20 compliant from April 2025.In it's post, the ministry elaborated international studies on the effect of using ethanol-petrol blends on mechanical, energy and environmental performance of vehicles through testing of both carbureted and fuel-injected vehicles every 10,000 km during their first 100,000 km showed statistically no significant differences in power and torque generated and fuel consumption.Material compatibility and drivability tests by Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) and Indian Oil Corporation (R&D) have confirmed that legacy vehicles also showed no significant variations, performance issues or abnormal wear-and-tear when operated with E20. 'Moreover, E20 fuel passed hot and cold startability tests without any engine damage', the ministry added in the statement. The ministry admitted ethanol, being lower in energy density than petrol, results in a marginal decrease in mileage - 1–2% for four-wheelers designed for #E10 and calibrated for #E20, and around 3–6% in others. However, it said, 'This marginal drop in efficiency can be further minimized through improved engine tuning and use of E20-compatible materials, which leading automobile manufacturers have already adopted.' In fact, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has confirmed that E20-compliant vehicles with upgraded components began rolling out from April 2023. Thus, the allegation that E20 leads to drastic drop in fuel efficiency is factually incorrect, the ministry said.As regards claims of material corrosion, the Petroleum Ministry said standards for E20, including corrosion inhibitors and compatible fuel system materials, are well established through BIS specifications and Automotive Industry Standards. Replacement of some rubber parts/ gaskets could be advised in certain older vehicles after prolonged use of say 20,000 to 30,000 kms. This replacement is inexpensive and easily done during regular servicing of the vehicle, the ministry said.Blending ethanol in petrol, a fossil fuel aslo helps in reducing CO2 emissions, the ministry said. 'Ethanol is increasingly being produced from not only sugarcane but also from surplus rice, maize, damaged foodgrains, and agricultural residues, especially under the push for second-generation (2G) biofuels. This makes ethanol blending not only technically viable, but environmentally sustainable as well', the ministry said. It cited a study on life cycle emissions of ethanol done by Niti Aayog which found that GHG emissions in case of sugarcane and maize based ethanol use is less by 65% and 50%, respectively, than that of petrol.Additionally, the Petroleum Ministry said entail helps improve ride quality and vehicle performance: Ethanol has a higher octane number than Petrol (~108.5 vs. 84.4) which implies that ethanol-petrol blends have a higher octane number than traditional petrol. Therefore, the use of ethanol becomes a partial alternative for providing high-octane fuels (~95), required for modern high compression ratio engines providing a better ride quality, the ministry explained.E20 blending, the ministry said, also 'significantly strengthens India's energy security by reducing dependence on crude oil imports'. Since, 2014-15 India has already saved more than Rs. 1.40 lakh crore in foreign exchange through petrol substitution. Ethanol blending supports the rural economy, with expeditious payment of over Rs. 1.20 lakh crore to farmers, thereby creating income and employment opportunities in the agricultural and biofuel sectors. #E20 blending has helped India reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 700 lakh tonnes, contributing to climate change goals. Finally, the ministry added, claims that this transition to E20 is abrupt or poorly communicated does not align with the detailed rollout plans outlined in the Government of India's Roadmap for Ethanol Blending in India 2020–25, available on the websites of #MoPNG and @NitiAayog since 2021. The implementation of E20 in India has followed a phased and widely consulted approach, involving coordination between ministries, vehicle manufacturers, fuel retailers, standards agencies etc. 'Thus, the narrative that #EthanolBlending in Petrol is harming vehicles or causing undue hardship to consumers is not based on real facts and lacks technical foundation', it held.

