
Wemyss Bay McCaskie's Butchers crowned world's haggis champion
The haggis triumph sealed a double for Mr Ovens, whose Scotch Pie – crafted to an award-winning recipe created by James Pirrie & Son of Dundee – was also crowned World Scotch Pie Champion at the Scotch Pie Awards.
Judges praised his haggis for being 'meaty, with a coarse but moist texture'. Its 'spicy peppery element', said to kick in at the end, made it 'a real champion'. Head judge Jon Wilkin said it 'couldn't be bettered'.
'I've spent years watching, tasting, tweaking and learning from others and I'm absolutely thrilled to be lifting the World Championship – it's a dream come true.'
The haggis was said to be 'meaty, course and moist' (Image: Scottish Craft Butchers) Mr Ovens' haggis won the Scottish Championship 10 years ago and the butcher, who owns McCaskie's Butchers at Wemyss Bay, fought off stiff opposition from 55 other producers to be named world champion this time around.
He refuses to part with the secrets of the recipe that makes his haggis a world-beater, but did allow a few key details to seep out.
The butcher said: 'Let's just say lamb fat probably helps sweeten the haggis and give it broader appeal,' he said, 'but after a lifetime spent perfecting the recipe, I'll keep the rest a secret.'
Nigel said the world title was a reward for his 24-strong team at Wemyss Bay who work to ensure that his haggis is enjoyed by customers across the UK.
'Haggis is no longer a Burns Night and burst product,' he said. 'It is a versatile foodstuff used to create a multitude of haggis products enjoyed throughout the year.
'It's one of Scotland's most iconic products and this World Haggis Championship title is the one that every butcher in the country aspires to.
'This means so much to me. It literally is a lifetime's achievement – I'm so honoured, so humbled and so thrilled.'
Head judge Mr Wilkin, Reader in Food Innovation and Knowledge Exchange at Abertay University, said McCaskie's haggis was the very best the world could showcase and a worthy winner of the championship.
'It's absolutely fantastic and I can't imagine there's a better haggis anywhere,' he said. 'The judges had a tough time because the standard this year was extraordinary, but Nigel's haggis had something special.
'It was meaty, with a coarse but moist texture, just the right amount of offal to flavour but not overwhelm, a really good salt level and a wonderful spicy peppery element that kicks in at the end – a real champion.'

'It was an honour to be part of such a prestigious event as both a judge and a sponsor,' she said. 'The standard was incredibly high and, although scoring was tight, we congratulate Nigel Ovens and McCaskie's on an outstanding product.
'Oats are an integral part of the haggis recipe and Grampian Oat Products was delighted to sponsor the World Championships again this year.'

Mr Ovens is only the second butcher ever to win the World Haggis Championship – a competition staged for the first time by Scottish Craft Butchers (SCB) in 2023 and held every two years.
SCB President, Laura Black of Coopers of Bellshill and previous holder of the title, said she was delighted to see the extremely high standard of entry for such an iconic dish and congratulated Nigel for reaching his lifetime goal.
'McCaskie's are well known for their multi-award-winning products and for Nigel to add this World Haggis Championship to his plaudits is just wonderful,' said Laura. 'There are few butchers who wouldn't want to add that accolade to their honours and we're thrilled for him.'

