Austin Slater trade: Yankees acquire White Sox outfielder. How does he fit in?
As first reported by Jack Curry of YES Network, the Yankees have traded for Slater, 32, on Wednesday, on the eve of MLB's trade deadline.
Arriving from Chicago, Slater was placed on the Yankees' active roster about an hour before Wednesday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, with lefty-hitting catcher-first baseman J.C. Escarra optioned to Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
In exchange for Slater, the Yankees sent minor league pitcher Gage Ziehl to Chicago. Ziehl, 22, has a 4.15 ERA in 16 combined games (15 starts) in 2025 with Class A affiliates Tampa and Hudson Valley.
A fourth-round draft pick out of the University of Miami in 2024, the right-handed Ziehl was ranked as the Yankees' No. 18 prospect by MLB Pipeline.
Before Thursday's 6 p.m. deadline the Yankees will be actively seeking to add a starting pitcher and multiple relievers.
So far, the Yankees' three trades during this period have all been for offensive players – third baseman Ryan McMahon, utility player Amed Rosario and now Slater.
How Austin Slater fits with Yankees
Slater could be used in a left field platoon with switch-hitting Jasson Dominguez, who has struggled hitting against left-handed pitching.
In 77 plate appearances this year against lefty pitching, Slater has posted an .859 OPS. All five of his home runs this season have been hit against left-handed pitching.
"Really excited about the move,'' said Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who has "more roster flexibility'' with the acquisitions of Slater and Rosario, who "both hit left-handed pitching really well.
"And he's swinging the bat really well right now,'' Boone said of Slater's .853 OPS over his last eight games, since July 13.
Boone did not dismiss the idea of a platoon situation in left field. "We haven't had that luxury here a lot of years,'' said Boone, who could also play Rosario at third base over the lefty-hitting McMahon against left-handed starters.
Slater is mainly a corner outfielder but has appeared in center field (two games) and at first base (one game) with the White Sox this season.
Currently, the Yankees are playing without slugging MVP captain and right fielder Aaron Judge (right flexor strain), who might be ready to come off the 10-day injury list next week - but only in a designated hitter capacity at first.
Overall, Slater is batting .236 with a .721 OPS in 51 games this year. He missed time earlier this year due to a meniscus tear to his right knee.
Since the opening of the 2024 season, Slater has played with four clubs, the Giants, Reds, Orioles and White Sox.
To add Slater on the 40-man roster, the Yankees transferred Clarke Schmidt (elbow surgery) to the 60-day IL.

Yankees Reportedly Close to Deal With Former Cy Young Award Runner-Up
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees were busy at the MLB trade deadline, and while general manager Brian Cashman did just about everything else, he failed to acquire a starting pitcher. New York entered the season down an ace after Gerrit Cole underwent Tommy John surgery in the spring. Things went from bad to worse recently when Clarke Schmidt went down for the year with the same injury and outcome. It seemed like the Yankees finally got some good news with Luis Gil making his first start of the season Sunday, only to see him give up five runs on five hits and four walks, as Miami swept away the Bronx Bombers. Enter ... Kenta Maeda? DETROIT, MICHIGAN - APRIL 27: Kenta Maeda #18 of the Detroit Tigers throws a pitch in the ninth inning during a game against the Baltimore Orioles at Comerica Park on April 27, 2025 in Detroit,... DETROIT, MICHIGAN - APRIL 27: Kenta Maeda #18 of the Detroit Tigers throws a pitch in the ninth inning during a game against the Baltimore Orioles at Comerica Park on April 27, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan. (Photo by) More The New York Post's Jon Heyman reported Monday the Yankees were talking with the veteran right-hander about signing with New York. In fact, the two sides might already have had an agreement in place as of Monday afternoon; Japanese reporter Yuki Yamada reported Maeda opted out of a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs to sign a minor league contract with the Yankees. Presumably, if Maeda decided to opt out of a deal with Chicago, which has a better record than the Yankees, he likely believed he'd be in the big leagues with New York eventually. Maeda, the runner-up to Shane Bieber for the 2020 American League Cy Young Award, has not been very good over the last two seasons. He had an awful 2024 season with Detroit, where he went 3-7 with a 6.08 ERA in 29 games (17 starts) for the Tigers. He was even worse to start this season, appearing in seven games, all relief (and mostly mop-up), allowing eight runs on nine hits with six walks in eight innings of work. The Tigers released him in early May, cutting bait after giving him a two-year $24 million that turned out to be truly abysmal. A week after Detroit sent him packing, Maeda signed the minor league deal with the Cubs. He didn't fare much better there. Maeda went back to the rotation and pitched much worse than his mediocre 3-4 record would suggest. He posted a 5.97 ERA, allowing 1.4 walks and hits per inning. Desperate times call for desperate measures, apparently, and few teams are more desperate than the slumping Yankees, who entered Monday 7-11 in their last 18 games. BetMGM Bonus Code WIREBG150: Score $150 in Bonus Bets for NFL Lines, MLB Odds & More