Make in India booster: Optiemus signs licensing agreement with American Corning for screen protectors
Optiemus partners Corning to make tempered glass screen protectors in India NEW DELHI: Top American specialty glass and technology company Corning is expanding its business in India as it ties up with local contract manufacturer Optiemus through a trademark and licensing agreement for screen protectors. The company is also close to the start of production of finished cover glass for smartphones in India, this time in a Rs 1,000 crore joint venture again with Optiemus. The factory is likely to begin production from December this year, and this will be the first time when it directly supplies finished cover glass from India rather than importing it. The customers for the cover glass are likely to include companies such as Apple, Samsung and the ubiquitous Chinese makers who account for a majority of smartphone sales in the country. Ashok Gupta, chairman of Optiemus Infra, said the company will be importing glass sheets into India for the tempered glass, and these will thereafter be sold in the country under the Rhinotech brand after processing as per Corning's techniques and mandates. The domestic market for tempered glass screen protectors is expected to see annual sales of 400 million pieces this year with an estimated retail value of Rs 20,000 crore. Most of these these are currently sold through the unorganized sector after imports from China and Vietnam. Sudhir Pillai, MD of Corning in India, said the screen protectors will carry the 'Engineered by Corning' trademark. 'We believe that this development will support India's growing need for providing screen protectors for the mobile consumer electronics industry.' Sources said the govt is concerned over the import of 'low quality but high revenue' tempered glass into India. 'BIS standards for setting quality standards for screen protectors have been announced and will need to be implemented over the next few months. This will lead to higher production of tempered glass within India which is critical as its volumes and turnover have been going up with each passing year,' a senior official of the IT Ministry said. Corning's expansion in India particularly comes at a time when the govt pushes the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India programme for having self-sustainability in the supply chain ecosystem. The company's key push in the mobile manufacturing ecosystem will come in after it starts the finished cover glass manufacturing at Chennai, Pillai said. Gupta said that Optiemus will initially expand the screen protector business in India, before looking at exporting them to locations such as the Middle East, and Europe. 'We will be expanding production as we move from here, and are looking at a strong play in India and beyond.' E20 fuel transition leaves Indian car owners in dilemma. Everything to know
India has transitioned to the 20 per cent ethanol-blended petrol, popularly known as E20. The government has claimed that this transition took place five years ahead of the original deadline of 2030. While the government claims this transition will reduce vehicular pollution significantly and cut oil import bills, the car owners are worried that the use of E20 petrol will affect the vehicles and their performance significantly. A large number of car and two-wheeler owners in India are concerned about the use of E20 fuel in their vehicles. Social media has been abuzz over the last few days, claiming that ethanol-blended fuel will reduce fuel efficiency, lead to corrosion of the engine parts, and damage several other critical parts of the vehicles. However, the government is claiming that these claims are baseless. Many older car owners whose vehicles are built before April 2023, have been reporting mileage drops. They worry that in the long run, the E20 fuel is going to negatively impact their vehicle's engine health. While many car owners on social media have been claiming up to 25 per cent loss of fuel efficiency using the E20 fuel, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has claimed a contradictory result. ARAI said that its controlled tests using the fuel show a much smaller dip of around one to six per cent. Also, it claims to have found no significant wear and tear even after extended use. The Indian government is relying heavily on this ARAI study to reassure the motorists. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) in multiple statements have claimed that the concerns about significant mileage drop and wear tear of critical vehicle components due to E20 fuel are baseless. However, that is not working well to address the concerns of the vehicle owners. Surprisingly, on the other hand, the car manufacturers have kept mum on this. While this situation has created quite a confusion, the vehicle owners have valid reason to be worried. E20 fuel: Can it harm your car or bike? The vehicle owners have legitimate reason to be worried about the use of E20 fuel in their vehicles. If your car or motorcycle or scooter is not certified for E20 petrol, It could accelerate wear and tear to certain components, which include damage to rubber or plastic parts, as well as corrosion to metal parts. However, the extent of damage depends on multiple factors, which includes age, technology etc. For example a BS3 or BS4 vehicle's vulnerability is much higher than a BS6 vehicle. Also, while using E20, the damage for an E10 compatible engine powered vehicle would be slower than an engine older than that. Additionally, it is not like that these damages will occur instantly. The damage to the critical parts will happen over time. On the other hand, people using E20 compatible engine powered vehicle, need not to worry, as their vehicle's engine and other components come complying with the moderation requied to use E20 fuel. Why E20 is bad for older vehicles? Ethanol degrades plastic and rubber components and the fundamental issue behind this is the corrosive nature of ethanol. It draws water because it is a hygroscopic substance, meaning it readily absorbs moisture from the atmosphere and holds onto water molecules. This allows ethanol to attract and absorb water from its surroundings, a process that can result in water contamination in fuel tanks, phase separation of petrol and ethanol, and potential damage the engine components. The increased ethanol content in E20 as compared to E10 in your fuel tank is capable of eating away plastic and rubber components that it comes in contact with. Thus, fuel lines, hoses and gaskets that are not compatible with E20 fuel will degrade over time. There would be problems like shrinkage or swelling and cracking from brittleness. If you think not driving much may help your car remain healthy, then you are wrong. Leaving higher-ethanol-blended petrol idle for long periods like weeks or months in the fuel tank of your car could be more damaging to your vehicle. Ethanol is a strong solvent, which can strip away the deposits in the fuel tank. This could result in clogged fuel filters and injectors, leading to poor engine performance and eventually increased maintenance costs owing to frequent visits to workshops and replacement of key parts. While the newer vehicles come equipped with components compatible of E20 fuel, vehicles manufactured between 2012 and 2023 are E10-compliant. The impact would be most on the vehicles manufactured before 2012, while the vehicles built before April 2023 may see less impact or over a longer period.