Nigel makes emotional plea to Phil after dramatic escape in EastEnders
There was chaos on Albert Square in tonight's EastEnders when David Peckham made an ambitious escape from his coop. They've been in Walford for less than a week and already David and his chicken friends have caused quite a stir among the neighbours. In tonight's episode, David got a taste for freedom when Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) left the coop unlocked after cleaning it, and the cockerel wandered off for a look around the Square. Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) was completely aghast when he realised David had gone and instantly warned Julie Bates (Karen Henthorn) that her beloved pet better not be in the house. They quickly established that David the rooster and taken his opportunity to do a runner, and Julie and Lexi Pearce (Isabella Brown) wasted no time in embarking on a rescue mission. Though Phil was certain it was a lost cause, Nigel pointed out that they should at least try, as it would break Julie's heart if something were to happen to David Peckham. After several hours, they still hadn't found him, and Phil was growing impatient. Nigel gave him permission to go home if he didn't want to carry on the search, but asserted that he wasn't going to give up. When things were looking completely hopeless, and Julie suggested accepting that David was gone, Nigel admitted how useless he felt, pointing out that now he couldn't be trusted to clean out the coop, there wasn't much more he could to help around the house. Julie was quick to soothe him, assigning him the job of picking what films they would watch in the evening, and he seemed somewhat mollified. Just then, a miracle occurred, as Lexi spotted David wandering towards Harry's Barn, where Yolande Trueman's (Angela Wynter) hen party was in full swing. David Peckham clearly thought he'd fit right in among the hens, though his sudden appearance in the underground bar caused chaos among the punters. As Julie and Nigel attempted to round him up, owner Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington) was furious at the intrusion. Back at home, with David safely back in his coop, Julie busied herself playing with Lexi, while Nigel had a private word with Phil. EastEnders confirms tragic update on legend in iPlayer release ahead of death

Tonight's EastEnders offered an update on a show legend, and it wasn't good news. Viewers have followed Nigel Bates' (Paul Bradley) dementia journey for several months now, since his return to Walford last winter. When Nigel arrived in Albert Square, he reconnected with old friend Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), but it took him a while to work up the courage to tell him why he was really back in London. Eventually, Nigel's young-onset dementia diagnosis was revealed, and he confessed that he had walked out on wife Julie Bates (Karen Henthorn) to save her from having to care for him as his condition deteriorated. However, in recent scenes, Nigel and Julie reconnected and, despite their differences, Phil allowed her to move into the house to prevent Nigel from having to choose between them. It's safe to say that Phil and Julie have yet to overcome said differences, and tonight's episode saw them take very different approaches to Nigel's illness. After a disagreement over Julie's chickens, the trio headed to the doctor's surgery for Nigel's assessment, where it was revealed that things were worse than they thought. Though the doctor commended his physical health, she explained that his short-term memory had rapidly deteriorated. However, it was clear that Julie was in denial, as she later insisted to Nigel that the doctor must have made a mistake and that everything would be fine. After Julie and Phil bickered once more, this time over what was for dinner, Nigel pulled Phil aside for a chat, where he admitted that he didn't want their living situation to make things difficult. Phil assured him that he would make it work, because even though he doesn't like Julie, he cares about Nigel and wants the best for him. He admitted that he didn't think Julie was good for Nigel, pointing out how she didn't seem to be taking things seriously and was acting like he didn't have a serious illness. When Julie overheard this, she was furious and demanded that Phil stop reminding Nigel about 'how bad his life is going to be'. However, she was taken aback when Phil revealed that Nigel already knew and that he had come to Walford intending to take his own life. How will Julie react to this devastating development, and will she and Phil be able to put their differences aside for Nigel's sake? Sally Rooney is the conscience of a generation