The games may not count in the standings, but this week's NFL preseason game definitely matter. How does new Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy look? Are this year's first-round draft picks as good as their billing? Which online sportsbooks have the most intriguing welcome offers? We can answer the last one: The BetMGM bonus code WIREBG150 gives you $150 in bonus bets when you win your $10 first bet. If you're a new customer in Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania or West Virginia, then you collect three $50 bonus bets (along with your first-bet profit) when your $10 first bet wins. If you're a new bettor playing in any other state where BetMGM operates, then you get to capitalize on the BetMGM bonus code SBWIRE that guarantees you a protected first bet up to $1,500. There are no bigger (and more protected) sportsbook promos than this. If you think NFL exhibitions aren't important and have an effect on the regular season, just take a look at the Vikings. Last year, McCarthy tore the meniscus in his knee in his exhibition debut. Not only did that knock him out for the year, it also elevated Sam Darnold to the top spot and the veteran led the Vikings to a 14-3 record. Now Darnold is a Seattle Seahawk because the Vikings expect McCarthy to live up to last year's first-round pick. But for Vikings fans' sakes — and for fans of every other team who have questions they want answered ASAP — this week's games have relevance. They're also worth wagering on. Check the BetMGM Sportsbook app — one of the nation's elite sports betting apps — to get the latest odds on every game. Meanwhile, it takes just two minutes to create your BetMGM account. Tap any BET NOW button on your screen, answer a few simple questions and then type in either the BetMGM bonus code WIREBG150 or the BetMGM bonus code SBWIRE to activate your welcome offer. BetMGM Bonus Code Promos: Get $150 in Bonus Bets or $1500 First-Bet Offer With MLB's trade deadline in the rearview mirror, it's pretty much time to start the sprint to the postseason. Tonight's full MLB schedule includes a bunch of relevant games, but the best pitching matchup features the New York Yankees' Max Fried going against Texas' Nathan Eovaldi. While Fried has been great from Day 1 this season, Eovaldi quietly has fashioned a 1.49 ERA in 18 starts. You'll find dozens of ways to play on Yankees-Rangers and every other MLB game on the BetMGM app and website. Everywhere you look, there are massive events happening later this week. In addition to NFL exhibition games starting Thursday, the PGA Tour's $100 million FedExCup playoffs begin Thursday with the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. NASCAR is only a few weeks away from the start of the Cup Series playoffs, so tempers (and temperatures) will be high for Sunday's race at Watkins Glen. Basically, everything except hockey is happening right now. To get started with one of the best sportsbook promos out there, take two minutes to launch your account now. Remember, when you're asked whether you have a bonus code, type the BetMGM bonus code WIREBG150 if you're playing in Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania or West Virginia to claim $150 in bonus bets for winning a $10 first bet. If you're playing anywhere else, you'll cite the BetMGM bonus code SBWIRE to clinch one protected first bet up to $1,500. How to Sign Up for the BetMGM Bonus Code Offer If you're 21 or older (in most states) and in one of the more than 20 states where BetMGM operates, you can sign up for a new account with a BetMGM bonus code in a matter of minutes. Here's how: If you're signed up for the $1,500 BetMGM bonus code SBWIRE, place your first bet on any of today's matchups (or any other set of odds), and if it settles as a loss, you'll get bonus bets back. For wagers of $50 and up, the refund comes as five equal bonus bets, while smaller wagers get a single matching credit. With the BetMGM bonus code WIREBG150, you can wager on any set of odds, and if it comes back as a win, you get your winnings plus three $50 bet credits. After signing up for your BetMGM bonus code offer, place your qualifying bet within seven days. You'll have a seven-day window from when bonus bets are deposited to use them or they will expire.