Forever dismissed – though mostly, it must be said, by Spectator columnists rather than literary critics – as an insipid, even annoying novelist, Rooney has declared she will be diverting the proceeds from the BBC adaptations of her novels to a terrorist organisation. Specifically, Palestine Action, that crew of grannies and poets that the police have been carrying into vans the past few weekends. And it sounds like she really means it; in fact she's practically daring the coppers to come and scoop her up too. Rooney has already furnished support for the legal campaign of the group's founders against the proscription, and will refuse to conduct any public events in the United Kingdom until the proscription of Palestine Action is ended. 'I could not in good conscience disguise or lie about my principles in public,' she said. Terrorism! Scoot along, Michel Houellebecq: Europe has a new literary controversialist. But, this being Sally Rooney, it is controversy of a precise, spare and considered sort. Rooney has made just five major political interventions in her public life. In 2018, she wrote an essay for the London Review of Books arguing in favour of legalising abortion in Ireland as the issue was put to a nationwide referendum. In 2021, she withdrew her novels from sale in Israel. In 2023, she published a long essay for the Irish Times condemning housing inequality; a year later, she wrote for the same paper another about the climate crisis and capitalism. And this year, she has made a series of statements about Israel's war in Gaza. It's not exactly a portfolio, especially compared to how writers used to behave, cheerleading wars, slamming world religions and marrying Marilyn Monroe. But Rooney has always been more of a mirror than a lamp, absorbing her world and her milieu into the tight quadrilaterals of love and conflict that define her stories. The same is true of her politics. If Rooney is not her generation's greatest writer, she might well be its most representative. And in her political priorities the same is true, a perspective built in a language of unsteady morality. The young Sally Rooney loved arguing. In 2013, representing Trinity College, Dublin, she placed first in the European University Debating Championships. She later travelled to India to compete in the World Championship. Adjudicators celebrated her as 'passionate' and 'forceful'. She argued about everything from why 'capitalism benefits the poor' to 'sexual violence, racial profiling, police brutality'. Winding up an essay reflecting on the experience, she wrote 'I was number one… I'm the best there is. And even if you beat me, I'm still the best.' If it was this Sally Rooney, the Sally Rooney who sounded like Mohammed Ali, who'd hit the big-time, you feel like there's no red carpet, no Sunday newspaper review, no local radio spot she'd have turned down. But, by her account, the result of her debating experience was a process of withdrawal. She'd begun to find the process of generating argument for the sake of it 'depressing and vaguely immoral'. 'After all, nothing in the outside world has changed as a result of my accumulation of debating accolades. I haven't contributed to anyone's understanding of anything, except maybe my own, and that only partially.' Rooney wrote this in 2015, not long before she was launched into fame by her Conversations With Friends and then confirmed as the leading novelist of her generation by Normal People. And while both books are full of characters who lapse into adolescent political overconfidence – 'I'm never going to get a job,' says Frances, who instead performs at spoken word poetry events – Rooney's people aren't 'forceful'. They're inclined to melancholy and stasis, and a room-temperature Marxism. They're hurt by others, often with their glum collaboration. When they seek out politics – or indeed religion – it's usually as a prop for some broader period of emotional crisis, rather than an expression of confident ideological priors. You can see it in their construction. Her op-eds read like the products of considered reading, thoughtful quotations noted and instructive percentage points gathered, all marshalled towards a conclusion that only feels secure when it arrives. Rhetorical questions are her handholds, testing her convictions against self-doubt and counter-argument. Her writing is free of metaphor or even polemic, proceeding in the purest, indecorous, communicative prose. This is the style of the debater – but it comes in service of critique not conviction. And sometimes even its conclusions are tempered: at the end of her climate essay, Rooney tip-toes towards advocating the abolition of property, before slipping back to the cry of social impotence, 'wondering how so many of us – including myself – could have been so quiescent, disorganised and cowardly when we knew that their lives were at stake'. These are the political instincts of a demographic which, like a pro-debater, have watched their political lives pass in a blur of ineffectual argument. Millennials have watched political movements rise and fall, with or without their assistance. It is no wonder they favour more nebulous inquiries. Housing and the climate crisis are exactly such questions, on which further study can quickly become addictive but tends to result only in outrage or despair. Sally Rooney's generational status is, at this point, a matter not of critical garland but name-recognition, much as it was for Norman Mailer. If we didn't know she thought like her cohort – looping introspections upon introspections – it is confirmed by her small but certain list of public stances. But with the millennial mood now hardening, amid thunderous talk of 'genocide', it feels that even the cerebral Rooney is now hardening with it, staking her literary fortune behind a pro-Palestinian cause now in criminal opposition to the British government.
